474.0. "The end or an era :-(" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Tue Aug 25 1992 12:00

Well unfortunately our fearless moderator and owner of this notes file - rjk
was laid off yesterday. I can't say enough about Roy and all the times he
helped me out. I always enjoyed his candid and honest assessment of the
hobby. While I'm sure the investment bug hit him from time to time ;-) I al-
ways knew he was a collector at heart. I'll still keep in touch with him
since we live pretty close to each other and hopefully he'll be at the BG
show Sept. 5th.

It looks like this could be the end of SPORTS_MEMORABILIA as we know it. I
don't know how long this system / conference will be around, but I guess one
day we won't be able to access it any longer. I've set the conference to
WRITE once again, but be aware it could just go away without notice at any
time.

    	John,

I'm sure if we all had known that that was going to
happen we would have taken the time to wish Roy well,
and we still do, but he can't read about it because
he's already gone, so you'll have to convey our best
    	wishes to him.

Is there anyway that you can copy these notes over
to your system and open a new conference there, or if
that's not possible, then could you start a new one ?.
I think you are the best candidate since you still are
    	co-moderator of this one.

I'm shocked!! Roy, I really feel for you, and I'm sorry it had to
end this way. I remember when Tony D. took the package, it was a real
blow to this notes file, and now you, it really hits home that the
company is in tough times, and we are all vulnerable to the "tap on
the shoulder". You have been a great help to me over the years, and
its been kind of like a family on this notes file, we have all been
able to share our experiences together. Best of Luck Roy! I hope
the file continues, but I'm sure the pressure is on to dissolve it.

I forgot about that damn "Bwahahahahahahaha" thing of his. If any
of you guys ever called his house, he had some of the best phone
message things. His latest starts out with:

"Jean (his wife) and I are busy right now" and then you hear the
restauraunt scene from "Harry Loves Sally". Outrageous - I had to
dial back to let my wife hear it.

The one thing about dealing with Roy was we never talked prices. I
know we knew when something was expensive, but we never said "Hey,
that's worth this much in Beckett's". If I sent him my want list
and it had Frank Thomas on it he'd never say anything and I always
dealt the same with him. He'd kid me and say I was sandbagging on
him at times. If there was something I needed to complete my set
he'd pull it from his set etc. If he found something at a show he
thought I might like he'd pick it up for me.

This is what card collecting was about - almost the same as when we
were kids - the only value was who the player was, not how much it
cost. Yeah, Mike I know get a ride on the turnip wagon, but you got
to admit it was a lot more fun back then without having to memorize
every price guide on the planet or mortgaging your house.

It's still fun (expensive, but fun) and it's guys like Roy who made
it fun. There's a lot of other people in here who deal like Roy
now and I'm sure he had some influence on that. I'll miss you Roy !

Now that I know this is going to be seen by roy, I'll add something
    more personal.

Hey roy, I was just reading this string of replies and realized
it kinds of sounds like you might have passed away. All these
accolades being sent your way, I have one question: If you were
so well liked, how come lately just about *everyone* was falling over
themselves trying to fill your want list?? I almost got run down
    by the rush ;-)

Seriously, do keep in touch and I expect you to hit up one or more
of us to post want lists for you. The rest is usually all US Mail
already so it shouldn't be hard to keep in touch and continue the
card exchange. You probably have nearly everyone's address already!

p.s. Who is your manager/person responsible for cerbus::? Contact
me if you see this soon, we want to move this notes file! Anyone else
know who to contact? I'm willing to do the legwork and possibly
host the conference, although I'm not sure where it can go until
thing settles down around here ;-(

    Roy,

If you ever get in and read this note, Good Luck and Best Wishes in
    what ever opportunities you pursue!!!

You really help me a great deal to better understand this hobby by
answering a lot of my dumb questions.

After reading all the replies and knowing that Roy will get to see
these, I realized I forgot to thank you for all the cards we trading,
all the unique sets you offered me, especially the Disney set for my
daughter!! If you ever get an extra Series II set, I know a 14 year old
    that would probably be interested.

I'd like to extend the offer others have made to please feel free to send
us your needs and we'll figure out how to get them into this conference.
If you land a job with a company that has networking capabilites to the
outside world, there's always Internet or Bitnet communications. Or you
could consider CompuServe and "talk" to us that way.

I'm in the phone book in Acton, Mass. Feel free to call or write
    anytime.

him my address over the Tube, and if you ever need anything or if you
want to drop me a line,I'd be very happy to hear from you.

I want to say one more thing, when I first heard of this notesfile
"Sports Memorabilia", I put my first message on the screen I did it in
Capital letters,I don't remember who it was but he sent me a message
and says to me,stop yelling,so I said to myself who the hell is this
nut and what is he talking about,I didn't quite understand what he
meant, but 20 minutes later you sent me a message saying don't let it
bother you,and you explained to me why that nut said that.I just want
to thank you for telling me that so I wouldn't make an ass of myself
    again.
