1203.0. "Write Back Cache and Batteries problems" by LATINA::ROMPI (MCS Madrid) Tue Feb 04 1997 06:16

            I'm having more problems with the batteries failing. I have
    three customer whit similar problems in a short time space. The problems
    is that the batteries fail and the Write Back Cache contacts are sulphated
    by the acid of batteries, after cleaning the contacts the problems do not
    disappear and is necessary to change the Write Back Cache and the
    batteries.

           Is anyone else having this problem?

           Any comments or observations would be appreciated....

           Thanks in advance...

1203.1I've seen batteries leakMPOS02::SCHRUPPTue Mar 11 1997 18:3611
    I have had this happen twice now. The first time the battery leaked
    and the contacts and battery were covered with the white acid stuff.
    I tried to clean it off but the new batteries failed to charge.
    I had to replaced the cache board.

    The second time was just last week, the 4 month old single HSZ40
    had its raid 5 drives go offline and we replaced the batteries.
    The next day it happened again and we discovered that one of the
    batteries have the white sulphated in it. I was able to clean this
    one and the batteries came up good.

1203.2Clean the module carefullySSDEVO::RMCLEANWed Mar 12 1997 13:112
Make sure you clean the module also or it might have some residue and cause
the replacement to look like it is leaking.
1203.3SSDEVO::THOMPSONPaul Thompson, Colorado SpringsWed Mar 12 1997 20:057
If there has been battery leakage onto the cache module, replace the cache
module. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN IT. The corrosion can either affect the
contact between the replacement battery and the module or cause later confusion
regarding whether the cleaning was incomplete or the new battery has leaked.

Again, if there is any sign of corrosion on a cache module from battery leakage,
replace the cache module.
