154.1TWO RON HELLERS??WRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 20 1990 11:2713
      What gives with all the action around these cards?
    I saw these for the first time yesterday and people were buying these
    like they were the hottest thing on earth. I bought a box and a couple
    of packs just to see what they were like. They are nice. It seems like
    everybody in football is trying to outdo the other with the looks of
    their cards. To bad baseball isn't this way.
      The first pack I opened had a player named Ron Heller on two cards
    #84 and #3?? three hundred and something. Anyone know about this? Are
    there two Ron Hellers? Forgive my ignorance, but Baseball is more my
    game.

      Thanks,
            Bill

    Where can I find them ! I have been to alot of stores and the
    only cards that I see are SCORE & PRO SET. Are they going for
    the regular price ($.50) per pack,or are they the UPPERDECK
    of Football ($1.00) a buck a pack.

154.7BJ's had'em for 5 mins.WRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 20 1990 15:4810
      John

      If you got to Northboro at the 5 and 10 I told you about, they had
    3 boxes left last night. They were $30 a box and BJ's had them for
    $11.88 a box but they sold out to dealers just about when I got there.
       Guys had as many as two or three shoping carts full and that started
    me wondering what was in them to start a kind of buying spree like
    that.

      Now about that Heller card?????????? Are there two Hellers?
154.9Rare errors?????WRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 20 1990 16:059
       Just heard that Fleer is limiting this issue to one case per dealer
    and total print = only 10,000 cases. Take that rumor with a grain of
    salt if you like. They susposedly wanted to see if they would sell
    before deciding to make more for next year and it is a premiere(sp?)
    issue.
      I was told also that there are some very rare errors in boxes printed
    before a certain run number stamped on the inside top of the box.
    Somethig about 015 or at least something with a 5. So if it's errors
    you are after, go for it!!!!!
154.11Wow look at that guy move!!!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 20 1990 16:169
      John,

       Beckett says #84=Terry Hoage rc $.20. Then will the real Ron Heller
    please stand up?? I can't make heads or tails of foosbal. All I know is
    that my card is made by Fleer and says that Ron heller is #84 and (I
    think) #379 for the other. He is a common and plays on two different
    teams at the same time. Must be tough come play off time????????
    Not to mention all the traveling he must have to do.
      Maybe there are two guys with the same name.....?????
154.12I want to be like Donruss!!!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 20 1990 16:203
      Maybe that was 100,000 cases.....that would sound more like old
    "let's be more like Donruss" and flood the market with cards nobody
    can sell Fleer.
154.15I WRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 20 1990 16:383
      If it is a rare error maybe I can run to a show with it and sell
    for 3 ziggabucks before it drops back down to $.05. HAHAHA!!! smiley
    face and all that!!!
154.16Card #82... Evans & Cunningham?GUIDUK::EVANSSat Jul 21 1990 04:3622
	The 1990 Fleer packs were out West almost 6 weeks ago. I found
	them at the local drugstore at a very reasonable price per pack
	(6 pack maximum per visit) and decided "ok, I'll bite". I have
	completed the set EXCEPT for card #84. I will trade anyone for
	card #84 as I have some doubles for that purpose. Send mail if
	interested.

	I agree with Roy regarding the design; not impressed, am more
	attracted to the SCORE design.

	BTW, there is some sort of mixup with cards #82 and #83. I have
	a card #82 that shows Randall Cunningham and a card #82 that shows
	Byron Evans. Yes, that's right, both cards feature different
	players but have the same card number on the back. Some dealers
	have told me that Card #83 was not printed because either Evans or
	Cunningham was supposed to have been card #83. Anyone heard more
	about this?

154.18talk about confusion!!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZMon Jul 23 1990 11:2110
      I had a chance to work on this set over the weekend and am about
    15 cards away from a set. The set that I have has a checklist that
    has two Ron Hellers on it, one on the Falcons and one on the Raiders.
    My Falcon card is no. 84 and the Raider is No. 379 or 378 (I don't
    remember exactly which). I am going to believe that there are two
    Hellers til I hear otherwise. I did hear that Fleer had to stop the
    presses to correct some errors and that may be why there is some
    differences in numbers. If the box you buy has a certain no. on
    the box lid then you would get some of the major errors. One is rumored
    to be an error on Montana's stats. Anyone else hear anything?
154.20$27 a box, not bad, but....SOFBA1::BELISLEMike Belisle MRO4-1/H20 297.3324Mon Jul 23 1990 19:0913

    Has anyone seen a box going for under $27? There's a card shop
    down my street selling them for $27 (one box per customer). I
    still think thats a lost of money for a football card that does
    come close the the likes of Pro Set or Score... I know that FLeer
    claims to have a limited amount in print, but this is going a bit
    to far.

