    Am I the first? :-)

Tom Reilley, Civil War reenactor & living historian. I'm a Private
in the 5th New Hampshire and I'm thrilled to see someone has started
a notesfile just on the American Civil War.

My primary interests are railroads during the Civil War and the
Union army Quartermaster Corps. A close secondary interest is the
day-to-day affect the war had on people and what it was like to
    live during the war years.

I'm looking forward to learning more about the battles & tactics
and hope to contribute on both.

2.2DECXPS::WILLOWSConfusion will be my epitaph...Mon Jul 29 1991 17:118
    	Well, I guess I'll start.

I've been interested in mostly WWII history up to now, stemming
from my interest in war simulations. Lately though, I've been studying
a bit of the Civil War, and I look forward to learning from the CW
gurus that will no doubt inhabit this file quite soon.

I suppose I'd better sign in, since I started this thing. :-)

I know a little, bits and pieces, about the War and am now reading my
way through Shelby Foote's fabulous narrative. I've been into weapons,
having owned a couple of reproduction arms and still in possession of a
real Whitney .36 Navy. I've been into railroads, having once been an
avid model railroader.

I expect to learn a bundle here.

As you might guess from the title of this reply, I prefer not to see my
given name in Notes.

2.4Randy Ward - River RatMTWAIN::WARDPrayer requests accepted anytime.Tue Jul 30 1991 11:3615
I'm Randy Ward, a worksystems hardware writer at the Mill.

My main interest in the Civil War is in its relation to the Mississippi
River system, including the Ohio, Missouri, and many smaller tributaries.

I can offer a wealth of resources about the river, including biographies
of rivermen, steamboat photos and registries, and the like. I have
compiled some original steamboat material for the lower Ohio River.

I am also interested in genealogy, but cannot find any confirmed C.W.
relatives - yet - despite my family living in Kentucky and southern Indiana
  at the time.

My primary interest is in genealogy / family history and thus in some of the
details of the war related to the units in which my ancestors and their close
relatives served. In particular, at this point I am chasing down things about
the 173d PA volunteers.

I am also interested in the broad history and the ways in which the war changed
american society.

I've got an adequate knowlege of the eastern campaigns, but I'm not really

I've been fascinated by the whole Civil War era since I was in high
school. I've read many books on the subject including individual
biographies, battle accounts, histories such as Foote's and Catton's,
etc. I am currently reading the trilogy "Lee's Lieutenants" by
Douglas Southall Freeman. I really have no specific expertise but
consider myself a generalist. I am interested in any bit of
information regarding this tpoic. Thank you moderaters and
    participants.

Of specific interest to me is howto get involved in re-enactments.
One of you gents stated that you are involved in that. Any information
would be greatly appreciated. I have attended several re-enactments
and found them exhilirating. I have made one resolution regarding
the Civil War; to see as many of the battlefields as I possibly can.
So far I've been to Gettysburg, Antietam(Sharpsburg), and Bull Run
(Manassas). I know I have a lot more to go. And to mimic the Union
soldiers " On to Richmond " before I die. Thanks again

Have been interested in the Civil War for years. Transferred to
Richmond, VA in December of 1990 so I am now close to so much.

Have been to several Civil War battlefield sites and, being in Virginia
    now, will visit many more.

Also have easy access to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond
which has the largest single collection of Civil War relics in the
world - or so they say. Interesting series there now entitled "Before

Glad to see this conference. I fancy myself as a "really amateur"

most of the battlefields in the area. I think my favorite is

I've been interested in the Civil War since elementary school. I've also
pursued an interest in the American Revolution. I am a member (and fifer)
of a local minutman group and was involved in a number of Bicentennial

interest for me (my beard would go better with the period too!).

Good 'ol boy, Southerner, rebel, poor loser ;-), etc...

I currently live in the town of Kennesaw, GA which was once called Big Shanty
back when it was a railroad town. Civil War history is quite abundant in the
general area -- as I understand it, several battles and even a train race took
place here. The General locomotive (used in the train race) is housed here.

I will be the first to admit that I know very little Civil War history despite
where I live. I am a native of Atlanta and yet cannot even give a general
synopsis of some of the major civil war events that took place here (aside
from some yankee general with a thing for fire that wreaked havoc while on his
way to Savannah :-).

At any rate, I don't know how long I will be monitoring this conference but it
looks interesting and perhaps I will learn something.

