428.0. "1953 Topps Archives Baseball " by PIPPER::FIRMANI () Wed May 06 1992 14:50

I was wondering how much the 53 TOPPS ARCHIVES set is selling for, and
what some of your opinions are for this set.

    Any info would be appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Mike

Sports Card Trader (April) has it listed at $100. I paid $75 for one a
couple months ago. It's one of those sets, (like Classic) that I like
    even if some 'experts' don't.

     Mike,

I think you mean the reproductions of the 1953 Topps, right?
Those Archive Topps are selling for 10% of the listed Beckett
price, this is the last time I seen.

I think Hudmar's in Marlboro, Mass and Great American BB Cards in W.
Concord, Mass has sets. Last time I talked to them, they were around
    $100 + or -.

I really like my set. Brings back a lot of memories on the players
from my youth. Since I can't afford an original 1953 set, this is the
    next best thing.

    Regards,
    Denny

I believe .3 (.2?) is incorrect. Dealers are pricing the cards at
1%, not 10% of the original 1953 cards.

    For example, Mantle (HI Beckett's) is $2,750 -- 10% would be $275,
    whereas 1% would be $27.50

This was the original pricing format the dealers used, but prices
    have dropped.

I regularly see sets for $60-65, ditto boxes, at shows. With very
little movement (in terms of sales).

18,000 cases has turned out to be plenty to satisfy current demand.
I think the initial push was artificially created by the fact that
the cards were only available through hobby dealers. You couldn't
go to the local mom and pop and pick some up.

The gotta have 'ems ran out and paid the initial high prices, and
now the prices are slowly settling down to a realistic level.

The market just isn't all that strong for reprint sets. A lot of
people pooh-pooh the notion of owning a reprint. There aren't any
"rookie" cards, there's very little investment potential, blah blah
    blah ad nauseum.

I love 'em (reprint sets), although I'm very tepid towards this set.
Hope Topps does better with the next one.

I liked the set also and thought they did a nice job - except for
those "cards that never were". Topps took the easy way out using
pictures instead of paintings. I thought this took something away
    from the set.

Sorry i do believe you are right on the 1% value of the Beckett
price, not 10%. I think the Mantle and the Mays cards are the only
cards that have $$$ value in the set. But I gotta say they are good
looking reproductions vs. the Conlons, what do you think??

    Re: .7

Well the Conlons can be considered an original set, not a reproduction
which is what the '53 Topps Archives are. Actually, the other Conlon
set (I believe it's a Conlon set) the Smithsonian whatever was a nicer
looking set than the latest Conlon set.

    John,

I'm very interested in "re-pro type sets". Could you say a little more
about the Conlon "Smithsonian" set? Is it available now, Or when was
it available. Other info about the set that you know.

I have the opportunity to buy the 1933 Goudey reprint set. It was
offered to me for $20, but after finding out that it is missing 2 cards
(#32 and #189) he offered it to me for $15. Is this a good price for
    this set?
Any information on this set, the price, or the cards that are missing
    would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

This year's Bazooka cards are not the standard "rookie" or "superstar"
cards they normally insert into the boxes of their gum.

This year, they are inserting "1953 Topps Archive Quadri-Cards".
WTH is a Quadri-Card you ask. I'll tell you. It's a standard sized
baseball card, with four mini '53 Archive cards re-produced on the
one card (similar to the Aaron, Rose, and Ryan tributes that Topps
    has done in past years).

The card stock is nice baseball card stock (not the credit card
stock). There are 22 cards in the set. You get one card / box
of gum (the box running around .79-.99 in most places).

I have a chance to order some complete sets of these. The price
for one is kind of high ($14.95), but the price lowers the more
    sets you order.

So I'm trying once again to do a "bulk" order. Anyone who might be
interested in one or more of these sets -- let me know -- send me
mail at CERBUS::KARLSON. The prices work out to (price per set
if we order this many sets) ...

    	1 set	...	$14.95
    	5 sets	...	~$12.00
    	10 sets	...	~$10.00
    	25+ sets...	~$9.00
