I thought he was in the Classic Basketball set also. Packs of those and
the four sport seem to be plentiful - around .75 cents usually. I don't
buy Classic personally, except for the checklists, because I don't
agree with their policy of signing players to exclusive contracts. If
Classic signed Shaq for a million dollar contract, think of all the
cards they need to print to get their money back. I've seen the basket-
ball draft pick sets for 10$ so his card can't be worth much more than
    that.

If this helps you any Upper Deck has a card that you can get in
packs that you can send in after the first off the year and they will
send you back a Shaq card. These cards are selling for adout $8.00

His first card appeared in Classic Draft Pick Football as a promo.
Then another promo was included in Classic Draft Pick Hockey.
He has two cards in Classic Draft Pick Basketball. Card #1 and an LP.
He has six cards in Classic 4 Sport Card1, Wooden award winner,3 LPs
    and an autograph card.
John is slightly mistaken in his assumptions:
1-all of the classic material is numbered (one of XXX) along with their
cases. SOOOOOOOOOOO if you pay to much shame on you not on
      them.
2-I'll take all of the Draft Pick basketball that I can get at
.75/pack. The lowest I've seen in the past two weeks 2.00/pack.

His classic draft pick autograph is selling for 1000.00

    Re: .3

    You mean numbered like:

    Numbered ###,### of 500,000 cases
    Numbered ###,### of 200,000 sets

Just because something is numbered doesn't make it scarce. Also if I
remember correctly some company was reissuing numbers by "mistake".

No I mean one of 10,000 cases (thats 120,000 boxes). Just for
fun do you know if that is more or less than Topps printed in 1953?

    It's less !!!!!!!!!!!!
There are more 1953 Mantles than 1992 Shaque !!!!!!!

514.6nice try... butMSDOA::PARKERJFri Dec 18 1992 17:2311
    Mike,

I very seriously doubt there are more 53 mantles than Classic
Shaquiles. Classic also produced factory sets and I also read
somewhere that there are about 250,000 availble in wax alone. There is
plenty of Shaq to be had which doesn't mean it won't go up. I am sure
it will, he is very hot. Most of the 53 Topps product ended up in
either the trash, so kids bicycle spokes, flipped against the wall, or
    well you get the picture.

Just a guess, but I think that long term, the UpperDeck 1A card
will be more valuable than the classic #1. The inserts are harder to
get, so they will be more valuable, but they are tuff to get (unless
you want to pay big bucks.) If you're going to buy an insert, I would
reccomend the Hoops send away card over the Classic LP's.

My reasoning is the Pro cards are considered "rookie" cards, the
draft pick cards are pre-rookie cards.

514.8Mantle Schmantle57454::KELLYFri Dec 18 1992 18:2711
the 53 Mantle was a double print and if you do the math from there
production runs + there vendor cases that went into arcade machines
its closer than most mantle collectors would like to know.
Classic does number it's cases, and its gadget cards, and its
autographs and publishes the total amount that will be manufactured.
No one else does. If you consider this business model against
what Topps and Donruss does I find it easy to think that Classic
is at least making an attempt.
More on mantle. One wax box of 53's low numbers there were only
83 different cards 36 pack 5 cards each. Do the math.

What was the production run in 1953 ? How much was dumped in the ocean
    like 1952 Topps Hi #'s ?

I guess what you're saying is that the Shaq card is much scarcer and
more valuable than a '53 Mantle. Sounds like a selling job on Home
    Shopping Club.

Thanks for all the input, at least now I have a starting point. I
needed more info cause I want to buy a few Shaq cards. It sounds
like Mike has a point on how many 53 Mantles were produced. How
ever How many are actually still out there in mint shape. I
do not think many Shaq cards will be thrown away in the garbage,
ocean, tossed against walls etc. If anyone heres of good buys
on Shaq cards, or anyone is buying quanity for a discount let me
know maybe we can all save some $$$, He is the real Mcoy.