    I haven't been collecting cards that long, but, it doesn't take
    Einstein to figure out whats going on here.

154.21I hate what dealers do for the hobby!!!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZMon Jul 23 1990 19:187
     Rep. .20

       Don't blame Fleer for what the dealers are doing to the prices.
    As I said earlier B.J's was selling them for $11.88 a box and I saw
    them at a gas station for .65 cents a pack at their inflated price.
    I think that Fleer intended them to go for about .50 cents.

154.24Another one?????WRKSYS::SCHWARTZTue Jul 24 1990 11:2015

      Guess what guys! More confusion! Two Bobby Humphry cards. No. 23
    and no. 363. Anyone else find this? And to correct the situation
    the No's. for the Heller cards are No. 84 and No. 378. Does anyone
    have the correct cards? Fleer checlists are wrong also. According
    to Beckett, card 363 is not listed. Does anyone know who it should be?
      I only need 11 cards to finish this set but, It looks like an
    impossible trick if they never made correct cards and aren't going
    to print anymore. This would make the cards worthless I would think.
      Anybody that has the correct version of card 363 and 84 and needs
    others to complete a set let's trade.

    John,
      Thanks for helping me out with my football Ignorance, I would have
    stared at those cards for hours and never noticed the spelling. Not
    having the cards with me , I could have sworn they were both spelled
    the same. Learning is not coming as easy as it used to. Now it is work.

    Al,
     I have your want list and I'll get what I can tonight if I have the
    doubles. My son is fooling with the pro set and is finding it a tough
    set to get together. He has about 500 cards and still needs over a 100
    to complete the first series ( I consider that set a waste of my time
    and money). I'll have about a billion common doubles at this rate.
154.28Well, my 1990 Fleer Football is complete.SOFBA2::BELISLEMike Belisle MRO4-1/H20 297.3324Fri Jul 27 1990 11:4615

    Well I broke down yesterday and went out and bought myself a box ($27).
    That was the cheapest I could find them for, only .75 a pack.

    Well, the box has broken all previous records. I was able to make a
    complete set (except for some All-Pro special cards). And the doubles
    I got where excellent. a couple Andre Ware, Bo, Jeff George, Montana,
    Rice, Snow and Steve Grogan 8^)))

    There are 25 All-Pro cards, I got 7 of them from this box.

    The cards look pretty nice too (not as good as pro set or score though).

154.30Rack packsWRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 27 1990 16:083

      I saw Rack packs at Kay-bee's for $1.99. 45 cards + 1 pro action card
    per rack.
154.33Rare but not greatWRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 27 1990 19:318

     The pro action cards are a sub set that is sacttered randomly
    thruout wax cases. about 1 card per 15 wax packs. Subset is 25
    cards and there is one in every rack pack like the score and topps
    racks. I don't think they are much of a big deal other than it seems
    hard to put a set together. I would think they will have a collector'
    s value to them. Put one in a set of Fleer football and I would think
    that the set would be worth at least double.

154.35Anyone see a correct Montana?WRKSYS::SCHWARTZMon Jul 30 1990 11:309

      Did anyone collecting this set get a Montana card with correct
    stats on it? I thought that this was to be corrected. I collected
    5 of them all showing him with 3,000 or better TD's per season and
    a career total of over 32,000 TD's. I knew he was good....but!
    Also could someone tell me if there is a possible mix up of faces
    on the back of the two Humphery --Humphrey cards. It looks to me like
    the high no. card has the low no. card's face on it. Anybody know what
    he looks like enough to identify?

154.39My 3 cents silver worthHURON::BRADANESEWed Aug 01 1990 12:4121

    I opened a box of fleer FB and got 1-400.
    Problem was that I got only about 5-7 of the 25 all pro cards.
    I understand that there are only 5-10 all pro per box.

    Incidentally, I stopped by the local store which had just got his
    shipment of fleer FB cards, and was charging .50 a pack.
    The owner said he only got 1 box, but his brother had attended a show
    Sunday and I think he saw the prices($25.00-30.00 a box 1.00 a apack)
    and pulled tyhem of the shelf for his own collection.

    Good news for those who waited. In an article in SCD last week there
    was an interview with the president of FLEER and he said that there was
    not a shortage of FB cards and (I'm trying to remember) I believe he
    said that dealers were going to get their orders. He wouldn't give the
    actual production numbers.