Ken Ricker, Operator, Stow Facility, Ma. I thought I died and went to
heaven when I discovered this here notes file! Its something to
stimulate the mind in the wee hours of the morning.

My interest in the Civil War begin in elementary school with the
reading of the American Heritage's Pictorial of the Civil War. To the
point of being an Civil War reenactor myself.

    I portray; Cpl. Noah Little (1832 - 1899)
    		 5th Alabama Battalion, Co. "A"
    		 Archer's Brigade
    		 A.P. Hill's Light Division
    		 Army of Northern Virginia

That's right! A Rebel in ya'lls flank! I've been reenacting for about
5 years now. I started reenacting at the 125th of Gettysburg. Talk
about starting off with a bang! I chose to portray a Confederate
soldier because of the mystique associated with them.

I'm interested in anything concerning the "War of Northern Agression"
As it should be correctly called from an Southern viewpoint :^)
I toured every battlefield from Gettysburg to Appomattox. I've yet to
travel to the Western theater, but, I will in the near future. My
favorites being Gettysburg (The Holy Land) and Sharpsburg/Antienam.

I read anything I can get my hands on. I don't claim to an expert,
there's just to much to learn and study. Our group is fortunate,
we have a member in our ranks that is an direct decendant of a member
of the 5th Alabama Batt. Hence, the info supplied at the beginning of
the note. ( I even have a picture of my own gravestone!)

We are planning a trip next April to our adopted homeland, Alabama.
They have an annual reenactment in Gainsville, Ala., and our member in
Huntsville is rounding up decendants of the people we portray for an
family reunion/barbecue get together. Can't wait to shake the hand of
the decendant of whom I portray!

I apologize for being so long winded, but, once I get to talking about
the subject I for so long enjoyed, it's kinda hard to stop. Besides,
when have ya'll ever known a Southerner to be short winded!?

In reply to notes .10, .18, if ya'll is ever interested in doning the
Gray, drop me a line at the above node and I'll be more than happy in
supplying ya'll info for either Gray or Blue. It's not the color of the
uniform, but rather what we are portraying, the soldiers.

Ya'll have a good day! I go by the nickname "The Alabama Slammer"
I will not try to corrupt this here notes file with to much Southern
    viewpoints!? Right Tom and Ziff!!???

I have been interested in the Civil War since elementary school.
My dad was also very interested in the Civil War and so I was able
to tour many of the battlefields in the east. After high school,
I went on a reading frenzy and accumalated a good sized "library"
of Civil War books, most notably Battles and Leaders, Lee's
    Lieutenants, and Miller's Photographic History.

The most interesting moment for me was in 1986 when I toured
Andersonville and photographed my great-great grandfather's grave.
    He was:
    		Nathaniel Brooks Maxwell
    		1st Mass Heavy Artillery
captured 16-Jun-1864 in front of Petersburg
died 20-Aug-1864 of Marasmus	Grave #6272

I first learned of Reeinacting from a coworker in California when he
posted a flier of events at work. After the first time I talked it
over with wife and joined the next time we when to Fort Tejon. Then
I joined Digital and was move to Massachusetts where I found the 5 th

6 trip to Vet Nam caring Marines I never saw a gun fired and
when in the Boy Scouts never went camping. Now I am doing all these
and more. So I hope to learn more to help work on my"first person".

Most of what I know about the Upris...err...War Between the States
has been poured into the HISTORY file, so I'll probably be quiet
most of the time (sound of background applause).

Like most of you, the CW has held some degree of fascination since
school days. I kind of backtracked into it more actively since my
love of the Old West led me to reading biographies of people having
CW experience (which most of the prominent Old West characters had).
How these folks acted and reacted was much influenced by their roles
    in that war.

Over the years I've been able to collect maybe a couple dozen books
on the Civil War, and have learned a lot more from the CW notes in
    HISTORY.

I expect to learn still more in this file.

Hi...I'm Paul Martin working in Parker St. Maynard until next week when
I move to Powder Mill Road down the road a piece.

I've had absolutely no interest in the American Civil War despite
history being my favorite subject in school, and having a brother who
was a college history major and an ACW nut!!! My impression was that
the ACW was a boring war where fanatics murdered each other with long
rifles shot from trenches about eight feet apart, or who massed by the
hundreds for foolhardy bayonet charges designed to do nothing execept
    create national cemeteries.

