520.0. "1993 Upper Deck Baseball" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Mon Dec 28 1992 20:13

This note is for the 1993 Upper Deck Baseball cards. Series I will include
420 Cards. There will be a 29 card "Star Rookie Subset" including one check-
list and 28 players (one from each team) who are eligible as "Rookie of the
Year" for each of the teams. These cards will be full bleed photos. There
will also be a 15 card "Teammates" subset including a checklist and 14 cards
featuring top teammates from each of the American League clubs. This subset
is kind of like the old Topps multi-player cards and the Fleer Superstar
Specials (ie. "Boston Cy Sox" feature Clemens and Viola).

Another subset is a 10 player "Community Heroes" subset (there is also a
checklist). This subset features players who excel on and the off the field.

As far as the inserts go:

SP5 - 3,000 Hit Commerative Card (George Brett and Robin Yount)

Baseball Heroes - Willie Mays

Triple Crown Contenders - 10 Cards (Bonds, Canseco, Clark, Griffey Jr.,
McGriff, Puckett, Ripken Jr., Sheffield, Thomas and
Walker) - Nice looking set ...

Walter Iooss Collection - 26 Cards Gold Foiled stamped cards featuring the
works of sports photographer Walter Iooss Jr.

Homerun Heroes - 28 Cards (same as last year's subset) one per jumbo pack.

Then and Now Holograms - 9 Card insert set featuring top stars in their rookie
			 year and today.

They looked like nice cars, but dealers wanted $2/pack for them at a

Upperdeck is too insert crazy for me and I'm an insertaholic...

I went to a small show this weekend. One dealer wanted 55$ a box. His
justification was that the first shipments of Upper Deck always has
more insert cards. He said the boxes were flying off the tables at
    the Mantle show at 60-70$.

It appeared to me that only 2 or 3 dealers at the Vince's New England
Card Show at BC High on friday evening had UD baseball. They were
asking $2 and $60/box. I didn't see anyone buy even a pack in the 2-3
hours I was there. Most people have learned by now that buying right
when a product first comes out means paying way too much for that
product. Especially the case with any UD product. A few dealers had
broken down some boxes, saw the cards (uv caoted), saw the heroes, saw
the SP, none of it screamed "got to have these now!". Personally I'm
still doing alot of football, basketball and a little hockey, I doubt
I'll even buy anybody's 93 baseball, but certainly not at inflated
    prices.

much less product this year". Right, a couple cases maybe ...

I couldn't stand the pressure!! I bought a box at the Tuff Stuff
Hank Aaron show in Richmond,Va this weekend. Got it for 48.00. I
had 2 packs that had the SP5 cards stuck together so I got 4. I also
got 2 Mays Heroes, 1 Triple Crown,1 Holo (nice design). They were
also selling the 93 Topps Jumbo boxes (5 gold per pack) for 35.00.
I had already run out of $$ by that time 8*(.

On Sunday I picked up a box and 6 various Ted Williams Hero cards for
$38.00 at a show in Newton. The box contained 7 Willie Mays Hero cards,
3 triple Crown contenders and 1 Boggs Holo. There was no Rookie Emblem
cards in the box from Numbers 1-14 and one of each from 15-30. I have
sorted the cards up to #200 so far and there were no cards numbered
from #139-160 but recieved 59 cards numbered from 161-179.
They also list on the pack the odds of getting the insert cards.
Mays was 1 card per 9 packs and the Contenders was 1 in 15. Don't
    recall the others. Mark

    John,
Did you purposely leave out how much you paid for the box? You can
admit it in front of your friends, go ahead...

Sounds like it was a good box, what do you think of the cards in
terms of appearance, quality, fronts/backs, etc., is it the nicest thing
UD has done? Several people have been professing to me that they like
this card the most of any UD so far, however, I really liked both this
year's football and basketball, how does the baseball compare in your
    opinion?

The box was 36$. The cards are UV coated, design is nothing to write
home about, but then just about all the designs this year are rather
simple. The backs are similar to the Donruss backs. Quality wise it's
probably the nicest thing Upper Deck has done. I only separated the
cards into one hundreds so I haven't sorted them yet since I'll prob-
ably buy some more anyway, but the stacks seemed even as opposed to
past years when your stack of 100-199 was three times as high as your
    stack of 200-299.

I like the subsets a lot and I was able to get a full checklist sub-
set, a full Community Heroes subset, 11 of the 13 Teammates subset
and 26 of 29 Star Rookies subset. The subsets are full bleed photos
like the basketball draft picks. The Teammates subset is really nice
and go back to the old Topps days of "Bronx Bombers", "Sox Sluggers"
etc. Series II will probably have a Teammates subset for the NL.

As far as the inserts go, the Then and Now hologram I pulled was one
I needed and four of the five Triple Crown Contenders were ones I
also needed. The double I got was another Frank Thomas which is good
trade bait. I finished the Mays Heroes set.

