2050.0. "Storage Shelf support in Decsafe config." by HGOVC::XFMV01::SUDHIRB () Wed May 07 1997 13:27

hi,

We have proposed a Decsafe configuration to meet our customer's
need for high availability. This involves mirroring the data across
controllers also.

The configuration is as follows.

The servers proposed are two AS1000s. The storage proposed is two BA356
shelves. The customers requires 3 1GB disks to be mirrored. (total =6GB).

After negotiations the customer feels that the storage boxes are pushing
up the price and making us less competitive. (the competition here is hp,
sun etc...).

Is it possible to use the BA356 in split bus mode and thereby save on
one storage box?

Another option, is it possible to use two BA364's in Decsafe configuration?
These are smaller storage boxes. (4 disks per). Anything else that can
serve the purpose? Price is a major issue here....

Redundancies on the storage box are not so much an issue.

Thanks in advance for a solution to this problem.

BA356 = 7 slots.  For dual bus, you'll need 2x DWZZBs which
leaves you with 5 slots to insert your 6 disks into - Doesn't
seem to fit. I suppose you could use DWZZB-AA (rather than
the -VW version), but that also adds cost. This configuration
also has many more single points of failure, so it may not
give you the data accessability you really want.

As for the BA364, 1 slot for DWZZB-VW and 3 are left for disks.
I don't know if the DWZZB-VW was qualified with the BA364, you'd
need to find that out (or you're back to the DWZZB-AA).

Note too, that these options leave ZERO expansion room. Is the
price of 1 BA356 really making us non-competitive? They aren't
that expensive (are they?).
