575.0. "1963 Fleer Football card question" by NETMGR::KOPEC (West Coast Yaz) Tue Aug 17 1993 05:13

I am in the process of cataloging all of my 1959-66 sports cards. I
had always delayed going through my football cards because baseball was
always my main sport and I knew most of the players of that era.

However, in unearthing my 1963 Fleer football set, I came across a
couple of inexplicably priced cards: actually 2 in particular. Becketts
says that Charles Long and Bob Dougherty are each worth $250 at the
high end. For the life of me, I can't imagine why these 2 guys' cards
are worth so much. Both are single print (SP) cards and Long was a
rookie (RC), but there are numerous other SP/RC cards in other years
from the same era by other manufacturers which are worth $10 and less!

So... is it the fact that this particular set's RC/SP are just worth 25
times as much as other comparable years (but why?),
    			or
Are these guys now famous (I've never heard of them). Are they now...
Movie stars? Politicians? Is one of them the Boston Strangler? Other?

    						Thx, Stan

    Are they error cards?
Is there a local shop that you can get an opinion from?

They weren't listed as error cards in Becketts.
I asked at 1 local shop and the guy didn't know. Maybe the next show
    I attend, someone will know.

These guys aren't famous or anything, the prices are based on
perceived scarcity. Not just any old SP, but really, really SP.

My Sports Americana Football Card Price Guide (what I call
"the fat Beckett"), has some details:

"Card numbers 6 and 64 are more difficult to obtain than other cards
in the set; their shirtage is believed to be attributable to their
possible replacement on the printing sheet by the unnumbered
    checklist."

Another tidbit you might find of interest:

"Cards with numbers divisible by 4 can be found with or without a
red stripe at the bottom of the card back; it is thought that those
without the red stripe are in lesser supply."
