474.0. "Configuring with no graphics..." by ADISSW::FERRARA () Mon Apr 14 1997 18:57

What does one do to configure a host under MLS+ 4.0 that does not
    have graphics capability?

The documentation talks about using the "dxhostmanager" to do the
    configuration from a windows system...

    Thanks...

In general, the SPD says, I think, that you have to have at least one
    non-headless system around somewhere.

But in the special case of dxhostmanager, you can easily get the
network up and running with a basic setup by using the "netsetup"
program, which does not use an X GUI. Although there's no option for
customizing host characteristics with other than the default
definitions for unlabelled and labelled templates, you can add hosts,
    start the trusted network, etc.

For the other trusted X client applications to customize the system
(e.g., XIsso, XSysAdmin, etc.), if you have at least one "headed"
system you can then login into the headless systems from the headed
one, run dxtp_remote on the headless system with DISPLAY set to the
headed system, and thereby start up trusted path applications to update
    databases on the headless system.

(As a practical matter, I don't even think the headed system has to be
an MLS+ system, except I doubt if that is SPD- or eval-acceptable.)

And as a last resort, if you don't have a headed system, you can always
walk on the wild side and edit all the database files manually with
your favorite text editor. Not kosher from the "eval" point of view,
unless you do it in single-user mode, with your split role partner
    watching :-)

Perhaps in the future there will be a non-windows or rather X-windows
independent trusted path method for database maintenance. Got any
    money?