All of that changed a few months ago when I tuned into the PBS series.
Now I'm hooked. My brother and I leave later this month to tour 7
CW National Battlefields/Parks in 9 days in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and

I always was a history buff with and as a kid any war was facintating
    to me.

What intrests me most about the Civil war is the naval and river
actions. Action involving Ironclads or the various Union assults
    on southern forts.

The PBS series has renewed and broadened my intrest. It has

My interest in the War Between the States goes 'way back in my

of the worst things you could call anyone around our house was a
damnyankee. It has been told as a joke, but in all seriousness
I was in my early teens before I realized that some people make
    two words of that!

I am working on a degree in U.S. history at the University of New

I have been a reenactor of the War for 12 years, and have learned
more in reenacting than I could have ever picked up from books,

rifle muskets and percussion revolvers, and have two N.M. state

I've been reading along, but haven't chimed in until today. How I got
started... Most summers I choose a summer reading project. Four summer's ago I
decided to read about the Civil War. I happened to select Shelby Foote's
trilogy, what a great accidental choice. It ended up taking me almost a whole
year, but it was worth it!

That summer we drove to Williamsburg on the way I got to visit so many great
battlefields some that I had read about, some that I had read about, some that
I was going to read about. Places like Manasas, Fredericksburg,
Chancelorsville, The Wilderness, the battlefields around Richmond.

That has gotten me hooked & I'm still reading. This summer we visited
Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper's Ferry, New Market, and Appomattax.

I guess the things I enjoy about the Civil War are the characters, the
dynamics, how it defined our nation, and because it's so near you can almost
reach out and touch it!

I guess it's only fitting that I work in the Mill which helped supply the
North!

I am a beginning genealogist with a great interest in the ACW, based on
a boyhood visit to Gettysburg and my dad's stories about my
    great-great-grandfather and great-great-grandmother. My
g-g-grandfather, born in upstate New York, began the war in the 7th NY
Heavy Artillery as a private, and ended the war a brevet Major
(2LT permanent) in the 12 Heavy Artillery, USCT (United States
Colored Troops). My g-g-grandmother was born in Kentucky, and
according to my Dad, met her husband to be at the end of the war when
his unit was quartered on her parent's plantation. I am lucky enough
to have a number of pictures of both of them, and some of their
parents, as well as family bibles, and a number of obituaries clipped
from the newspapers. I have sent to the National Archives for the

Robert Rodriguez, here. I'm a first generation American, but
the ACW grew on me as a kid when my family moved from NYC to
Atlanta. Even as children, my Southern classmates were thoroughly
schooled in proper CW attitudes and ettiquette.
I was captured by the mystique of the CW. While I didn't
understand it then, I think it had something to do with the
gallantry displayed by both sides. It was right on the edge of
a time when warriors would be able to kill their foe without ever
looking them in the eye. You could say the war brought out the
best and the worst in humanity; it's all a little fuzzier now...

    Hi, I'm Wild Bill Slater,

I am was born and raised in Memphis, TN. I am a charter member of a
chapter of the Children of the Confederacy that was started there in
    the early 1960s.

ALL of my relatives fought on the side of the South during that Yankee
War of Agression. One of my great-great-grandfathers was aide-de-camp
to Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest has always been my favorite
American miltary hero. Another great-great-grandfather, Oscar
Littleberry Slater, was a teenager attending VMI, and fought against
the Yankees in one of the cadet batallions at the Battle of New Market.

I myself served in the modern day military in Omaha, Nebraska.
After I got out of college in May '77, I served in the USAF as an
officer. I have been a civilian since Oct. '80. I started with DEC in
June '90, and am presently a software specialist working on database
migration projects in the Center for Migration Services in Colorado
    Springs, Colorado.

I am happy to find this conference on the American Civil War. I hope
to be able to read a lot and contribute some.

BTW, I grew up hating Yankees because of what they did to the South
after the War. That has never been forgiven by many: the memory still
remains. However, after spending 4.5 years in Chicagoland from NOV 86
through MAY 91, I learned to understand them. There is STILL a night
and day difference between the average Yankee and the average
    Southerner.

I am very thankful for my Southern upbringing and my Southern Heritage.

    Wild Bill

PS I had a picture taken of me in a Confederate colonel's uniform in
OCT 81. That picture makes me look like an authentic Confederate senior
officer because I am bald-headed, and have a dark, well-trimmed beard.
I have been told by some that I look like Gen. Richard Euell Stoddard.

