482.0. "No More Factory Sets for Score" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Thu Oct 01 1992 22:34

I see that Score will no longer issue any more factory sets for any
of their products. The Score representative at the '67 Sox show
mentioned it. I wonder if any of the other companies will do the
same. One thing I wished they'd do is get away from issuing the
cards in series. It wasn't bad back in the old day with Topps, but
with all the companies it gets pretty tough today.

    For baseball alone there was:

    Topps Regular
    Topps Stadium Club 3 Series
    Topps Bowman
    Fleer Regular
    Fleer Ultra 2 Series
    Donruss 2 Series
    Leaf 2 Series
    Leaf Studio
    Score Regular 2 Series
    Score Pinnacle 2 Series
    Score Select (Due in December)

You figure at a conservative 30$ a box you're close to 600$ just in
baseball alone and that's only if you buy one box. Plus, you've
got cello packs, rack packs, jumbo packs, etc. etc. You can sink
some pretty serious cash into this hobby when you think about it.

Add in all the extra stuff you buy for inserts, mini-sets like good
old MooTown Snackers and so forth and I bet it's up around 2K$
easily. Does anyone think this stuff is a good investment ? I can't
see anyone loading up on any of this stuff and making a killing
    down the road.

Hey, I hope they all do away with factory sets. I never liked them - I always
thought they were sort of cheating. :-) Even buying by the box takes a
little fun out of it.

I love collecting (with a sprinkle of investing/etc), but I don't take it
all too seriously, myself. If it ever loses it's fun with me, then I'll stop.
I believe that being in it to "make a killing" would take the fun out of it.

It seems like we no longer see stuff that comes out which is way over
suggested retail prices. I remember when SkyBox basketball first came
out it was close to 80$ if you wanted it. Pacific Trading Football
was close to 40$. Now when something new comes out, the price may be
a little bit higher, but it seems to drop fast and it's not hard to
get. It pays to wait now. People have been burned a lot and there's
only so much BS dealers can feed you. People get tired of hearing the
same old line about scarcity, great investments and so forth. Maybe
the investors are finally getting out. Who knows, maybe prices may
come down a little in the future.

In the "no more" department, did I hear/read that there will be
    no more Bowman cards?

482.5maybe next year for 'no more' BowmanDDIF::TANCILLSooner or later it all gets realFri Oct 02 1992 13:059

Don't think so on the Bowman, maybe next year, but this year's
Bowman baseball is supposed to be coming out soon, stadium like
cards with distribution supposedly limited to only direct dealers.
No retail, no wharehouse/wholesale distribution. I'm sure we'll
    hear how limited they are.
