554.0. "Need Advice on Possible Unscrupulous Dealer" by TOOK::SOKOL () Thu Apr 15 1993 16:58

Moderator, you can move this note to a more apropriate place if needed,
i just want to get as much opinions as i can since i never had such
    	experience before.

I want to know what i should do in my situation. This is what happened.

The other day i went to a card show in Lynn, MA . There was a guy
selling 1993 UD hockey high boxes (he had 2 on top of each other) with
Gordie Howe selects in it. He said he wants $28 for a box. After a
short negotiation i got it for $25. He pulled the bottom box and gave
it to me. It didn't have a plastic wrapper. When i asked him why it
didn't he said he took it off by mistake and all the packs are in.
(i looked into and all packs were there).
I came home and opened all packs. I didn't get even one select card,
got 1 holo and 1 gordie heroes card.

On my opinion, he opened a few boxes, got all select cards and the rest
of packs put into this box. (wax wrappers were ok or seemed to be ok).

What do you think i should do? I'm pretty sure he will be there next
show (it's a new place i visited for the first time and can't tell if
he is there all the time).

    \thx for all replys, alex.

I would say as with the UD high basketball, unscrupulous dealers are
"searching" packs by sliding the contents and repacking boxes with
packs thought not to have a UV coated insert in them. Track this guy
down if you can and accuse him in loud voice of searching the packs and
demand your $25 back. Bring the opened packs from your box back and
hand them this "person", he will most likely give you your money back
to keep you quiet. If he doesn't, elevate your complaint and tell
the dealer you're going to do this. Talk to the show promoter and then
the Better Business Bureau if you have to. CHances are all you'll
need to do is threaten to elavate your complaint and you will get
    your money back.

Never buy a unwrapped box that's supposed to have shrink wrap. Be
careful of prices on packs/boxes that are far below the current
average price for the product. Find some dealers you trust and give
them your business, even if it means sacrificing a few dollars
    here or there.

good luck and let us know what happens if you pursue this.

Thanks, Jeff, I will do that and post an update. The next show there
will be on April 26. Anyway, i guess i got a lesson to be carefull when
you see the deal too good.

Well, i took all the cards from that box to that show. He was there.
When i stated my matter to him he looked quite surprized (or he is
an excellent actor and should be in hollywood). now he says that he
opened both boxes he had right before the show since he planned to
sell everything. when i asked how come i didn't get any special
inserts in that box he said that it happened to him once or twice with
ud baseball boxes and i got extreamly unlucky. He also said that with
the packs like ud there is no way you can sort the box out and get all
packs with inserts out of the box (in the opposite to wax packs which
can be openned and closed quite easily).

Well, what can i do, beat the guy? If he is telling the truth, i
really got unlucky, if not i got my lesson of bying an unwrapped
box. I can't see to pursue this matter any further.

    thanks jeff for your input.

Find out if the guy is in the Greater Boston Sports Collectors
Club and give me a call. Another way to check is to see if the
guy has stacks of insert cards in his cases.
I assume that every pack is searched that isn't factory sealed.
