;reprinted with permission of the author. :-) I have started posting these
; in the (Usenet) Soc.History newsgroup.

The following is a calendar listing for various (American) Civil War events
for the month of August.

This list is provided as a convenience to those interested in such events.
There are no guarantees, implied or otherwise, regarding any of these events.

I will attempt to update & post this list every month.

DISCLAIMERS:	1). This list is not all inclusive. Many events are not
always advertised or promoted in the hobby press.
Additional submisions to me for inclusion in the
			listings are always welcome.
2). There are no guarantees that each event will be held as
advertised. You should contact the event organizers
or sponsors listed under the Contact column to
verify event information, admission charges, ETC.
Occasionally events are cancelled at the last
minute for reasons beyond the control of the
organizers or sponsors, for which neither they
			nor I assume any responsibility.
3). This list is provided as a convenience to fellow
history buffs. I have no personal financial interest
whatsover in any of the events.
4). Admission fees. Most of the info I list is gathered
from sources aimed at reenactors. Admission fees
for spectators are not always listed. If they
don't list them then I can't list them. Many events
are free but some events do charge spectator admission
(or ask for donations) but they may not be included
			in these listings.

    Hi All,

The next episode of "The American Experience" on the PBS network
(which airs tonight at 9:00 pm (14-Oct-91) in VT.) will feature
a portrait of a Massachusetts Company of ACW Vol. made up of Blacks.
It should be very interesting and educational.

Just to mention... The 54th was not the only black regt. from Mass.,
the 55th was also a black regiment, though seldom mentioned. I cant
remember much more about them. I have more data and probably their Regt
history at home. I 'do' have Emelio's 2d edition of "A brave black
regiment, the 54th Mass." Dry reading, given the time it was written,
    (about 1911), but still informative.

I think the first black regiment was the 1st South Carolina,
made up of escaped and "liberated" slaves.

"Glory" has a few pretty minor flaws in it, but all in all is
superb. It will be the standard for a long time, espeically
for HOllywood! There is another film on the 54th, called "The
True Story of Glory Continues." It is more of a documentary,
narrated by Denziel Washington. I have not seen it, but a few
reenactors I know have said it is pretty good.

The theatre that was showing "Glory" when it first came out called
the NM Commemorative Civil War Congress and said that if we would
send some folks out to do a living history exhibit at the theatre,
they would let all the participants in to see the film for free.
As a result, I saw "Glory" in my Confederate infantry uniform, with
my Enfield across my lap and 40 rounds of ball on my hip. Such a
setting did not detract from my involvement in the story line at all.

16.13Framingham,MA event this summer??REMACP::RICHARDSONTue Apr 07 1992 17:496

A friend of mine asked if I knew about an event this summer at
Callahan State Park, Framingham, Mass. Possibly reenacting Bull Run.
Does anyone have any info on this?

It was cancelled due to a schedule conflict. Apparently the UCV, who
was sponsoring the event, didn't realize that the event at Uxbridge is
an annual thing. Before they realized the mistake they had already
gotten the permits for the same weekend. Rather than having 2 events
in competition with each other within a few miles of each other, the
UCV tried to arrange for a different weekend, but things didn't work
out. The UCV graciously gave in to Uxbridge. From what I've heard,
they are planning the Callahan State Park event again for next year,
on a weekend which will be convenient for all. Too bad it won't go
down this year: I live in Framingham and went to check it out. The
place they were planning on is terrific!

I should have mentioned this yesterday, but in Baltimore on April 19th,
1861 fell the first casualties, from hostile fire, of the Civil War.

And at 5:30 that evening the Davis Guards of Acton, Massachusetts
arrived in Washington to defend the Capitol, the first company of fully
armed and equipped militia in the entire Union to answer Lincoln's call
    for volunteers.

To commemorate the Davis Guards, Co. "E", of the 6th Mass. Volunteer
Militia, there will be an encampment this weekend in Acton including
members of the 5th New Hampshire, 27th Connecticut and 3rd Vermont.

I believe the camp opens around 9:30-10:00 and remains
open until at least 5 both days.

The 28th Mass Volunteers, Company "H" - Irish Brigade
    will be the unit encamping.

There's going to be a rededication of the Monument on Boston Common
to the Irish who served in the ACW. Date is November 7th. Not sure
of the times at present, although I understand it'll something like
a day long affair. From what I can gather, there won't be any new
momument at this time, as the city of Boston wants to do some major
renovations to the Common before they put up any more momuments.
Several Re-Enactment Union Re-Enactment units are scheduled to
appear at it for the day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In October of 1861 the newly formed 5th New Hampshire Volunteers marched off
to war with 1,019 men under Colonel Edward E. Cross who had organized the
Regiment. Following the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-2-3, 1863, the Regiment
was reduced to 87 men and sent home to New Hampshire to recruit new men to
fill the decimated ranks.

Once again the "Fighting Fifth" will return to Concord and in conjunction
with the 130th anniversary activities of the Civil War, we will pay honor
to the brave men who served in all 18 New Hampshire Volunteer Regiments.

On Sunday, September 26th, from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., the 5th New Hampshire
will set up a recruiting tent and company street on the lawn of the Statehouse
in Concord.

There are three Company drill demonstrations, two with musket firing,
planned for the afternoon. In between drill sessions you will be able
to see - and in some cases receive a hands-on instruction lesson - in
the uniforms & equipment of a typical Civil War soldier.

5NHV historians will be available in the Hall of Flags inside the Statehouse
to answer questions from the public.

The event is free and open to the public, and we encourage you to come down
and learn more about New Hampshire's proud Civil War heritage.

For more information you may call Chuck Paradzick at (603)434-0770 or
reply to me via e-mail.

I was hoping to have a lot of detailed info by now but alas our
company clerk is missing in action and we have yet to
receive any communications about this event.

There will be a Civil War encampment and battle reenactment in
Madison, Connecticut this coming weekend, April 23-24. The event
will be held at the Hammonassett State Park in Madison, off I-95
at Exit 62. (Hammonassett is roughly 15-20 miles east of New Haven).

Saturday evening at dusk there will be an assault on Battery Wagner
featuring the 54th Mass. Numerous other Federal regiments from
the New England area will participate. I do not have any info or
details as to which Confederate units will be there, but the event
is co-hosted by the 5th Alabama Field Music so hopefully the Slammer',
    Ken Ricker, will be there.

The event is also co-sponsored by the Madison, Ct. Chamber of Commerce
so for spectator/ticket info try calling them at (203)245-7394. If
that doesn't work out try calling the two event contacts for
reenactors, C. Quist at (203)525-4993 or Sam Graham at (203)767-3066.