It seems like the Mays cards will be plentiful, the same for the SP5
cards if my box is any indication (although two were stuck together
in the same pack). It seems like the Then and Now holograms are hard-
er to get than the Triple Crown Contenders, but that doesn't mean
    anything at this time.

Overall a very nice set and so far the best of the baseball issues.
Upper Deck has improved their card and kept the price the same. It
seems like it'll be a better bargain than Stadium Club and Ultra con-
sidering prices for those will be 60-80 cents higher per pack and I
don't see how their quality / contents can be much better. Of course
inserts a lot of times drive these products and the main product it-
self is left by the side. Last year's Ultra set was definitely worth
getting even if you didn't want the inserts because they did a very
nice job on it. This year's Upper Deck is the same. Even if you don't
do the inserts, the main set is worth picking up because the subsets
and the set itself are just as nice as the inserts.

Wow. Bought three packs on the way home friday and I was hooked.
Very nice job, a total quality card, love the clean white boarders,
UV coating, full bleed first 50+, but the thing I love the most
is the beautiful color photog. After a football season of some
disappointment photo wise (ultra), these pictures and the colors
are just real nice. Bought a box for $33, ripped it, got 5 Mays,
1 SP5 (no sticktogether action for me ;-(, 3 triple crown and 1
then and holo. Haven't sorted them completely but my stacks were
not all that even. Was so impressed bought another on saturday at
the Nashua flea market for $30, only 2 triple crowns and 1 holo,
but got a cover Mays, SP5 and few Mays singles. Another guy a spoke
with got 4 0r 5 holo's per box compared to my 1, so it looks like
the inserts will vary widely box to box.

I have to agree this is the nicest thing UD has done, period. Wish
they would cool it on all the inserts in different packaging (hobby
vs. retail wax, etc.), but as for the cards themselves I second the
    'Five sticks on the Gum-o-meter'.

Series II will include a special 5th Anniversary 15 card insert set
featuring some of the top cards Upper Deck has made over the past
5 years, including the 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. The cards have black
borders, except for one of the Reggie Heroes cards which has a gold
    border.

Well, my streak came to an end. Bought a box over the weekend in
Poughkeepsie, and did ok. Bought a couple of Jimmy Jacksons at
$3/card. Got a Bird Header, 3 heroes for trade, and did pretty well
    for the rookie prospects...

Then I left them on the front seat of the car, with the moonroof
cracked. Oh well, I guess those plastic cases aren't water tight...
    sigh...

Anyone seen Jordan and Wilkins dunk championship error cards. I guess
they mixed up the stamp on the front. Anyone know what they're worth?

Are they boxes still above $50/box at shows?

I bought 3 packs of the "Season highlights" boxes and got a
Brett - 3000 hits highlight. What is this series going for?

Also, any sign of the Series 2's at BJ's?

Haven't been to a show for awhile Walt, but I believe they are going
for $30-$35, typical UD product, cost is around $27/box to dealers.

I haven't seen any at BJs, I imagine it will still be a few weeks
before the retail boxes come in, the hobby boxes out now have the
retrospective insert set, reprints of some of UD's more notable
cards of the past five years (Griffey jr RC from 89, Ryan football,
reggie hero, on up to silly ones like Liistach from series 1 1993)

I can get you a box for $32 if you can't find one any cheaper.

I brought 8 packs from a dealer at the Derry NH flea market a
couple of weekends ago,so the price Jeff mentioned should be
    the going price...$30-$35 a box.
The dealer did say that the series had about 5 sub sets in it
so it may depend on how bad people want the sub sets that sets
the price in the near future.
I forgot to mention that i paid a dollar a pack for the packs
that i picked up. I don't recall all of the sub set special
card names, but the one that stands out the most to me is the golden
moments set. Also there seem to be at least three of these sub set/
special cards per pack, and that's what the dealer told me he has
    seen too.

    > them?

I got mine from John's SportsCards in tyngsboro, 4 Pondview Place,
it's across the street from Skate 3, the big ice rink off route 3
in tyngsboro, just into mass., 1/2 mile down from Pheasant Lane
mall in nashua, nh. John is a very nice and reasonable person/dealer.
He almost always will cut you a good deal, particularly if you
frequent his shop (catering to repeat customers, imagine that, what
a retail concept!). John is your old fashioned type dealer who
realizes he is running a retail business that depends upon satisfied
    customers to survive long term.

Check out his store if you're in the area, and for the $32/box of UD II
baseball, mention Digital and tell him Jeff sent you (he'll probably
then charge you $35 or more ;-). I'm assuming the $32 deal won't last
forever, but will last as long as he has a reasonable quantity of boxes
    left from his direct shipment.

Joe, if you can't make it there, maybe I can pick them up for you and
we could arrange to meet, although you'll still have to come at least
part this way to pick them up. Send me some mail if you want me to
    get them for you.
