      BLITZ TITLE: KZPSA Data Corruption
                                                DATE:23 April 1997
      AUTHOR: John Donovan 			TD #:
      DTN:   381-1344
      ENET:  KAMLIA::DONOVAN			CROSS REFERENCE #'s:
      DEPARTMENT: USEG                           (PRISM/TIME/CLD#'s)

      INTENDED AUDIENCE:                        PRIORITY LEVEL: 1
      (U.S./EUROPE/GIA)                         (1=TIME CRITICAL,
                                                 2=NON-TIME CRITICAL)
      =====================================================================

      PROBLEM:

      Disk data corruption can occur very intermittently under conditions
      of heavy I/O on a scsi device attached to a KZPSA SCSI Adapter. This
      happens when a read or a write request to a disk inadvertently gets
      routed to some other disk attached to the same KZPSA.

      RESOLUTION/WORKAROUND:

      The official change is going into the pools now. Until the official
      patch is available, there is a test patch available for the following
      releases:

	v3.2c, v3.2de-1, v3.2de-2, v3.2f, v3.2g, v4.0, v4.0a, v4.0b

      in:

	guru:/usr/guest/misc/osf/simport/*.tar

      ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

      This simport patch MUST be installed on every system containing a
      KZPSA in order to prevent corruption of user data being written to
      or read from disk.

    If any customer reports this problem, we'll port the base OSF fixes to
    MLS+ and make available. Else this will be held until the next patch
    kit release.

    The Digital UNIX blitz states that the patch *must* be installed
    on all systems with KZPSA. Is the assessment such that it is
    acceptable that data corruption occurs prior to the fix being
    applied to MLS+ ?
    Customer's who have Digital UNIX and MLS+ and see the blitz
    message may ask the same question.

491.3But it needn't be installed on systems w/out KZPSASMURF::BATSegui la tua beatitudineFri Apr 25 1997 16:445
    No. My assessment was: if you have KZPSA, say so, we'll build
    it and send it out. I have no idea what people have and do not have,
    and wasn't going to take the time to build something no one wanted.
    I'm sorry I'm so hardware naive, are you telling me that everyone has
    this?

    DOVER uses KZPSAs on V3.1a. any idea as to when the fix will be
    available?

    Cheers,

491.5then I'll let you know if it takes more than 2 shakesSMURF::BATSegui la tua beatitudineMon Apr 28 1997 22:212
    No, but I'll start on it now (or when the last interruption is popped
    off the stack).

    Your 2 shakes are up :-)

    Yes, I have a patch backport, but I haven't had any time to test it.
    I hope to do so today and will let you know ASAP.
