| I don't know about the 5th, but I believe that there was at least one
soldier from my town in the 55th (Townsend). I believe the last name
was Hazard. There is a plaque on the front of Memorial Hall (our
town hall - center of town, across from the Methodist Church - large
cannon out front) that lists all the CW soldiers from town by unit.
I believe he might be mentioned in the two histories on the town, The
first is written by Isthmar(sp?) Sawtelle in 1877 (Available in the
town library) and the second is Divinity To Dust, written in the last
15 years (also in our town library). You might check out our town
library's reference room. It has a number of volumes on the Civil War
- Not has good as Lancaster's collection, but some amount of items
specific to Townsend and Massachusetts.

| RE .0:
The Winchester library has a reserved collection of books related
to the war, including several regimental historys and a copy of the
two-volume compilation of original muster rolls of all the Mass.
volunteer regiments. (It was interesting to note that despite "Glory",
the sergeant-major of the 54th Mass. was 28 years old...)
You need to make an appointment to use them, but it might be worth
checking. They are stored in the Lincoln and Lee room.

Thank you for the replies .1,.2 I own the 8-Volume set of Mass Soldiers/
Sailors/Marines and the 2-volume compendium set you also mentioned.
Both of these provide an adequate roster - I was looking for a little
more 'story' information; Engagements, incidents, comments, etc..
Thanx again,
-John
