1220.0. "Tape units go offline - reboot HSJ40" by CSC32::L_SOBCZYNSKI () Tue Mar 18 1997 15:00

             *HSJ40 & TKZ62s & Alpha running OpenVMS 6.1*

Site has both Digital and IBM AS400s on site. The IBM site uses
3480/3490 tapes initialized to 36 track mode. Evidently the IBM system
is quite a bit more forgiving in that although the tapes (3480/3490)
where not designed to be written to in 36 track mode, the IBM system
will write to them... The tapes are now taken to the following
configuration:

HSJ004>show tape full
Name Type Port Targ Lun Used by
TAPE100 tape 1 0 0 T0
          DEC TZ877 (C) DEC 9B3C
TAPE200 tape 2 0 0 T1
          DEC TZ877 (C) DEC 9B3C
TAPE300 tape 3 0 0 T2
          DEC TZ877 (C) DEC 9B3C
TAPE400 tape 4 0 0 T3
          DEC TZ877 (C) DEC 9B3C
TAPE500 tape 5 0 0 T4
          DEC TZ877 (C) DEC 9B3C
TAPE510 tape 5 1 0 T6
          DEC TKZ60CL 0611
TAPE600 tape 6 0 0 T5
          DEC TZ877 (C) DEC 9B3C
TAPE610 tape 6 1 0 T7
          DEC TKZ60CL 0610

Ok, so the AS400 tapes are taken to the Digital system and inserted
inserted into the TKZ62s, a DCL mount is done. It is immediately noted
that the tape units, receiving the tapes, TAPE510 & TAPE610, go offline.
The error seen at the HSJ level is:

Error Code x70 Current Error
Segment # x00
Information Byte 3 x00
            Byte 2 x00
            Byte 1 x00
            Byte 0 x00
Sense Key x05 Illegal Request<<<Drive refusing
				     command

The only recovery available at this time was to reboot the HSJ.
The current version of the firmware is 0620 as opposed to what is noted
above for each of the TKZ60CL drives. So there are several questions
that have arisen:

01-> should the HSJ port(s) servicing the TKZ62(s) hang resulting in the
     HSJ having to be rebooted?
02-> if the recommendation is to upgrade the firmware; has the firmware
been specifically patched to address this as a known situation?
03-> in any event, wouldn't a message to the effect that the format of
the tape is not what is expected etc.,,,?

We know the cause and the effect, what is being questioned is the
resulting situation that occurred. Additional is this an HSJ situation
or is it the TKZ60CL firmware that is responsible? If this is not posted
in the correct notes file please advise.

Thank you, in advance.

1220.1We dont document what happens if the rules are not followed, its a blackhole of trouble.SSDEVO::FIALAMe, I'm just a recycler.Wed May 28 1997 13:338
Was the system installed with cross-compatability as a feature?.
Are we(digital) obligated to make it work.

If you go looking for trouble you'd be surprised how close it is..

Someone once said "if it walks like a duck..." I'd add that
C. Chaplin did a good impression of a duck but I dont think he
was one.
