1850.0. "Questions about TruCluster licensing" by VAXRIO::63011::VAXRIO::ALCIDES (Technical Sales Support) Thu Jan 30 1997 11:43

I'm a bit confused about licenses for Trucluster on Digital UNIX.
From the SPDs, I find three licenses:

QL-3RLA* - Trucluster Production Server license
QL-05SA* - Trucluster Available Server license
QL-4ZCA* - Memory Channel software license

Production Server software installation manual says that two PAKs are needed:
TCR-UA (TruCluster Production Server software) and MCA-UA (TruCluster MEMORY
CHANNEL software).

I have some questions:

1) For a complete Production Server environment, does a customer need to buy
the three licenses, or just 3RL and 4ZC? I understand that DECsafe is
mandatory for the production server.

2) If a customer already has a DECsafe environment, and want to implement a
Production Server environment, does he need to buy 3RL and 4ZC or buy 4ZC and
the upgrade license for 3RL?

Hello -

For a complete Production Server environment, a customer needs to
purchase only one software license - The TCR production Server
Software license which is QL-3RLA*-AA. The TCR MEMORY CHANNEL
Software capability AND the DECsafe failover ability ARE
included in this part number. If you think of the Production
Server product as a superset of all three products, then it
is easy to understand.

The reason why we broke it out the TCR MEMORY CHANNEL Software as
a separate product was that there was a need for technical
computing customers to use the MEMORY CHANNEL interconnect.
The TCR MEMORY CHANNEL Software consists of a device driver
and a routine library that allows programmers to write distributed
applications requiring direct access to MEMORY CHANNEL for high
performance.

In terms of your second question, in November 1996 we created
migration part numbers for customers in DECsafe environments
who wanted to upgrade to the Production Server environment.
The part number here is QL-5J2A*-AA. There was a sales update
written on this during that time frame. Keep in mind that the
migrations only work from tier to corresponding tier...ex.
ASE TLaser to TCR TLaser, etc.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you do migrate from
DECsafe to Production Server, the customer needs to purchase
the necessary MEMORY CHANNEL hardware.

I hope this helps.

Christine,

Yes, it helps a lot.
I could not find the upgrade part number.

Thanks,

1850.4Ql-3rlag-aa to run ASE/no_mem_channel ?VYGER::JASPERTThu Feb 06 1997 16:3514
    Extending this theme,

In Europe, the ASE lic & the ASE to Prod/server upgrade add up to lots
more than the straight QL-3RL lic. My customer wants to buy the 3RL
and use ASE until his appl is ready for the full memory-channel
    version.

So, can he buy a 3RL licence, run ASE with it and not have M/Channel ?
He knows the licence costs more but he believes it will be cheaper in
the long run. He will have more cash later, when he will buy the M/Ch
    items.

1850.5More on upgrade to Production Server license...NETRIX::"cls@kitche.zk3.dec.com"Christine SarkisianFri Feb 07 1997 17:1319

Please note that the migration/upgrade license (QL-5J2A*-AA)
is only really for those customers that already have a Available
Server configurations.

If the customer has Available Server SW and wants to move
to the Production Server then they should purchase the 5J2 license.
If they don't have it and want to move directly to the Production
Server then they should purchase the 3RL license....

I am not sure if this answers your question.

Christine

The Version 1.4(a) installation guide for Production Server Software and MEMORY CHANNEL software says:

Use the License Management Facility (LMF) to register the Product Authorization Key (PAK) for *one* (emphasis is
mine) of the following products:

Product PAK
------------------------------------- -----
TruCluster Production Server Software TCR-UA
TruCluster MEMORY CHANNEL Software MCA-UA

This manual, although the title says only Production Server Software, documents software installation for two
products: Production Server Software and MEMORY CHANNEL Software. Although I think the wording is clear in that
it does say "one of the following," perhaps it is easy to overlook. The reader's eye is probably drawn right to
the table, which does make it look like two licenses are needed.

The Available Server Hardware Configuration and Software Installation guide, since it addresses only the one
product, clearly states that only the Available Server Software license (ASE-OA) is required.

For Version 1.5, we will be merging the software installation information for all three products into a single
manual. I'll make sure that we do a better job of clarifying exactly what license must be registered, based on
which product the customer has purchased.
