491.0. "Framing Autographed 3 x 5 cards..." by SALISH::TUTAK_PE (Hall of Foam 1992 Inductee) Thu Oct 08 1992 22:17

Does anyone have any information on how to go about mounting (i.e.
framing) autographed 3 x 5 index cards ? I'd like to do matting and
a decent frame, but am a bit of a novice at it, and I'd like to make
sure the card is removable from the frame without damaging it.

I'm continuing a summer project of collecting autographs of ballplayers
    who played for:

    	   a. the old International League Newark Bears (1937-49)

    	   b. the old International League Jersey City Little Giants
    	      (1937-50, 1960-61)

           c. the old Negro Leagues

So far, I've managed to amass about 300 cards amongst all three
catagories (most by mail requests and a few by purchase). A. and B.
interest me because they were local to my hometown area, and C.
because they were such an important part of baseball history.

Anyhow, I'd like to begin framing them. Has anyone tried this ?

    Thanks....

    Peter

I believe there is a dealer who is usually at the GBSCC show in
November at Wilmington MA. who sells autographs and pictures
matted and framed. While some of the stuff is expensive it's
worth checking out. He may be able to help you out offline. You
could also check if there's a photography notes file which may
offer some advice on matting, framing etc.

    Peter,

I did a similar project last year. Here's what you do:

Go to an art supply store; Here in the west we have a chain called
AAron Bros. Art Mart. There you should be able to find pre-cut matts
that have an opening of 3" X 5" (that being a common photograph size).
This will be much easier and cheaper than having them cut to order,
which is another alternative. Cutting them yourself works fine if you
know how and have a matt cutting jig (I do). While you're there, buy
some mounting (or backing) board. Mounting board is a relatively thick
(1/4 or 1/8 inch) white board. What you do is cut the mounting board to
the outside diamater of the matt, mount your 3" X 5" card in the
center, drop your matt on top, and presto, you're there. You can then
drop the whole assembly in a frame if you want to go that far.

As you've said you want the card removable, here's what I suggest for
mounting it on the backing board. Go to CVS or a similar drug store
(some place that sells photograph binders, frames, and such) and get a
box of clear vinyl photograph corners. These little gems are triangle
shaped, and have adhesive on the back. Just stick them where you want
the corners of your card to be on the mounting board, and then slip the
corner of your cards into them. This way the cards are mounted
securely, but you can remove them at liesure without damage.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks to you both for responding...

J.D.--Thanks for the detail. That's exactly what I wanted to do. Now I
can get it right from the first shot.

You can also do this with some velcro. I've been mounting and
framing all my old cards to bring to a show sometime. Once I
have about 100 different frames put together I'll be ready to
go. You could buy some velcro (they have this at most arts/crafts
stores) and stick one part of the velcro on the backer board and
the other part on the card plastic holder. That way you would not
see any corner holders at all and the condition of the corners is
easily seen. This has been working great for me. Now I don't
want to sell my cards after looking at them all matted and framed.
I just finished a 22 x 30 frame that includes an old: Bradshaw, Swann,
Ham RC, Harris RC, Blount RC and Greene card as well as some photos
from each superbowl win (4) matted with yellow, white and black mats
    and backgrounds.