    Well, contrary to my 'normal' luck with wax boxes.....I bought a box of
    FLEER football cards at a White Hen store yesteday...for $15...That's
    right, FIFTEEN DOLLARS!!!! AND, the best part is that I got all but
    card #'s 28 and 164 to complete a set. I also got no more than 2 of any
    card. I like the look of the All Pro cards, and got 7 of them (all
    different) in the box. I'm now thinking that I might buy a couple more
    boxes, even at as much as $22/box, if this is the normal distribution.

    Touche, Roy. There is an abundance of scum out there, but a lot of
    dealers are just sheep. They hear Fleer's going to be rare, in great
    demand, etc., so they pay a riduculous price and try to get it back
    from the end consumer. Of course the manufacturers contribute mightily
    to the insanity with all the so-called "errors." Bottom line, though,
    is as stated in the last reply: "guess I am helping drive the price up
    by paying stupid prices." Now we gotta shop for gasoline as well as
    cards!

    I had dealers mad as hell at me this weekend. They are still getting
    anywhere between $1.50 and $2.00 for *one* pack of Fleer football
    cards. I went to a couple of flea markets where dealers were quite
    abundant, and asked many of them (in front of many potential buyers)
    why they were still getting ridiculous prices for Fleer football
    when all you had to do was drive up the street a few miles and get
    them from a store for $.50/pack. Well fifty people must have done
    a mass exodus out of the place, and dealers were telling me I was
    ruining their business and profits. I promptly said *someone* has
    to let these people know where you ripoff dealers are coming from!

    I did make it to 3 separate flea markets yesterday. Many people were
    extremely gratified at what I had done.

    I have a couple with the error but none without. I assume the error
    card may be plentiful.

    RE:  #82/#83/#84/Heller/Hoage
    There are two Ron Hellers. One plays for Piladelphia and for Seattle.
    (The Atlanta Heller went to Seattle via plan B.) There are two
    different cards bearing the number 82; Randall Cunningham and Byron
    Evans. There is also card #83 with Byron Evans. Card #84 is Ron
    Heller. It seems that Fleer must have mistakenly put the number
    82 on some of the Byron Evans cards.

    My questions are: Is there really a Terry hoage card (Beckett's
    list this as #84) ? What number? Anyone have one?

    Here's some news circulating around Dallas.

    1. Fleer has announced that they stopped production of their Football
    cards to begin the Basketball production. I read this in the Dallas
    paper a week ago Friday. Went to a show yesterday and Fleer boxes were
    selling for $34.00. since I'm not into FB cards I don't know if this
    is normal or high. But I'd suspect that prices will rise higher.

    2. A disturbing (to me anyway) comment on the radio this morning. The
    AM sports guy mentioned that dealers are hiring kids to get
    ballplayer's autographs at the ball park because they know players are
    more likely to sign cards/balls/whatever for kids than adults.
    Tomorrow mornings talk show is going to do a special on this. I'll be
    able to catch some of it on the way to work. I'll try to update.

    They interviewed some ball players this year,and they said
    that they know that this is going on,so if they sign an autograph
    on a card,they will bend one of the corners,and if it's on a

    Check the price out on the Lombardi Trophy, $500.00, why is this card
    so expensive. Does anyone have one ? I heard that some of the
    distributors are using some sort of a metal detector to find them
    in the boxes.I didn't believe it when I heard it,but now that I
    know what the going price is I can see why.

    Guys,

    Check out this months issue of Beckett's.. It has a section on the
    Lombardi Hologram and it's available. Also, it mentions that Pro-Set
    has been putting into every box a metal strip, so you can't detect
    the Lombardi card.

    Does anyone know if the Lombardi Hologram will be put into the series
    II cards?

      They have decided to do a special of P.T. Barnum instead. (8^)
      :). There's one born every minute!

    Wasn't sure where to put this. Anyway, I'm not big on fb, but I saw
    some hof cards (Swell '90) this weekend. Apparently there are 160 in
    the set. Are these cards reprints of hof players? Are they collectible?

    	Thanks,jim

    Jim -

    They ARE collectible, but I don't believe the average collector does
    collect them. I collect the Chargers out of the set, because it fits
    my domain, but that's another discussion that is in here somewhere.

154.85Is $1.50/pack too much for Swell?ELMAGO::JVERGOWed Dec 05 1990 13:226

    Thanks guys,

    One more quick one. I saw them priced at $1.50/pack. Is this reasonable
    or should I keep looking?

	If you're talking about the Swell FB cards, $1.50 per pack is WAY
	too much to pay. They retail for $.50 per pack; should be less
	per box.
