145.0. "1990 Score Football" by EBBV03::MONDALTO () Fri Jun 08 1990 11:20

The 1990 score Football cards are out. Looks like they want to
be one step ahead of Topps, now I know why they stopped producing
the baseball cards. Looks like Topps has a long way to go to
out do Score on these cards.

Wouldn't it be nice if the new Bowman football cards looked like the
OLD Bowman football cards! The only painted cards we get these days are
the Donruss Diamond Kings, and in my humble opinion, most high school
art students could render better likenesses than Perez and Steele.

If you haven't already seen it,wait till you see the Jim Everett
"Ground Force" card. It's shows Jim getting ready to release a
pass, and who ever took the picture, took it from a ground view
showing the big puffy grey clouds that you would see right before
    a storm. (Excellent Card).

145.11Let swap for complete sets22048::BELISLEMike Belisle MRO4-1/H20 297.3324Fri Jun 15 1990 11:4413
I went out and bought myself a box. The box included all but 28
cards for a complete set. Some of these cards are amazing! The
picture quality on the 'Ground Force' is simply amazing. Score
did a great job printing these cards too, all the cards where
perfectly centered. I would like to know if anyone would be
interested in swapping a few cards for the cards I need.

I have over 300 doubles to swap, so if your interested mail me
the list of cards you need and I'll tell you the cards I need
and we can work something out.

I got an ad in the mail from Steve Myland offering Score FB at $275 per
20-box case. I don't have the address with me, but he is a frequent
    advertiser in SCD.

I also bought a box of Score. However, the distribution I got was
fairly poor. I am missing 38 cards in the set, including numbers 8
thru 16, which I assume contain some mighty good players. On the other
hand, boy have I got the Joe Montana doubles. Anyway, a question. At
the end of the set, there are 10 cards called "Hot Gun" and 10 cards
called "Ground Force". However, each of these cards says "1 of 12", "2
of 12", etc. What gives? Are these errors? Will the implied series 2
contain more of these cards? Does anybody know?

    RE: .17

You are right, of course, that I could have done a lot worse. I was
just spoiled by my success in buying one Fleer box. Of the regular
series of 400 cards (excluding the deliberately hard-to-get 25
specials), I got 389 different, and need only 11 more. In fact, that
distribution was so good that I have no more that 2 cards of any one
player, i.e., no triplicates. Now that's distribution.

I tried to be as careful as possible typing this in, but cannot
give a 100% guarantee that there aren't any typos. I put form
feeds in so that if you extract and print this you should end up
    with three pages.

145.23Question for football expertsWRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 13 1990 11:469

I have a card # 269 that doesn't match the player name listed
in price guides or what was typed in here. What gives? I don't
remember the guy's name that is on the card, but I do know
that it is not Jessie Tuggle. I am not into football and could
not tell one player from another. I just bought them to see
how they looked. BTW is $16.00 a good price for a box?

145.24Becketts errorsSALEM::ALIZIOFri Jul 13 1990 13:4237

    	re. .23

I'm interested in finding out whose name appears on your card
#269. I typed in the list that appears in this notesfile, so
I'd like to know if I goofed. When I get home tonight I'll
    	double check card #269.

I picked up the July/August issue of Beckett's football and
noticed errors in their checklist! For card #289 they have
someone other than Tony Mandarich listed. And I think card
#290 has some rookie who doesn't appear in Series I at all.
I never heard of this rookie either.

    	Also, Becketts cards 134-A, 136-A, 134-B and 136-B. The "A"
variations are priced at $2 to $3 while the "B" variation is
priced at $.15. What's weird is that they describe the "A"
variation as "with helmet on back". All the cards have a helmet
on the back in the center of the left margin! I would think
the rare ones would be without helmets. I suppose that Becketts
could have confused the two. It just doesn't seem logical that
if Score got it correct on the first print run, they would goof
up on the second run. I was wondering why my local card dealer
had written "first run" on the open box of Score Football cards
he had on the counter, now I know why. If anyone here has cards
without helmets on the back please let us know.

$16.00 sounds like a great price for a box. They were $18 a
box in the Derry/Salem NH area when they first came out. Now
they are getting $27. Where did you purchase yours? When
Series II comes out in August I'd like to buy a box, but not
for $27. If anyone else has less expensive sources, please
    	post them here.

145.26It's in Northboro Mass.WRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Jul 13 1990 16:1012

Sounds to me like a problem with the guide that I looked at more
than anything else. Just threw me for a loop for a while.
I bought the cards out of an open box at a place called Obrien's
.05 & .10 in Northboro Mass. They only had series 1 though and may
be sold out by now. This place is a great place to go when you can't
find stuff any where else. They carry most popular types of cards
in baseball and football and people are pressuring for hockey and
basketball. He has Donruss and Fleer for around $13 a box at the
moment and Topps racks at $.99. They may have some error racks of
Donruss left if you go for that kind of thing.

145.29Helmets and "errors"SALEM::ALIZIOMon Jul 16 1990 13:2921

You are correct; it is the player's helmet that they are talking
about. I checked through my cards and my Kevin Butler (#134)
has no helmet. I have two Vai Sikahema (#136), one with helmet
    	and one without.

I think that Joey Browner's card (#147) has two variations.
Neither shows a helmet, but one is almost a profile shot while
the other is facing nearly straight ahead.

I thumbed through a copy of SCD and noticed there were 4 "errors".
I can't remember them all, but only one seemed legitimate to
me. I think it was Mike Johnson's card (#35) that showed his
teammate (another Johnson) on the front. Another "error" was
a card that had All America instead of All American. This is
an error? I call it a typo. It should be no more valuable
for this type of mistake. Hopefully Score won't correct this.

