481.0. "Hoops 1992-93" by GOOEY::MCEVOY () Tue Sep 29 1992 11:53

I opened a box of 1992-93 Hoops Series I last night. As mentioned
in the Brill article, they are real similar to last years.

Nice stock, white borders, college and pro stats on the back. The
Jordan card is especially nice. Some of the subsets include a series
of cards highlighting magic's career; league leaders; team cards
(these are really ugly); all stars; stay-in-school; Tournament of
    America cards, etc.

I'm not sure how close I am to a set, have yet to sort them. But I
think I'm close. There's a Laettner card in the Tournament of America's
subset which surprised me since he hasn't signed with the Wolves yet.
I wonder if Hoops signed a separate deal with him?

There a a few insert cards, I got a Magic card and a Ewing card.
They are pretty nice, Glittery writing on the side. The magic card
has a picture of him as a rookie on one side, and retiring on the other
side (holding up his jersey). The Ewing card describes his best game
as a pro, a playoff victory over the boston team. The insert card that
I didn't get is the draft pick card that you can send back to Hoops
to get a set of draft pick cards after the first of the year. This
card is only available in one in every ten boxes, so it might be tough
to find. I'm not sure how scarse the Magic and Ewing cards are (anyone
know?) In previous years, Hoops hasn't done much with inserts, last
year they had the centenial card in series I, and the USA card in
series II. This year, they're following the rest of the market with
more inserts, almost have to have them to compete these days.

There's also the USA Basketball insert card too, right? Supposed
to be the first card picturing all 12 players in their uniforms.

Did you get one of these?

Nope, I didn't get the USA basketball card either, I should get a
    refund on that box!

I purchased two boxes and got a total of 1 Ewing, 3 magic inserts
and late last week went to a store in Worcester and brought the last two
packs in the box for $1 ea and one of them had the Draft exchange card
in it. Made my week it was listed in Beckett for $55 and going up.
Mailed it in and I'll let you know how they look when I get them in.