I would probably be a re-enactor, but I shrink from the loud report of
firearms. Instead, I choose to excel in unarmed combat, and am a black
belt in Judo as well as a certified Judo Instructor.

My interest in the Civil War is due to my position as a Trustee of the

1890 as a memorial to the Civil War soldiers of Acton. As part of our
centennial year celebrations we sponsored a series of events related to
the Civil War. Last year, we followed up with an encampment of Civil
War re-enactors which was organized by Tom Reilley, [see 2.1] who was

Tom and I are in the process of organizing another encampment in Acton

One of the Irish TV stations has just shown a ser documentary series on

the UK BBC when they showed it last year. The program is of US origen
and featured a lot of photographs, diaries, personal account which made
the series very interesting. After watching it, it seemed probable
that thenorth would have lost if the south had brought the fight to to
the North before they (the north) got a chance to muster troop. Lincoin
as a political leader earlier in the war was weak and could have lost
congress if the South had pushed their earlier wins into an all out
    assault on the North.

Obviously I am interested too beacuse so many Irish fought on both
sides - typical Irish - they love fighting !!!!

The War haunts me, I have the feeling it need not have been fought, nor
should it have been fought. Had I lived during the time of the War I
would have consider the seecesh Wromantic and Wrong, yet I would have

As I drove through the southland I wondered and wondered what it would
have been like to go through CSA checkpoints at the border (rather like
going to Canada I imagine). Would the cultures have diverged markedly,
what would Central and South America be like if there was a viable
    Conferderacy. All sorts of questions.

The War brought many things to the modern world we know, love, and
loath such as total war. An the what-ifs, enough to drive any alternate

I've been interested in the "War of Yankee Agression" since I was
a child. Being a southerner by birth and a yankee by marriage has
given me an insight to both side of the war. My ancestors from
West Virginia fought for the union while the Alabamians and Georgians
fought for the south. My great great grandfather died during the war, as
did numerous cousins so I'm also interested in genealogy.

Growing up in Georgia I was able to visit many of the battlefields and
the prison at Andersonville. So I hope to add and gain knowledge from
    both sides in this conference.

I've never really been into history that much, but I recently came into
possesion of my late uncles "stuff". While looking through these boxes
of things, I came across letters written during the Civil War. They
were writtenn by officers about an Oscar F. Bucken, who would either be
my Great or Great Great Grandfather or uncle. My grandmother's name was
BUcken. I haven't yet researched this through geneology, but hope to.

The interesting things about these letters is one is telling his mother
he is missing, and believed captured by the enemy, and another one is a
letter stating that he had been cptured, and had excaped, and was thin
but doing well. These are all handwritten on regular paper.

Tom Reilley, the first one to introduce himself, has seen these letter
and papers, and has helped to pique my interest in the Civil War. I
expect to learn a lot in here also.

Just don't ask me any dates!!! I hate dates!! That's why I always hated
history in school. It wasn't enough that I new the cronological order,
and everything that happened durinf a confrontation, if I didn't know
it happened on Friday, January 22, 1993, I was stupid! ARGH!!!! I can't
remember my own family's birthdays! ;-)

So, off I go to learn more about this VERY interesting part of our
    history.

Hi, my name is Ron Warrenfeltz and I'm a CSC in Greenbelt, MD.

My interest in the ACW stems from my love of history, I have a BS in
History/Social Studies and I was going to teach many moons ago but I
came out in '76 when there was a glut of teachers.

Since living in the MD area all my life, I kinda took it for granite
in my youth when my dad would drag us to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper's
Ferry, Fredericksburg, Richmond and Petersburg on summer vacation. I
guess some of it rubbed off, since now I love history. I've never been
able to trace any of my ancestors, who came to America in the 1760's,
back as a member of either side but I can remember those family
reunions in Sharpsburg, just outside ANtietam, when the elders would
always have a lively conversation during horseshoe tourney.

Hope to learn from ya'll also. Although I'm prolly a Yankee, I have
torn sympathies for the Rebs, especially Stonewall and Forrest.

