470.0. "panic: kernel memory fault -- host entry with no IP addresss" by SMURF::BAT (Segui la tua beatitudine) Tue Apr 01 1997 22:26

Jim Fohlin called and said you can panic the system as follows:

Create an entry in /etc/hosts with no IP address.
You get a "kernel memory fault" panic.

That's all the information I have. They don't have enough space
    to get a crash-data file.

    I left out the clause
    "and then ping it"
between create an entry in /etc/hosts
    and you get a panic

I may be speaking out of turn, but it is not normally a good idea
to post a system killer in a "public" conference. You never know who
    is reading this!

P.S. When will SPS get the fix :-)

On the other hand, John, I should think only a privileged user can set
the system up for this failure -- and there are tons of things we
discuss every day that a fumble-fingered person with root privilege can
do to kill the system: The Unix Way.

On the other other hand, perhaps I was exhibiting my subconscious
    desires. :-)

Submit request #409 to the V4.0A pool (radix.c) was not backported to
    V3.1A.

"If routed is not running and there is no default route specified, then
an attempt to send to 0.0.0.0 will panic the system."

I'll put this on the list to backport to V3.1A scheduled for the next
patch kit (Which should be #11 and won't be shipping for a couple
months at least. #10 has already closed and is being built. If
for some reason you need it before June, I'll create a "test patch"
    in psycho:~ftp/pub.)
