516.0. "1992-1993 Upper Deck Hockey" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Tue Dec 22 1992 22:38

    Couldn't find a 1992-1993 Upper Deck Hockey Topic so here's one.
    The High # series will include a 10 Card Gordie Howe Heroes of Hockey
    subset. Don't know if there are any other insert sets, but I'm sure
    there will be.

I picked up a couple boxed of 92-93 UD Hockey at BJ's over the weekend,
and have since opened them all up.

A comment I have to make - this supposedly "random" mixing of cards by
Upper Deck is totally ridiculous! For example, I got five Gretsky hockey
heroes cards in the 3 boxes opened. Do you know how many *different* ones I
got? One! I'm the now the proud owner of five copies of #10 in the series
of 18, and no others. ARGH!!!

Not only that, but I could accurately predict what cards were in the next
pack before I even opened them, because they were all in some kind of order.
(It might seem random if you only open one pack, but not if you open a box.
I guess their idea of "random" is quite different from mine....)

    Upper Deck's collating is atrocious. You'd figure you'd get pretty
    close to a set in products such as basketball and minor league, but
    you're still 50-60 cards short and it's not like you get seven or
    eight Frankie Rodriguez's or Brien Taylor's or Larry Johnson's. No,
    you get seven or eight Michael Smith's. I figure all the big names
    go out the back door to the dealers who sell those 100 card lots of
    these guys.

    Donruss is just as bad. Steve Hayes and I opened 6 boxes and we
    barely got two 396 card sets out of them. With Donruss though you
    seem to get more duplicates of stars.

    With Fleer you always seem to get a set out of a box.

516.3How many packs must we open ?!DPE::LEMAIREWed Dec 23 1992 19:4918
    Can anyone list all the variations of subsets in this year's
    UD Hockey series? SO far, we have been able to figure out the
    following:
    	HOH - Gretzsky
    	ERT - Euro-Rookie Team
    	ART - All ROokie Team
    	SP2 - Pavel Bure - All Rookie Team top vote getter.

    What are these other cards that we saw mentioned in 'wanted'
    lists? Such as:
    	W1, W2, etc....
    	ER1, ER2, etc.

    The UD Low # Hockey has the following inserts:

    SP2 (Pavel Bure - SP1 was "Glastnost on Ice" in 1991-92)
    AR1-AR7 (All Rookie UV coated - available in foil packs)
    ERT1-ERT6 (Euro-Rookie Team Holograms, available in foil/jumbo)
    Heroes of Hockey 10-18 and "cover" (Gretzky)
    E1-E20 (Euro-Stars, available in jumbos only)
    W1-W6 (All World UV Coated - available in canadien distribution foil
    	   packs -- replaced the "AR" cards. These cards are the only
    	   differences between english and canadien print runs, cards
    	   1-440 are exactly the same).

Thanks John! It was the non-low-series cards that had us confused..... I
guess we'll have to hit some shows to pick them up someday.....

    I opened 2 and 1/2 boxes of these and still did not geta set. I was 14
    cards short. No mario, no wayne, no brett. I wonder if they do go out
    the back door. Also only 3 gretzky heroes. I have plenty of dupes for
    any trades.

    Wow, that's pretty bad. 2.5 boxes and none of those stars.

516.8russian bonanza though!MSDOA::PARKERJThu Dec 31 1992 17:205
    Yeah, but I did get Eric and plenty of pavel, sergie and all my
    favorite russians. Oh yeah, in one box each pack had a double of one
    card. The 2nd and fifth cards were the same. Weird.

    	I went to a card dealer in upstate New Hamp. over the
    	weekend. They had on sale special U.D. All Star Hockey
    	packs that could only be bought at McDonalds in Canada.
    	4 cards to a pack for $2.00. Does anyone have a price list
    	for these??? I didn't see them in Becketts, could be in
    	T. Stuff.

    	Thanks

    This is the second year they've had these cards.

    Last year it lasted for 2 weeks only (unlike the baseball which almost
    8 weeks).

    You can buy five packs per visit (regardless of the number in your
    party) at 39 cents per pack.

    Typical Upper Deck, the collation is pitieful. Out of aprox. 40 packs,
    I've only got 7 holo's so far and in many packs you'll get two of a
    single card.

    The cards are already in the card show circuit;

    Average prices- singles @ 25 cents each
                    checklist @ $2.00 to $4.00
                    sets of above  @ $12.00 to $15.00
                    holo's  @ $2.00 to $4.00 each (P.Roy @ $4.00)
                    sets of the six holo's @ $20.00

    In my humble opinion, they are not as nice as last year's and the
    holo's are definitely harder to get. (Last year you always got one holo
    in each pack.

516.11series 2 - good price?YEOLD::PROVENCALMon Mar 01 1993 15:295
    Upper Deck Series 2

    Does anyone know what a good price is for a box of series 2 packs?

    Sigh... Ok, I caved in last night at a show and got a box of Series
    2. One table had a box for $50. Another at $36. Figure out where
    I went to get them?

    About 6-7 series II cards/pack, rest are series I. Howe cards (Heros
    and Select) are nice. Jr. Championship, "What you want to know about
    the stars but were afraid to ask" (not the real name, but that's the
    idea), Young Guns inserts. Not a lot of different stars in the regular
    part.

    Didn't pull a Select Juneau or Yzerman, so I must be slipping. I did
    get a Roenick, Lafontaine, Chelios and Lemieux Select card though. Two
    or Three Howe Heroes, plus a header card...

516.13I Got Walt's BoxQETOO::HAYESTue Mar 09 1993 19:088
    Opened a box last night (must have got Walt's Box by mistake).
    13 insert cards. 5 Howes, 1 SP3, 1 Hologram (Roussel) and 6
    Howe Selects. Lindros, Selanne and Juneau Selects were 3 of
    the Selects.

    Great Box for a change.

516.14 Not as much luckWMOIS::ZELENT_JWed Apr 28 1993 16:286

    	Wish I had that kind of luck. Opened 2 boxes and only got 1 Howe
    select. Though I did get 7 and 8 heroes per box and a total of 4 holos.
