1231.0. " Question on "INIT SAVE_CONFIGURATION" behavior?" by CSC32::D_DONOVAN (SummaNulla(The High Point of Nothing)) Thu Apr 10 1997 16:38

	Would someone like to clarify the issue with the
"INITIALIZE SAVE_CONFIGURATION" command under HSOF V3.1 &
V5.1. In the Release Notes it mentions the following:

	...The saved information is updated whenever
	   the the configuration of the nonredundant
	   controller is changed...

	The question I have concerns the "nonredundant
controller".  If I have a dual-redundant pair and I've
used the "INITIALIZE SAVE_CONFIGURATION" will my configuration
information be saved as it would if I were in a single-controller
configuration?

Thanks,

Dennis

P.S.	Yes - I understand that in a dual-redundant configuration
	one controller can and will obtain configuration information
	from the "THIS" or "OTHER"... However, my HSJ40s/50s may
	not always remain "dual-paired".

1231.1Basically yesSSDEVO::RMCLEANThu Apr 10 1997 16:574
In a word yes. The configuration information is saved any time that the
non-volitile memory is changed on that controller. It is not easy to describe
when the configuration changes but the goal is to preserve the state of
the nv memory.
1231.2??GEM::SHERGOLDWe are 100% sure; well almost!!Sun Apr 20 1997 04:344
    It seems an oxymoron to be talking about preserving the state of
    "non-volitile" (sic) memory. Can you explain please?

1231.3Too busy??GEM::SHERGOLDWe are 100% sure; well almost!!Sun Jun 01 1997 10:093
    Ah well! I guess you can't.

1231.4Very busy...SSDEVO::RMCLEANMon Jun 02 1997 15:222
Yup... You save NV because should you install a different controller you
might want that info restored to the new controller...
1231.5Note that Save_Config is NOT recommended for Dual-redundant controllersSSDEVO::THOMPSONPaul Thompson, Colorado SpringsTue Jun 03 1997 13:232
I believe that you will find in the release notes that use of the
SAVE_CONFIG option is not recommended in dual redundant configurations.
1231.6Yup that is trueSSDEVO::RMCLEANTue Jun 03 1997 15:003
Yes that is true it is not recommended but it still works the same way.
The dual controllers can restore the configuration from the remaining
controller therefore they really don't need save configuration feature.
