1881.0. "Same Hostname for 2 Member?" by MSAM03::FOOSZEMUN () Thu Feb 13 1997 09:52

    Hi,

I've a customer trying to install Excel SQL for their Unify
database. This application will be installed into a HSZ40 connected to
2 Alpha Server 2000 running Digital Unix 4.0a. The problem that they are
facing now is the license for their application is generated based on the
hostname. They only have 1 license for the ASE system because
the application will only run on 1 system only. Now they want to have
both the system having a same hostname.

Configuring a common name for both of the system using the ASE's user
define service doesn't help. I thinking of changing the hostname to
overcome the license problem.(without changing /etc/rc.config) But will
this create a problem for ASE since ASE has been configure with the members
hostname? The only problem is now I can think of is dxlsm & dxadvfs needs
to be configure in order to get the display. Is there any other
appropriate ways to overcome this problem?

    Thanks,
    SMF

Using hostname for licensing does not work....

Some options:

In Digital, we license many products for use on a single system.
But the customer has rights to move the license to another system
so long as the product is never used on 2 systems at the same time.
The reason we do this is so upgrades, or replacement systems can
be used if something is being fixed or upgraded.

In an ASE environement, there are multiple systems, each with their
own hostnames. Services are created that can have TCP addresses
just for the service.

The customer should try to get Unify to understand that they are
only running unify on 1 system at a time, but they need more than
once license (or some other workaround from unify) to allow it
to operate in the the cluster.

Unify should not use hostname for licensing....it something on a
system that can change pretty readily for many reasons.

Many vendors do similar things that I described Digital does, in
that they allow the license to be installed on the multiple systems,
with the customer ensuring only 1 is active at any time.

Unify has a problem that their technology for check licenses is
more restricted than practical business practices would like.

Don't bother trying to change the hostname on ASE on the fly...it won't
like it.

Discuss the issue with Unify to find some other workaround.
