1249.0. "c_swap need help again" by TPOVC::DOUGLASDAN () Fri May 09 1997 08:31

I need help

one of my customer have hsj42 with firmware v2.5-0 (some are v2.5-5 , v27.-1)

configure as dual-redundant and content mirror-set and stripe-set, now I have

to replace the write-back cache battery. refer to [TD 1902] "new C-Swap

procedure" and [TD 1983] "New Controller Swap Procedure for HSJ30/40 -BLITZ"

and the "Array Controller Cache Battery Replace Letter" with Battery kit.

For my customer configuration I MUST shutdown both controller for replace

battery or controller, this can't accept by customer. Can anyone help me for

this situation ?

Some of my colleague just shutdown one controller and warm swap the

controller or battery was success , it's correct procedure ? or it just lucky ??

Running V2.5-0 (without patch 1) is not a good idea for mirror-sets. It could
cause you to have data ingegrity problems. I also hope that you are not running
dual redundant pairs with different versions of software. This is not supported
and may also have problems.

I am not too sure exactly what to tell you here because C-SWAP was improved
with later versions of software and I don't know if the new procedure
was tested with V2.5. You really need to get upgraded to V3.1.

You probably need to do the battery change. V2.5 does not check the battery
state at any time other than boot so you will not know when a battery faiils
if the controller continue's to run.

No you really shouldn't need to shut down both controllers to replace the
battery. BUT you probably will have to replace the batteries in both
controllers at some point.

This is NOT the correct procedure and is not the supported method but... Rumor
has it that it has been known to be successful if you make sure that the
controller has been shutdown correctly. I don't know how much luck is involved..

1249.2This IS VMS and its not scsi. Utopia??SSDEVO::FIALAMe, I'm just a recycler.Wed May 28 1997 12:5315
HSJ's go with VMS, VMS nicely handles controllers rebooting and other
sundry nuisance outages. The only problem often is that the customer
application cannot tolerate a lengthy pause.
If you can find a window where the pause is acceptable you could
probably shut both controllers down at once. Ensure that "good"
^h^h^h^h^h^h "acceptable" batteries are on hand to be installed
[pre-charged etc...].
The c-swap process pre-2.7 is to not use c-swap ie: c-swap the program
was changed in 2.7+.

Shutting both down is fairly safe, most other methods are not.
[The devil is in the details].

Better install the latest version s/w at your convenience.
I wouldnt do it at the same time as the battery swap....
