593.0. "1993-94 UD Basketball" by SEND::TANCILL (Sponsered by nobody) Fri Oct 08 1993 15:07

    UD Series 1 hobby is out. Two insert sets, Jordan's Flight Team and
    3-D standout semi-holograms.  I've heard anywhere from 2 inserts
    to 5 inserts, probably like most UD product your insert count
    will vary from box to box.

    There is also a sliver redemdtion card for the top 10 draft picks
    who sign by Dec. 3, 1993. Interesting they gave themselves a bit
    longer than Fleer or Hoops, both of whom will give you those
    signed by Nov. 1, 1993. Another thing on the UD offer, it expires
    Dec. 31, 1993 and they state they will start fulfilling orders
    on Jan 1, 1994 (at the latest) and fulfillment will be complete
    by Feb 28, 1994.  I think both Hoops and Fleer's offers don't
    even expire until march of 94, never mind when you'll get the
    cards. If Webber holds out for more money than Bradley or
    Hardaway, could UD be the only one to get him in their lottery
    redemption set???

    Sadly, I did not see a "no purchase necessry" mail in for a chance to
    win the UD set, like you can with fleer and hoops.

    There is also an SP3 of Jordan/Chamberlain, seven straight scoring
    titles.

    Once again there will be another 3 or 4 inserts sets, one only in
    the hobby wax, another (future heroes) only in the locker boxes,
    yet another in the jumbos. Enough to make you ill. And that's
    just series 1...

    At least it is series 1/series 2 this year and no low #/high # crap.

    UV coating like the baseball and football, although it seems a little
    less than was on the caked baseball. Collation looks to be typically
    lousy and I also got a bunch of dupes in the majority of my packs
    (really annoying).

    The cards themselves are pretty nice, the usual great UD color
    and photography. First series is 255 cards, with some rookies
    who have signed included (Shawn Bradley, Rex Walters, Doug Edwards,
    George Lynch, Chris Mills, Sam Cassell, Nick Van Exel, Calbert
    Cheaney & Corie Blount).

    Interesting also are the Season Leader cards (#166-177). The fronts
    are almost a exect duplicate (ripoff?) of the Hoops Face-2-Face
    cards. The Season Leaders aren't double sided, but you'll do
    a double take first time you see one if you've also seen the
    face2face cards. I thought is was kinda funny.

    Any idea on the value of the Silver redemption cards?

593.2didn't get redemption card.UHUH::SOKOLMon Oct 11 1993 16:007
    Opened a box last night. Actually I thought that collation was the best
    from UD so far, only needed 13 cards to complete a set (of course
    theoretically should be 2 complete sets of 255 cards from a box of
    530). Got an SP5 (Jordan/Chamberlain) and 1 Jordan Flight Team
    (L.Johnson) and 3 holos Triple Double. Didn't get redemption card.

593.3silver & goldSEND::TANCILLSponsered by nobodyMon Oct 11 1993 20:3110

    There is actually a sliver redemption and a gold version too.
    The silver are reported to be about 1 every 2 boxes with
    the gold 1 every 4 or 8 boxes (depending on who you listen to).

    Value for the silver: people seem to be asking between $35-$50,
    for the gold, $75-$100. Not sure if anyone is getting that...

    Went to a small show today - picked up 2 sets for 10$ each. Got
    all the subsets and a set in one shot and cheaper than buying
    the boxes.

    I see the Heroes are only in the Locker Boxes. Also, there is a
    combination Header / Checklist card instead of separate cards for
    each.

    Got the Silver redemption for $15
    Bought a box of the retail. Instead of the flight team, it's got
    a 10 card all-rookie team. I got Shaq and 'zo in mine...

593.7Silver AND Gold from a box...ICS::LERRATue Nov 02 1993 11:558
    I apparently got fairly lucky with a box. I got both the silver and
    gold redemption cards, two 'triple double' holograms, one 'all
    rookie', and the Jordan SP3 card. I was, however, 27 cards short of a
    set. FWIT...a local dealer told me he was expecting Beckett to list
    the redemption cards at around $25 for silver, and $50 for gold.

    Series 2 is out. looks like it's loaded with subsets within the series
    (non-inserts). Only got 2 packs. Looks like the hobby has Jordan
    highlight inserts.

    I recieved my Upper Deck Silver Repemption set yesterday. The cards
    are pretty nice. Better than the regular Upper Deck Basketball design
    this year. The photos are full bleed, there's a silver "EXCHANGE"
    on the left hand side of each card. I wonder if the gold version will
    be the same except with gold lettering? My set was screwy, I got
    2 Webbers, 2 Bradleys, and no Mashburns.

    I received my Fleer Redemption set over the weekend. These cards are
    real similar to the regular issue except there's a circle in the lower
    right with the player's draft number. So if you like the 93-94 Fleer
    design, then you'll like 'em. I think they're pretty nice. I like
    the fronts quite a bit. I don't like the backs as much.

593.10when did you mail it?UHUH::SOKOLMon Feb 14 1994 17:564
    Just curious: how long ago did you mail your redemption card?
    I mailed mine on December 9th and still hasn't gotten my set yet.

593.11sent mine in earlySEND::MCEVOYWed Feb 16 1994 12:0616
    I mailed mine pretty early after purchasing one from crazy jeff
    shortly after they came out. It was probably late october/early
    november.

    The gold cards are the same except they have a gold exchange stamp
    instead of a silver one.

    I also received my Hoops redemption set last week, they're pretty nice,
    gold lettering, glossy photos of the players in their draft day hats,
    pretty similar to last years. Personally, I'd rather have an action
    picture of the player. So, out of the draft sets, I think I like
    the Upper Deck ones best, with Fleer a close second.
