504.0. "Help!!" by SAHQ::QUALE (I'D RATHER BE FISHIN) Thu Nov 12 1992 16:28

I need some help in deciding where to go with my collection.
Currently I am missing about 200 cards from '69 Topps (mostly commons).
    I have approx. 300 - 400 '70 Topps (~100 doubles). the Latest Beckett
values all my '69 & '70 cards at about $6,000.00. I also have small
quantities of '64,'66,'67,'68,'71 cards valued at ~$700.00. My dilema
is this.. do I Sell/trade the small cards valued at $700 to complete the
'69 set or do I try taking these cards as well as the '70 Topps and
sell/trade for a complete set like '84 Donruss or maybe something even
older, or do I keep all of the cards as they are now. Is trying to
complete the '69 set the best thing to do? Obviously I am looking at
this from an investment stand point. Although there are certain cards
my son would never let go of (R. Jackson rookie, Tom Seaver).

Yes, complete the '69 set. It is a beaut, especially if you only need
commons. You may also want to complete one of the insert sets -
probably the deckle inserts, not the mini stickers - as a side project.

Finish the 69 set...Count the hall of famers in that set.
    It's a can't miss investment.

Go for the '69 set and try working on the '70 set. Just this past Saturday I
finally completed my 1968 Topps set at the GBSCC show in Willmington. One
year ago, at the same show, I completed my own 1969 set.

I created a list of the cards I was missing for each year. I was closer to
finishing the '69 set so that's the one I started first. I then wrote down
the high and low price from Becketts and started going to shows. You can
try card stores for basic commons, but they're usually way overpriced for
the stars. I got most of my remaining stars (Joe Morgan, Stargell, and minor
stars like Flood, Santo) at shows for close to the Becketts low. You have got
to be willing to bargain or buy a group at a time. Also, don't pay top prices
for poor quality unless it's something you can't afford (like a Ryan Rookie)
These cards are still out there and they're SO much better than any of the new
stuff.

If you're thinking of getting rid of any of them, just give them to me! :-)

Let me know if you need any other hints.

Dan