145.31Errors schmerrors, who cares?SALEM::ALIZIOMon Jul 16 1990 18:4725

    	re. other error(s)

Anyone having the latest SCD can detail them exactly. All I
remember about the other error was that it was a defensive
player and that for last year's stats he was credited with
one fumble recovery instead of two, or vice versa. In my
opinion this isn't worth correcting and shouldn't affect the
card's value. As I mentioned in my previous note, a legitimate
error is having the wrong player's picture on the card. SCD
did describe one of these. This seems to occur most frequently
when there are players with the same last name on the same team.

SCD seems to encourage its subscribers to spot "errors". As
I recall, each one listed had the name, city and state of the
discoverer. There must be people who have nothing better to
do than go over these cards with a fine tooth comb. How else
would you spot "America" vs "American". And how would you know
that player X had two fumble recoveries instead of one? This
is a big waste of time as far as I'm concerned.

During DECworld, Score football were going for .50 a pack at the World

    I got a hand-collated set yesterday for $22 at John's cards, a new shop

    Rick
145.42Yup, I got hosed!NUTMEG::JACUNSKIFri Aug 10 1990 15:467
Yup, the trivia cards are included, but I haven't checked on the
variations. Actually $22 is a "can't wait" price, because the issue of
Tuff Stuff I got the next day includes numerous adds for the whole 600
card set for $25. All I got was Series I (Ididn't even know there WERE
2 series). Oh well, they are nice cards. And the pleasure of building
the newer sets is gone for me. I'd just as soon buy the whole thing all
at once. I've got plenty of building to do with the 50s and 60s stuff.

Take U.D's latest trick with their Reggie subset as an example.
I refuse to buy even 1 pack for this very reason. I will buy the set.

    re: collectors assoc.

Why not! One of the hot issues at the National (supposedly) was a
dealers association. This is supposed to police the dealers. Maybe
I'm too skeptical but it seems like an opportunity to price fix and
boot out the dealer that is giving a fair shake to the collector. On
the positive side, maybe they'll boot out the dealers who are gouging
the collector. Of course they could lock out the small time
collector/dealer who is in it to keep his hobby alive.

Geez, somehow I get the impression that you fellas have a h__d-on with
    these scum bag dealers.

There should be enough readers here to make decent trades and sales
with each other. If you want a factory set go to a show and get it
there. There the S.B. dealers have to compete out in the open with all
    the other S.Bs.
Buy from the stores that don't have to make a profit from selling
cards like K-Mart, Woolworth, 7-11 etc.
Why should I pay a dealer $2.00 a pack for Leafs when the local Shell
    station sells them for $1.00.
    Come-on guys get it together.

Possibly higher when they compare notes.
BTW where is this Shell station you talk about? If you have
alternatives please post addresses. If it is on the west coast it
wouldn't do people here on the east coast much good.

Are you saying K-Mart, Woolworth, etc. are not making a profit on

Dealers frequently lower prices to compete at shows. I've heard dealers
refer to the Bishop Guertin show in Nashua, NH as a "give-away" show,
and many won't even do the September show because of the wide-open
    competition.

re "scumbag" references in general: do you guys consider dealers in
other types of merchandise to automatically be scumbags? Car
salespeople, well, yeah, but bakers? hardware stores? computer dealers?
photography supplies? Or is just baseball card dealers?

Roy, that's all I wanted to hear, really, that not all professional
dealers (or even weekend dealers) are lower than litter box filler.
But, in fact, bakers, hardware vendors, and merchants in general will
react to supply and demand. Sometimes it's a fine line between that and
gouging (witness the current gasoline prices). Merchants in any
business tend to charge what the market will bear, and why not? How
many of us bought a Canseco rookie from a dealer for $1 in 1986, then
went back a couple years later to share our profits with the dealer??

You're right, though, that the average baker or auto salesman doesn't
spend lots of time trying to hoard stuff, create shortages, etc. But
the AVERAGE dealer doesn't do that either. Seems there is at least one
such clown in each community, however, and in my experience the other
dealers neither like, respect, approve of, or deal with this kind of
jerk. Maybe it's just that the bad apples are so much more noticeable.

I don't know if you want to call these dealers scumbags, but I'll
tell you one thing, their not being fair by going to B.J.'s up
in Salem,N.H. with their friends and buying up just about all
the good Cards (boxes). I live in Salem and make frequent trips
there (almost everyday) hopping to get lucky and pick up a
COUPLE of boxes of cards Football & Baseball for $11.98 per,
but everytime I get there, they are all sold out. I was told by a

Yes I live on the west coast.

    re .62

Yes I'm saying that K-Mart, Woolworth, etc are not selling cards to
make a profit. They don't have to. They sell toys, clothes, dishes,
TVs, stereos and what ever else you can think of. If they buy a box of
cards for $9.00 they can turnaround and sell it for $9 or $10. They
don't sell cards to pay the rent. THe rent is paid with the markup on
    the big ticket items.

But what does the baseball card store owner HAVE to sell to pay the
rent? He only has one product to sell.

According to Score (214-647-2728) they have the following (non-regular)
    subsets:

    	1990 Score Young Superstars
    	1990 Score Hottest 100

    	1991 Score Young Superstars
    	1991 Score Hottest 100

It's important to note that the 1990 Score Hottest 100 have the same
fronts as the 1990 Score regular football, but different numbers on
back. However 1991 Score Hottest 100 are the exact same cards as the
