580.0. "1993 Flair Baseball by Fleer" by CARTUN::PAVLOCK () Tue Aug 31 1993 16:08

    Just saw some '93 Flair Baseball cards yesterday at Hudmar's in
    Marlboro.

    What a nice product. Cards are very heavy stock, with excellant photos
    on both front and back. Dealer said, based on his memory, the cards
    would come packaged 24 packs of 10 cards each per box. He thought it
    would be a 300 card set.

    Anyone else have any info on the product?

    Regards,
    Denny

    I've heard suggested retail price is 3$. Quite expensive. Some pre-
    sell ads in SCD started at 80$ a box. Too much ...

580.2Way too muchSEND::TANCILLSponsered by nobodyFri Sep 03 1993 19:1312
Actually I heard SRP was $3.99/pack. 24 packs to box 10 cards to pack,
18 box cases that are costing dealers direct $60-$61/box. Who does Fleer
think they are? Plus it's going to come out late compared to UD SP and
Topps finest. Would you pay $70+ a box for 24 packs???

I also saw the promos/samples and while they are nice (and thick) I don't
think they are worth the hefty price. One neat feature is every players
autograph in gold/silver embossing, not machined all the same like 93
UD, but the real players autograph reproduced.

580.3When will super de dooper be out?MSDOA::PARKERJFri Sep 03 1993 19:237
    Saw a note on the usenet offering these for $95 a box. Keep 'em.
    Heard UD was planning a super de dooper premium card. KInd of a ultra
    Ultra premium. Ridiculous. The good ol' days of card collecting are
    relly gone. Just when you think you can buy the best product on the
    market some one come out and one ups it.

That's why I've decided to just stick with my old standby that I've been buying
for years (since 1967), and buying for the same reason: just for the fun of
collecting them. Basic Topps is good enough for me. Now if I can just remember
what I've already bought...

I hope to see some of you at the show tomorrow!

    This must be a new product for the kids ? I thought 3$ was bad. Well,
    someone will buy it I'm sure.

580.6be careful......DNEAST::GALLANT_RAYTue Sep 07 1993 10:074
    Be careful of these cards, I was looking at a dealers promos/samples
    this weekend, and the cards are already starting to seperate. I know
    they may have been handled a bit but because of the thickness, I do
    think you need to keep this in mind when purchasing.

    These are out now in the NE area, $4/pack SRP, at a show sunday
    in merrimack they were pretty much $5/ack, $90/box. A few people
    were buying packs, but I saw no one moving boxes.

    I think they are pretty nice, but $4/pack is too much, never mind
    $5. There is a 20 card "Wave of the Future" subset of today's
    young stars, Piazza, Sele, etc. they are 1:4 packs or an average
    of 6 per box. These have a wave/ocean background and are also
    fairly nice. I think Topps Finest shooting up so far so fast may
    give Fleer Flair room to move up and still sell, alough patience
    maybe your friend here since Fleer has said the amount going to
    other outlets (i.e. retail/wharehouses) will be determined by
    how much the hobby soaks up of its allocation. Sounds like to me they
    are preparing to ship to retail in a couple weeks.

    Direct hobby dealer cost was around $60 and change, so even at a BJ's
    or Costco these maybe rather steep. Also it will take several boxes to
    come close to a set, one dealer I spoke to broke 4-5 boxes and was 6
    cards short of a first set and 20-some short of a second set.

    Hi,

    Is FLEER going to produce a FLAIR set for other sports, such as
    football/basketball/hockey?

    They probably will. They only had one hockey line last year so it's
    possible that may be the second hockey item for them.

    I've seen pre-sell ads in SCD for Topps Finest Football and Basketball
    at 125$ a box. Dealers who were able to get the baseball product at
    cost must've made a killing.

    	   This is really getting out of hand, collecting is definately
    getting too expensive and really isn't as much fun anymore. When are
    they going to come out with a super duper premium set with a suggested
    retail price of $10 a pack :^( (of course dealers will start them
    at $20).
