| A really dramatic recording of Sibelius Symphony #1 can be heard on
NAXOS 8.550197. A well performed Symphony #6 is also included.
I have been using www.hnh.com/applause.htm, the NAXOS applause page,
as a guide to trying some of their recordings. If the critique sounds
favorable, from more than one source, I'll risk my $4.99 on one of
their disks. The NAXOS recordings of Sibelius symphonies 1-7 all
receive good reviews.
Sibelius has created a very modern sound that sometimes challenges the
ear. Some of his melodies are quite beautiful and he has no problem
expressing a variety of emotions.

| I really like Symphony #2, recorded by the Slovak Philharmonic,
Adrian Leaper conducting. Sibelius really builds up to the 1st climax
introduced in the 4th movement and reaches a final climax on the last
chord. Quite impressive. Symphony #7 is added to this CD, NAXOS
8.550198.
The recording quality is superb for these Sibelius symphonies. The
Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic is lively and makes for
good acoustics without that dreaded echo chamber effect.

| As long as we're talking about Sibelius, I'll say something...
I was just listening to my recording of the 5th (Davis/BSO) and I have to say
that the 5th and the 4th Sibelius symphonies has some of the most beautiful
dissonance ever written.
