Subj: RE: Network performance?
Hi Bob,
I've asked Lee Ternullo to talk to you about this, to see if
we can reproduce the configuration, etc. (Chris called and
left a message earlier.)
In the meantime, if you haven't learned how to run tcpdump,
now's the time! Also, how to set up trusted network logging.
Note 461 is a crib sheet for tcpdump; the way you turn on
logging is to run tnetd_ctl -D2 followed by the name of the
tnet daemon you want to have bump up it's logging level:
If there truly is a problem it is probably in tnmapd, so
for example:
/tcb/bin/tnetd_ctl -D2 tnmapd
and then look in /var/adm/tnet/logs for tnmapd.log
(the names of the other daemons you can figure out from
the list of log files in /var/adm/tnet/logs.
If you don't mind, I'm posting this as a note in the notesfile
so we can track the problem if it turns out there's a bug to
be fixed later...

| Lee looked into this with Bob. He has determined that with TSIX
protocol on FDDI in V4 there is a performance degradation that does not
follow the same pattern of performance characteristics with Ethernet.
In addition, he's fairly sure that this did/does not happen in V3.1A
(it should be checked against V3.1A with PK #10, as that is the one
with Andy's performance "enhancements" for TNETDB hashing that he
submitted to V4 before he left, with a backport that went into PK#10).
So until it can be further nailed down where the problem lies, Lee
recommended that Bob use tnet protocol, which does not exhibit the same
massive performance degradation.
