662.0. "1994 Upper Deck All-Time Heroes of Baseball" by PENUTS::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN: 297-9527) Sun Oct 09 1994 13:11

I opened a couple of boxes of the 1994 Upper Deck All-Time Heroes of
Baseball. There were 48 packs per box, 9 regular cards per pack and
1 "gold" card per pack. The gold cards are the same as the regular
cards except they have a special gold foil stamp denoting Baseball's
    125th anniversary.

Most of the cards are black and white except for a few of the high-
light cards which feature the highlight in black and white and the
player inset in color. There is also an Upper Deck Heroes of Base-
ball Player set which features players participating in the Heroes
of Baseball games and these shots are in color.

The regular player cards also have a small corner head shot of the
player. Many Hall of Famers are featured (Mays, Williams, Mantle and
so forth) and the set also includes cards of Steve Carlton and Nolan
Ryan. Some of the subsets are pretty nice including the highlights
and Diamond Legends. The backs of the regular cards are in yellow
and black and they have a small bio, the player's best season, his
average season and major league totals.

There are 225 cards in the set and I made close to three sets from
the two boxes. As far as inserts go, there are the three 1954 Topps
Archives cards of Ted Williams (#'s 1 and 250) and Mickey Mantle
(#259). I got two in each box and (two #1's, 250 and 259). There is
also a 20 card Next In Line Insert set of minor leaguers. The cards
say only 1 of 2500. I got one per box, but who cares about these.

The card stock is thin and the cards aren't UV coated (so you don't
have to worry about them melding together). Some of the shots are
kind of dark and I would have liked to see them include players from
the Negro Leagues. Probably because of contractual obligations or
whatever players such as Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige and Joe
DiMaggio are not in the set. Overall still a nice set so I give it
three out of five sticks on the Gum-o-meter. More players and a
thicker card stock would've gotten it a higher grade.

I also opened boxes with the same opinion as John. I like the next in
line. I got the boxes for 35. Does anyone have a clue on the auto
    graph inserts???
