527.0. "Your most expensive card ..." by BALZAC::SIE () Fri Jan 15 1993 08:18

By reading this conference, I noticed that we have some serious card
collectors around ...

How about everybody sharing with us our most precious ( and expensive )
card that you have in your collection. Also, it would be interesting
for all of us to know how you got that card, how much you paid it and
what's it's current value ( Beckett price ).

I'll start the ball rolling ...

	- My most expensive card is a mint 1972 O-PEE-CHEE Marcel Dionne card
( rookie for the Detroit Red-Wings).

	- I found it, as well as all of my old card collection in my parents
basement a couple of years ago.

	- I guess I bought the card myself about 20 years ago when I as just
a young lad collecting and exchanging cards with my friends.
( I still remember going thru a new pack of cards during class recess
and chanting the famous young card collectors chant : got em, got em,
need em, got em ... )

	- Back then a pack of O-PEE-CHEE hockey cards was worth about 10
cents. If I remember right, we had 8 cards in a pack ( plus a
stick of gum ) so each card was worth a touch more then 1 penny.
Last time I looked in the Becket price guide, that same card was
	worth about $125.

Who's next ... ?

I don't know, I'd have to check the latest guides. I have
Robin Yount and George Brett Rookies, along with a Walter
Payton Rookie... Haven't looked up the older cards in a while.
Something else may have gone past them.

527.2"my" most expensive cards...POLAR::FERGUSONRPROFESSORIFri Jan 15 1993 15:5437

Well......

#1.

"my" most expensive card is a 1971 OPC CFL RC of Joe Thiesman. Picked it up for
a fellow noter. Based upon a misprint in a price guide I got it for 75 cents
rather than the $75.00 it was really worth.

Sent it down to the guy....

Got into CFL cards myself about a month later and this created the need for the
same card. At that point, myself and everyone else became aware of the actual
book value.

Embarrassed to admit I tried to scam the card back from the guy I bought it for.
Eventually realized I was about to throw away a longstanding noter-freindship
over a "damned piece of cardboard" and pulled back (and apoligized)Still feel
bad about what i tried to do.

(Now have my own copy of it, unfortunately it has crystallized scotch tape
residue along the top and bottom that I have so far been unable to remove.)

#2.

My most expensive card (from a sentimental perspective) is my MINT 1985 Topps
U.S.F.L. Doug Flutie RC which I later got autographed through his Dad.

I have over 150 auto'd CFL football cards and this one, by far, ranks as my
most valuable card. THE GUY IS FANTASTIC !!!

 (Jees, I do run on...)

    My most expensive cards are.

    	1. Nolan Ryan Rookie in Mint condition.
Not sure what I paid. It was in a box of cards that I bought
from a guy at works brother in law. I bought the box in 1986 and it
had approx. 450 cards from the 60's. Most were in fair shape. Got a
couple of Yaz,Seaver,Clemente's and 2 Reggie Jackson Rookies in Mint
condition. 8*)) I paid 225.00 for the lot. Not sure what the price
of the Nolan was at the time, but the Jacksons were 60.00. Back then
it was pretty easy to find cards at yard sales and in people at works
attics. I used to offer approx. 50% of book to people getting rid of
cards. I always told them to get a price from a shop before they sold
to me. Nobody ever came back and had an offer over 25-30% from a shop.
    I sure am glad 8*)).

A 1956 Topps Willie Mays that is *mint mint mint*

I traded a 1965 Mickey Mantle (EX-MNT) in exchange for the Mays and a
1963 Frank Robinson that was also mint.

I paid $50.00 for the Mantle many years ago; Since the trade I think
the Mantle has gone up cvonsiderably. I don't care too much; Mantle
    never meant much to me.

527.6It Isn't Just $$$ That CountQETOO::HAYESSun Jan 17 1993 20:5514
I have the 1992 Cal Ripken Signature card from Donruss. it was part of
a trade stamps for cards I made with a dealer. Not sure of the value
    but I like Ripken.

My most memorable memorabillia is tickets stubs from Nolan Ryans 6th
    and 7th No-Hitter. I also have a whole ticket from the 7th. $$$ isn't
the important thing for me. I was at BOTH of them. Yep, traveled for
DEC and was in Oakland for #6. May 1st a year later we were in Texas
for a meeting and 8 of us wanted to see him pitch. Only 7 showed up.
I had bought the tickets on my Visa so I had the 8th ticket. I kept it.
Many have said why go to a game with me... no one ever gets a hit!

    Good topic, Thanks, Steve
527.771-72 OrrSMAUG::FLOWERSIBM Interconnect Eng.Mon Jan 18 1993 10:5812
I'm not sure if it's my most expensive card (but probably close) - but it is
the card I've paid the most for. Which also means my favorite (so far :-).

1971-72 Topps Bobby Orr in perfect shape. Actually I have most of the Bruins
from that set (Espo, Bucyk, Cheevers, Sanderson, Cashman, etc), but the Orr
card is the only one in mint condition and the only one I paid more than a few
bucks for. It cost me $35 - which was about book at the time...

These old Bruins cards (plus some late '60s Bruins cards) are my favorite. And
the only ones I'd ever consider paying any real money for.

Dan - an obvious Bruins fan

527.11Rich Gedman Card.POWDML::GASPARONITue Feb 02 1993 17:205
My most expensive card is my Rich Gedman rookie card, I got it from
the Saint in his annual Baseball contest. I'm so proud of that card,
mostly because I won it in a contest, the only thing I have ever won,
and I won it for coming in last in his contest, I guess John called it
    the Boobie Prize.

I'm not a very dedicated collector of cards but I try to complete
1 hockey set a year. and pick up some super star cards each year
    from each sport.

What got me going was about 3 years ago I got married and in packing to
move I came across a ton of my old hockey cards, all 69-73 cards.
At that time I was about 9-10 so perfect age for buying these things.

I have 9 70-71 Bobby Orr cards! about 7 Espo cards various others
    6 Marcel Dionne's, Dryden's and a 70 Bobby Hull that unfortunately I put
a bb blast right through his forehead! I take it he scored a back breaker
goal back then against the B's and I let him know how I felt 8*)