Wow, I'm trilled to have found this conference! I'll never be able to
explain it, but I've grown up with a deep feeling and connection with
those from this time period, and from other parts of the 19th century
for that matter. My interests run more towards understanding the
people, how they lived, and appreciating how they suffered. I have
a number of old books from the era and was "hooked" when I read a
preface from an author that said "I am not writing this for the
present day people to read, but am writing it for the future historian
one hundered years from now ..." The date on that book was in the
1870's and I was reading in the 1970's, I shuddered and then felt
as if that whole book was from someone from that time communicating
with me. I'm saddened by the hectic pace surrounding life in this
century and am concerned that people do not pause to look into the
depths of their hearts, but rather live on the "surface" of life
constantly striving to get more "things" and "power". Studying and
trying to understand what the people from the Civil War felt
has led me to understand that all in this life is temporary and has
caused in me a greater thirst for what is eternal. As a poem
by Mary Ford which I found in a book from 1890 states: "...and few shall
know we ever lived a hundred years from now". (which I'd *love* to
enter here, but I'm feeling guilty for having rambled on so already!!)
1890 was a hundred years ago, and, sadly, she was right.

Joe Ward joining up. I have several hundreds of books, some of which
are primary sources, as well as miscellaneous items (Swords, maps,
lithographss, etc.) on the ACW. My interest goes back twenty years or
more due to the family's (on my mother's side) active involvement. The
story goes that my g-g-grandfather was sent to a hospital in Wisconsin
to recover from wounds rec'd at Gettysburg and there he met my
g-g-grandmother - a local farm girl. My brother, a retired Marine, put
on the gray and, with his wife, spends most weekends on either

Ken Burns sparked my interest in the civil war a few years back. I was
clicking through my channels, and had the buzzer on my oven go off. I
paused at "The Civil War", when I came back in (with my dinner) I
decided to watch it while eating... I sat through the rest of the week
    glued to that show.

I can't wait to see Gettysburg!

My name is Chip Bach, I'm an area security manager for the Eastern
States Area. I reside (somehow) in Cincinnati Ohio.

    I started in Merrimack/Nashua.

I love reading on the civil war both fiction and non-fiction. "Gone
with the Wind" has become one of my favorite books.

During my honeymoon this past summer, I bought some civil war artifacts
from a beach-comer at a Charleston Market. It is several mini-balls,
bullets, pistol caps, and union uniform buttons from Folly Island.

Every time I look at that stuff, I wonder what was going on when it was
    initially used.

I am a Canadian yet I am fascinated by the American Civil War.
I am sure that war was the birth of the American Psyche.
American traits of Brashness, Boldness, Patriotism, Telling it like
it is and Sentimentality were all conceived by this war.
Sometimes I feel eerily drawn towards that war. I have relatives
living down there and maybe some of my ancestors were involved.
For some reason I get very emotional when I recollect it.

Another late-comer...

I'm Tom Randolph, a general & military history buff, but recently been
growing more and more fascinated by the American Civil War. I think this
started, as so many here, with the PBS series. Since then I've been to
Gettysburg (twice), Vicksburg, and Fredricksburg, and I've gotten halfway
through Foote's narrative trilogy. We're planning to attend the Gettysburg
re-enactment July 2-4 next year. I've shot photos of the graves of Civil War
veterans on my wife's side, and I hope to start researching both sides back
to Civil War days soon.

I'm interested in just about any aspect of the War... the emerging military
and other technologies, the tactics, the politics, everyday life both
civilian and military. I think it's the clash of some things so modern as to
seem close and familiar, with others so archaic as to seem absurd, that draws
me to this. They say history repeats itself, and lately I wonder if we will
remember lessons learned then...

My turn, I suppose

I'm Gary Greer, currently a drilling reservist at NARCEN (Naval Air
Reserve Center) Denver, Colorado. I spent a little over 12 years on active
duty in the U.S. Navy, and enjoyed most of it. I got out as an AT1 (Aviation
Electronics Technician, E6) and probably will retire in a year or so as an
AT1. (Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about the Chief's initiation!)

I'm a contractor debug electronics tech here at CX02, for a couple more
days, in Colorado Springs, putting some of my navy training and experience to
good use here working on disk drives for Storage, soon to be Quantum. I
recently accepted a civil service position with Naval Air Systems Command.

I've had a life long interest in history in general, and war in
particular, especially WWII. However, the Civil War is also interesting, with
Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson as Christian Generals for the confederacy,
General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs for the Union,
and of course, the Monitor & the Merrimack as the first ironclad naval battle
in history.

Many of the enclosed notes have been interesting, and I've added
my $0.02 worth on occasion.
