577.0. "1993 Bowman Baseball" by SEND::TANCILL (Well, hello Mr. Soul) Fri Aug 20 1993 00:33

1993 Bowman should be out anytime now, anyone have any opinions?
Topps has been making noise to the dealers that Bowman will be hobby
only (implying no wal-mart/sam's jumbos), as limited as last year,
    etc.

Personally it seems that the year after a supposed scarce year, never
turns out to be as scarce. I site as examples: 1990 Score football,
1991 Leaf baseball, 1992 Stadium club. And it makes perfect sense
if you think about it: sets like 1989 Score football or 92 Bowman
were shunned by dealers, not alot of pre enthusiasm, not many dealers
ordered the stuff. Then went it takes off 6 months later, by the time
next year's issue rolls around every dealer and his brother orders
the stuff so they don't miss out like last year. More orders, more
supply. Couple that with the common sense fact that the company also
sees an opportunity to make more revenue the year after a supposed
scarce year, so of course they print more, most have shareholders
    to answer to.

The only possibility I see here is that Topps maybe doesn't have to
make more money on Bowman in particular and maybe they want to continue
the aura of a "limited, scarce" issue. (I don't even believe that
    as I wrote it ;-)

    anybody else have an opinion?

I am out of baseball now, but I was passing through Augusta last friday
and one of the local dealers there said he wouldn't touch the stuff
this year. He's got crates of last years in the back room.

    I pre-ordered 2 boxes at $42/box. Somehow I have this feeling that
dealers have ordered significantly more Bowman then last hence there
will be an abundance of it. The prices haven't gone up in SCD. Boxes
can still be had for under $45. So I doubt that it will be as limited
    as last year but............

Then again maybe there is alot more of last years Bowman available
then we the poor customers, are led to believe 8*)

Regarding -1 if your local dealer has crates of 1992 Bowman he's
sitting on a gold mine. Packs around here are $12 and rising. Bowman
1992 Hockey packs are $19.95. If he meant P..ast years (not last), he's
got a problem...... Be glad to take 1992 Bowman off his hands for
    what he paid ;*)

Jeff's right. That always happens when a product is "scarce" one year.
People will buy it the next year with the perception it'll be scarce
again and the companies know this so they'll print more.

The first three years of Bowman are easy to find cheap. This is
probably what that dealer has in the back.

I saw packs this sunday for $3 each! Others have seen them for
$2-$2.50. They were $3 at a bedford, nh show because only 2 dealers had
them I guess. It seems they are plentiful on the west coast but just
starting to show up here in new england. The foils have a
multi-colored boarder this year, kind of snazzier then last year's
gold boardered foils. The cards themselves feel a little like
collector's choice football, on the thin side and almost plastic
like, white boarders again. Backs of older players have a team by
team breakdown of how the player hit against each team. I like them
on first impression better than last year.

BTW, every dealer is speaking the same party line that Topps fed them:
"Production is the same as 92 Bowman". That maybe true, but if so it
proves my opinion that 92 Bowman baseball is rather plentiful, I see
it around quite a bit, jumbo packs are constantly popping up for sale
at ridiculous prices on Internet. If there is so little of this stuff
were are all these people getting packs?

I do believe there is very little (by comparison) Bowman football and
even less Bowman hockey, you just don't see them around or being
offered for sale much, but the Baseball, I don't believe it's all
that scarce. BG should be a good barometer, see how much 92 & 93
Bowman baseball you see vs. 92 football or hockey.

Yep, Bowman 93 is everywhere I've been. Many of the stores didn't
get 92 Bowman so how is it they got 93 Bowman so cheap? Center Sports
in Billerica had them at $48/box Saturday ($2/pack too). Maybe there
is alot of 92 Bowman as Jeff said.

I opened two boxes last night (pre-order at 32$ a box). Nowhere near
a set since they only give you 24 packs a box now. I think it's a
nicer set than last year. Does anyone know how many foil cards are
in the set ? I got about 36 different out of the 48.

    John,
Not sure on the total number of foils, I'll ask around. Send me a
wantlist though, cause I bought about 10 packs and have no intention
of trying to put a set together, so you're welcome to whatever you
    need.

Interesting that some of the "clubs" are selling Bowman. I thought it
was supposed to be a hobby exclusive.

Sam's (Wal-Mart) got jumbos but did any "clubs" get regular wax?
That was supposed to be hobby only.
