352.0. "1969 Topps Baseball" by DRAGN::BOURQUARD (This is not here) Thu Nov 14 1991 14:14

At the GBSCC show last week I was able to find the last card I needed to
complete the 1969 set that I started when I was 10 years old. I've gone
through the set a few times now, and my wife looks at me oddly whenever
I grab the book, and I've found a few interesting things about the set.

All of the teams are listed by name, not city, except for Houston.
There are the Red Sox, Dodgers, Yankees, Reds, Pilots, and HOUSTON!
	Why not the Astros?

I've got three of the white letter cards. How many of them are there
all together? Of course I don't have the WL Mantle.

Some of the cards are listed in Becketts as DP, or Double Print.
	What does this mean?

In my search, one of the numbers I was looking for was a Lou Johnson
card. When I finally found it I turned it over and looked at the
picture and could have sworn that I already had that card. Trusting
my "want list" I paid the 40 cents for the card and got home to find
that I indeed did not have this card. Then I was looking back at
my partial 1968 set and sure enough, there was that same picture
of Lou Johnson. Different team, but same picture! I haven't noticed
any others like this but I'm sure there are some.

Does anyone else have any other tid-bits from 1969?

There was some kind of confusion around the Houston team that year.
Topps was unsure of the team nickname, so they used Houston. However,
it's also been reported that Topps licensing agreement at the time
didn't include the Astros (maybe the Colt .45's?), or somesuch, so
they used the city name. BCM did an article on the '69 set 2 or 3
    years ago.

Double-printing has something to do with the size of the sheet they
are printing the cards on, and the corresponding size of the set/
    series.

Suppose a sheet is 12 cards by 11 -- 132 cards. Suppose the set
was only going to be 100 cards. Each sheet could have one set,
plus some. The other 32 cards would be players who were double
    printed, or triple-printed.

Also, as the year wore on, dealers were less likely to order as
many cards, as baseball season was coming to a close. So 500,000
    series I cards might've been printed, 400,000 series 2, 350,000
series 3, .... down to the 6th or 6th series only having 100,000
cards or so. So the early series, where there were many more
    printed, would/could be considered "double-prints".

Lots of cards from the 65-70 time frame have identical pictures
including some of the big boys. Off the top of my head I believe these
    are the same.

    68 & 69 Mantle

    67 & 68 Yaz (or is it 68 & 69)

    68 & 69 Namath (and maybe 70 also)

I think the Carew for 68, 69 and 69 Deckle Edge cards have the same
    photo.

As for DPs, I don't think if was due to the higher print run in the
early series so much as the repeated rows that you mentioned, Roy.

I have been trying to complete a Tiger team set from 1969. I still
need to find a McLain and an Oyler in good condition, but I found a shop
that has most of them. My question concerns the World Series cards. I
was told that a set, including the 7 World Series cards, goes for $135.00
(locally, of course), and that was because the WS cards are worth $50.00
alone!! Do you remember shelling out a lot for these cards, or did you
already have them from your childhood?

All of my WS cards were originals. The majority of the cards that I was
missing were from the 4th series. My guess is that my family went on
vacation when that series came out and I never caught up.

I'll see if I've got any doubles of those. I'll also look for the other two.
Mail me their numbers if you know them. That'll make it easier.

I found out that the Oyler card is not a Tigers card, but a Seattle
Pilots card! So, forget that one. I found one shop that has the
World Series set (Topps numbers 162 - 168), and he wants $25 for
them. How does that sound?? However, I still cannot find a McLain
(NO. 150), so I would appreciate any help I can get with that one.

I Like the 1969 Topps set alot (second only to the 1967 Topps).
I have almost completed the set but need a few more cards including
a Reggie rookie. I started my set back when wax was 5 cents a pack.
I have recently gone through and upgraded the poor condition cards
(mostly red sox) and have been filled in alot of the 'holes'.

If anyone would like to do some 1969 trading I am INTERESTED ! I have
hundreds of doubles. I will post a list of what I need in the TRADING
    (note 5.*)

There are a LOT of white letter cards (I have quite a few myself).
One of the yearly beckets paperback books lisdt them all..

I found an 1969 RED SOX year book , it has some real neat tid-bits in
    it.
