599.0. "Recommendations on buying a BB card" by CSC32::R_SWANSON () Mon Nov 01 1993 16:05

    I'm looking to buy my neighbor a baseball card (or possibly more than
    1) for his upcoming birthday. I want to keep it under $50. Does
    anyone have any recommendations? He is 11 years old.
    Thanks

599.1Who's his favorite player ?WMOIS::ZELENT_JMon Nov 01 1993 16:4018

    	The first thing you should do is find out who his favorite players
    are, then ask for more info on which card(s) would be a good choice.

    		just a few off the top of my head;

    		You can still get some Cal Ripken rookies under $50

    		If you search you might find a Frank Thomas 90 Leaf
    		or any of a dozen of his better cards.

    		Any of Ken Griffey Jr. or Juan Gonzalez's better cards.

    		Some of Nolan Ryans older cards (just not to old).

    							Hope this helps

    He might want some other sport too. Shaquille? Bourque? Neely?
    Rice?

    If you don't want to ask directly, see if his or her parents have a
    clue which player (s) they collect. When you find out put a reply in
    this file and you'll be sure to get a cheap price and accurate grading.
    Good Luck
599.4He likes Andres and BoCSC32::R_SWANSONTue Nov 02 1993 14:559
    I talked to his parents and he is a Andres Gallaraga (Colorado Rockies)
    and a Bo Jackson (don't ask me) fan. I checked to see about getting a
    whole set of Rockies baseball cards but when I checked the price they
    were between $5-$10. I would like to get him something a little
    better than that as he does feed my dogs for me when I'm away.
    Possibly even looking for a baseball signed by Andres. Know where I
    can purchase one of those.

    Thanks

    One of the sports card price guides " TUFF STUFF" which is easily
    obtainable at any convenience store lists advertisements from many
    vendors selling all kinds of collectible stuff.
    The latest issue had several adverts for baseballs autographed by Bo in
    the area of about $25 or $35.

    (One of my boys is a big BO fan,too...)

    You might also look for a bat signed by either.
    Bo plays for the White Sox and had hip replacement surgert.
    I would be hesitant to get anything from Andres that is Rockies
    related-They were not his rookie tem, nor will it be his last team.

    You might also want to think about a replica of the teams shirt with
    the players name and number on the back.
599.8Ordered a Barry Bonds BBCSC32::R_SWANSONThu Nov 04 1993 15:245
    Thanks for all the ideas. I ended up buying a Tuff Stuff and then I
    ordered a BB signed by Barry Bonds. It was $35.

    Thanks again.
