603.0. "1993-94 Topps Premier Hockey" by PENUTS::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Mon Nov 08 1993 09:19

I picked up a box of 1993-94 Topps Premier Hockey yesterday. Nice
cards. 264 Cards in Series I. 36 packs per box, 12 cards per
pack including one Gold card. Subsets include 1st and 2nd Team
All-Stars, League Leaders and Super Rookies. They also include
the Black Gold Cards (1 per 72 packs). It looks like they have 12
Black Gold cards in this series and 12 more in Series 2. I lucked
out and got the "A" Winner card (includes Saleme, Juneau, Gretzky
    etc.).

    	I also picked up a box....didn't come close to a set...poor!
Did get a Black Gold Lemieux, but no "Winner" card...I must
    	be a "Loser" huh?

    	Nice cards...

I'm not sure, but looking at the wrapper it looked like the odds of
getting a Black Gold Winner card were 1 in 144 packs (or 1 in 4 boxes)
while the odds of getting just a regular Black Gold card were 1 in 72.
I haven't sorted mine yet, but I noticed lots of triples for some
cards. Also some of the packs had two of the gold cards. Ended up with
44 gold cards in one box.

    John and Chris,

I haven't seen the Topps Premier cards yet.

Where would you place then? Above or Below TSC? Somewhere else?

    Regards,
    Denny

Can't talk for John, but I think these are above TSC, that is if
TSC doesn't change their design...The Premier cards are nice, sorta
reminds me of UD, the gloss finish with white stock!

Atleast the Premier set has inserts, whereas TSC only has Member's
    	Choice!

What are the cost for packs and boxes ? Does this mean Topps isn't
going to do it's regular set? This one and TSC make 2 and thats all
    each company is allowed.

Yes, the cards were kind of like UD with the glossy finish and white
stock. More stats than TSC. I'm getting a little tired with some of
the companies continually using the same basic design for their cards,
particularly Fleer Ultra. TSC isn't far behind.

I'd like to see Stadium Club create sets based on old issues such as
doing a set in 1955 or 1956 designs. I know Upper Deck is doing a set
of older ballplayers like the old T202 Hassan Triplefolders. I know
the 4 card Mantle, Williams and Jackson set they did for FanFest was a
preview. It should be a nice set, although I hope the art work is done
    a little better.
