362.0. "1992 Upper Deck Baseball" by CERBUS::KARLSON (Only 22 shopping days until Xmas!) Tue Dec 03 1991 13:54

"Continuing it's popular subset, the 1992 Upper Deck baseball low
number series will contain a nine-card 'Heroes of Baseball' sub-
set. The focus of this subset will be none other than Ted
Williams. Ted Williams will also autograph 2,500 cards to be
    randomly inserted into wax packs".

    In today's USA Today.

As usual I'm going to take a different look at this.
Three Boston players will be featued in subsets this year Orr,
Clemens and our original Bad Boy Teddy ballgame. With all of
the complaining most of us do, I couldn't imagine being
a sports fan and not living in Boston. When will Larry's subset be
    out!!!!
    Sorry New York,
    Sorry Philly,
    Sorry Chicgo,
    Sorry LA

Thats nice. I was told the dealer price on these is 467 or 461 per
case. Not bad make better than $100 bucks on passing merchandise
through. I'll bet you need to pay up front as well. Know the dealer
    really has nothing invested.

Bought a pack yesterday, $1.50/pack (ouch!). As usually They've
    dobe it again. Nice card.

    15 cards per pack
Look for the collector holograms (there gold (not silver) and
			    randomly packed)
    Find the Williams

    I bought (ordered) 4 boxes at $27ea

I bit on a box at $31 yesterday, there are nice once again. Two
sides of the card are shadowed under the boarder to give the front
picture depth, as if it is coming of the card at you, nice effect.
I got only 2 or 3 ted heroes in the box, only 2 gold team holos :-(

Are the heroes numbered sequentially sonce 1989? The two I got are
31 and 32 of 36, there are still just 9/10 williams heroes though,
    yes?

I was kind of suprised too on the holograms, maybe there are other
holos but I don't like so. The team ones are kind of boring.
I'm sure there is at least one SP card, but I didn't get one.

I bought 2 packs today, just to see how they looked, and I got SP3 in
the second pack. It is "Prime Time's Two" It has Deion Saunders on
the front, and talks about how he plays two sports on the back. So
there must be at least 3 SP cards.

Does anyone know how many cards will be in the regular set?
I'm new at this and I'm trying to decide whether to stick to
hockey or go for BB too. I'd like to know what I'm getting into,
because once that first pack is opened.............it's too late!

While, I'm at it, what other details are of interest about
the BB set - e.g. holograms? heroes cards? SP cards?

Also Frankie Rodrigeuz won't be in this year's UD set 'do to a
mutual agreement with UD' whatever that means. Maybe he is
going exclusive also like taylor and kelly. So it appears that
his only UD baseball card will be the one from the 1991 final edition.

Topps and the draft picks sets have the semi-exclusive rights to
put those three in their sets this year.

HOWEVER, UD will be producing a minor-league set this year, and
want to bet they're in it ... ?

I thought it through, I'm not going to buy wax boxes this year. I'm
going to buy the jumbos. This way I'll be able to continue the silver
slugger set, get all the regular issue cards, and maybe even find some
sp3's. I don't know about you guys , but I've got cards coming out of
my ears, and all I collect is baseball.

They're called Homerun Heroes this year. There are 26 of them, the
person, not necesarily a Super Star who hit the most homers for his
    team....ie. Frank Thomas,Jack Clark,Darryl Strawberry,Matt Williams.
I split a box with a friend....we were not lucky enough to get a
Thomas in our box. The dealer we brought from was pricing the Thomas
at $15.00 not wanting to give anything away before the next issue of
    Becketts.

Rumor or Fact....This same dealer also told me that Upper Deck had
sold out to a Japanese company. Has anyone heard
anything about this? Is this rumor or fact?

The new holograms are out. They are card-sized, silver holograms.

There is an engraved waving pennant in the middle of the card, with
a quarter-sized team logo in the middle of the pennant.

At the top of the card is the name of the team's stadium, and the
date that the Upper Deck "Heroes of Baseball" game will be played
at that stadium (old-timer's game for us old-timers).

There is indeed a Florida Marlins hologram, so I assume there will
be a Colorado Rockies hologram -- even though there is no date for
a HOB game at their stadiums.

Anyone know if there's an AL/NL hologram in this "series"?

    They are again randomly inserted.

(The boxes at BJ's must be "second" printing since they have these
     silver holograms in them)

I remember when the Aaron hologram first came out. The dealers were
saying it's real scarce and they were asking 30-40$. Like Mike said,
in a few months it was down to 5$. I got three Aaron's out of one

The latest run of low number cards are out, and these included the
Heroes of Baseball cards (not Williams) "special" cards, ala last
    year's Jenkins/Perry/Killebrew/"Trio" card.

Last year's were numbered H1:H4, this year's are H5:H8, and the
players are Yaz, Brock, and Vida Blue (along with a "trio" card).

Each player autographed 3,000 of his card, and they are randomly
    inserted.

Last year's cards sell for $12-20 each.

Also, a dealer told me that the HH2 (Williams Hologram) is only
available in the jumbos -- true or false? Anyone pulled one from
    a wax box?

	FYI

Went to BJ's during lunch, they still have plenty of boxes
to sell... at $24.95 - $27.55 if your not a memeber. They
don't seem to be as hot as they once where.. BJ's has had
these cards for about a week now, and there's still plenty
	to go around.

That's my bitch about UD, no limit to there production.
Making these cards collector's items only.

Find one Hero's card and the box is payed for!

Whats the distribution of the hero's cards per case?
Are you guaranteed one card per box?

362.39CERBUS::KARLSONOnly 239 shopping days until Xmas!Thu Apr 30 1992 18:1818

No idea about the distribution. From what I understand from
different people last year, the distribution was terrible
(thus the fairly high prices, fairly stable price).

I opened one box of these latest printing, and got ..

o NO limited edition HOB cards (Yaz, Brock & Blue, Trio)
    	o 3 HOB/Williams cards (no cover card)
o 1 Silver/Pennant Holo (MTL - already had it, building up
quite a bunch of doubles for those who open these boxes
and want to trade silver/pennant holograms!)
o 1 SP3 (Deino) card -- like this card a lot! Neat looking.
o Very few of the rookies.
o At least *3* team xlist cards PER PACK.

came in. He had bought 2 boxes and got a SIGNED Fingers and a
SIGNED Brock. He is a retired gemtlemen and had the cards with him.
He wanted hard covers for them. He got both at BJ's in Salem, NH.
Amazing...if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I never would
    have believed it!

    240,000 sets were produced.

    60 sets per case.

    4,000 cases were produced.