Not counting factory sets, jumbo packs etc. there'll be approximately
630,000 Shaq cards in the four sport wax boxes. This is based on 40,000
    12 box wax cases.

    John,

For those of us that are still relatively new to this hobby, could you
say more about the "Star Company releasing Shaq sets (Nova, Platinum,
    etc.)"

514.14Star SetsFUTURE::JST_ONGEJohn St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715Wed Dec 23 1992 09:1211
Star Company (out of Philadelphia I believe) is a big maker of
individual player sets. They also made basketball sets back in the
mid 80's before Fleer came on board. These basketball sets fetch a
pretty good price now. Anyway, they make sets of individual players
and give the sets the names based on their production run such as
Nova for a print run of 500, Platinum for a print run of 750 etc.

If you collect individual players, these are probably nice sets to
pick up. The sets themselves are small sets 10-25 cards.

    John,

Thanks for the info on Star!

Do you have any more info on when Star will be doing the Shaq set? Do
you typically find these sets at shows or do local dealers carry them
    as well?

What does one of these sets MSLP go for?

    Regards,
    Denny

I see them advertised in SCD a lot. Minnesota Connection (also a
Customer Service Award Winner) 612-892-0406 was advertising them.
No prices listed - you have to call so I'm sure they're not cheap.

514.18Info on Star Sets - WOW!!!CARTUN::PAVLOCKTue Dec 29 1992 22:2026

I called Baseball Card Kingdom in N.J. today.

Wow, you guys didn't warn me how expensive these Star cards are!!

Star is producing 4 - 10 player, 9 cards each player sets. The Nova
and Stellar sets are going for $375/set. The Platinum and Court King
    sets are going for $299.95/set.

Right now Star has signed 8 players, including Shaq. The guy at
Baseball Card Kingdom (BCK) said they would probably start printing some
of the players soon and sending out the 9 card sets. When they sign the
last 2 players, or they may just do 2 - 9 card Shaq sets they'll send
    out the rest.

The guy at BCK said as they got them they would send them out.

Now tell me, all you old experienced card collectors, as these really
    worth $300+??

    Regards,
    Denny

514.19common sets will be available as wellDDIF::MCEVOYWed Dec 30 1992 11:4920
Star will also produce "off the shelf" sets of each player they
produce. These sets are produced in much greater volume than the
nova or platinum releases, so they're easier to come by.

You can usually get these for about 10$ or so, (e.g. Dee Brown or
Tim Hardaway sets), but the Shaq sets will surely be hyped to
25$ and up, similar to the David Robinson sets a couple years ago.

Personally, I think you'd have to be pretty wealthy to be able to
buy the nova type sets. I think the appeal is to a pretty small
subset of the collecting world. Also, these sets are not listed in
    Becketts.

If you're in to Shaq, I'd reccomend buying one of the common star sets.
Also, don't be surprised if they do more than one shaq set like they
did for Derek Coleman and David Robinson last year.

514.20Shaquille O'Neal CardsGRANMA::BRUMBOLDSat Mar 20 1993 17:117
In October, my son bought a few packs of Classic 92-93 Hockey cards.
To his surprise, one of the packs contained a Shaquille O'Neal Classic
Four-Sport Basketball Preview Card. When he looked it up in the Future
Stars Beckett it listed as $36. It has gone up steadily each month,
and as of February's Beckett, the card listed at $100! That's a good
investment for a $1 pack of cards.

514.22Drake's Fleer ShaqFUTURE::JST_ONGEJohn St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715Tue Jun 01 1993 21:389
My wife picked up a box of Drake's Coffee Cakes. Inside were 4 1993
Fleer Basketball Cards. I thought they were just cards from the
regular set, but it turns out it's only a 54 card set with 2 players
from each team. Shaq is one of the Orlando players. Unless dealers
are able to pick these up cheap from Fleer or Drake's, this could be
a tough set to put together. I'm not sure if Drake's products are
only found in the Northeast either.

I'm just courious since I never saw them.
