420.0. "(Score) Pinnacle Baseball (1992)" by PHAROS::MATOS () Fri Apr 10 1992 20:30

Just when you think we had enough I heard that SCORE is
putting out its own Premium set, PINNACLE BASEBALL CARDS.
From what I heard it's coming in two series, and the set is about
    330 cards for series one.

Here in Albq. the Pinnacle football is very popular, the bb will
be very hot I'm sure. Any info on price , packaging, or availability?

Yes, I've heard that also. Hopefully in one box you'll get close to
set, but the hockey and football sets were tough completing. There's
more cards in the baseball boxes though - 576 per box.

The boxes out now say right on them "Series 1". One dealer at a show
I went to sunday said the collation was pretty good on the 4 boxes he
broke down. He like the collation, commenting that the baseball and
hockey was pretty good, but the football collation was lousy. Of
course the collation probably varies alot from box to box.

Score's intention is definitely to release 2 series, and I wouldn't
be surprised if there was an update set. But I'm a cynic. They
    announced it as 2 series.

Saw these last weekend at a show for $41-45/box, but two shows since
have seen prices more like $50-60 (majority being $55-60).

Retail stores have already recieved some. How do I know? I was at
Toys R Us recently, and I found a box in the back of the store,
among some other things -- all the packages had been ripped open.

(They wouldn't give me the box, or sell it to me for a discounted
     price either).

I imagine they were looking for particular cards, maybe even the
    team Pinnacle cards.

Speaking of which. I saw the TP card of Ivan Rodriguez priced at
$35 the other night. I pity the people who try and complete that
set -- it's worse than the award winners and tony gwynn cards from
    ultra.

Even though Beckett's has the Hockey "B" cards at around $8-15 (for
most of them), dealers are definitely holding on to them, or
charging way above book for them.

Good luck guys. Thankfully they did Pinnacle FB right -- even if the
    decollation stunk.
420.7Decollation better ??CARTUN::PAVLOCKFri Jun 19 1992 14:4211
    BTW,

A friend on mine bought a box and made a set out it it.

From a sample size of one, sounds like the decollation in the baseball
is better than the FB or hockey.

Anyone else had any experiences with putting a set together?

420.8Nice looking cardEBBCLU::EBBTGTue Jun 23 1992 14:2012
I just bought a couple of packs to see what they looked like and was
satisfied with them. There the same as Football and hockey,a real nice
looking card. I bought the last packs in the box for $1.75 ea. and I
got a gold card,#10 of 12. On the front side is Ruben Sierra, and on the
back is Dave Justice.Their names appear over the gold bar on the
bottom, does anyone have any of these, and who are the players that are
    on these cards?

420.10Poor Quality Control!!KAOS::STOLLTue Jun 23 1992 21:027
I opened a box and a half and got not a one!(gold) I also am very
disapointed at Score's quality control alot of the cards had
surface scratches in the lower left corner or were bent on one
corner. I don't like to be a complainer but for a 1st run on
premier cards I would think quality control would be looked at
carefully. One good thing was I got 1 full set and almost
    completed another from 1 box.
420.11MARLIN::MATOSWed Jun 24 1992 12:446
I opened one box last night and also didn't get any of the (gold)
double sided cards. I'm about 29 cards short of a set, on one of
the wappers it memtion that there's a 1 out of 125 chance of getting
a gold card so I guess I missed my chance of getting one.

    Don't you know that I bought 15 packs last night,and I left 7 packs
in the box, this little boy buys one of those packs and got lucky,he
got the Frank Thomas gold card, how did I know that this kid was going
to get this card,I stood right there and watched him open it knowing
that there had to be something there because I didn't buy them all.

420.14Team 2000 in cellos (3 per)ELMAGO::JVERGOMon Jul 06 1992 23:4630

Came into a cello box this weekend. $2.99 per pack, 24 packs per box,
27 cards per pack. Each pack contains 3 team 2000 cards. Very nice
cards with gold left hand and bottom borders, but they don't have the
glossy finish of the regular issue pinnacle cards. I suppose these are
the equivalent of the impact players found in the regular issue score.
This first series includes players who score thinks will be around in
    the year 2000?
    Check list from memory:
    	Mussina
    	Thomas
    	Plantier
    	Knoblauch
    	Grissom
    	Deshields
    	Walker
    	Nagy
    	DeSarcina
    	I Rodriguez
    	Guzman
    	Gonsalez
    	Hollins

Well, you get the picture. An 80 card set (40 series 1, and 40 series
2). A nice group of rookies (youngsters) on a pretty good looking card.

I'd say If you can find the Thomas for $5 or less and Mussina, Thome,
Bagwell, Gonzales, Rodriguez and Guzman's for $3-$4 or less you'll
be in the ballpark. Don't forget the impact player Thomas is $4 and
    plentifull.

420.23another insert set - SlugFestDDIF::TANCILLSooner or later it all gets realMon Sep 28 1992 19:5021

Score has begun its Upper Deck imitation, packaging two different
kinds of Super (jumbo) Packs. There is regular Super Packs for
series 2 with 3 Team 2000 cards in the range of 41-80. Also there
are specially marked SuperPacks which also contain one SlugFest card
per pack in addition to the 3 Team 2000 cards. not sure what the
suggested retail is but you can be sure they effectively killed
the regular SuperPacks with these SlugFest version. The $2.99
SRP is stickered over on the SlugFest packs.

SlugFest is a 15 card insert set of the top sluggers, all horizontal
shots of the players in various stages of swinging the bat. I like
the Cecil best, it has the ball coming in as he is swinging.
    Here's a partial checklist:

    	1 - Cecil Fielder	2 - 3 - Jose Canseco
    	4 - 5 - David Justice	6 -
    	7 - Ken griffey 8 - Ron Gant 9 - Ryne Sandberg
       10 - 11 - Frank Thomas 12 -
       13 - Kirby Puckett 14 - Cal Ripken 15 - Jeff Bagwell

You can sure tell that Score printed a lot of these cards. If they
need to do jumbos and super jumbos, they have a lot of cards to move.

It's a shame they have to "flood" the market this way. I really liked
    this set, too.

Isn't there one per pack ? Most dealers seem to hold back anyway if
they feel something is too low. I know most won't even sell something
unless there's a price guide out on it.

Buyer - "How much for that card there ?"

    Dealer - "I can't sell it yet. Beckett's doesn't have a price so I
could be giving you a 500$ card and I could miss out
sending my kids to Harvard down the road"

Buyer - "How come you've got that card priced so high"

Dealer - "It's a real rare card and Beckett's is priced too low"

True, but they (from what I've heard) are only around if you buy from
Sam's. No one else got these packs. Maybe Sam's does a LOT more
volume than I gave them credit for. What are the Team 2000 cards
going for? There are 3 of those in each jumbo and they're in ALL
    jumbos...
420.30FUTURE::JST_ONGEJohn St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715Tue Oct 13 1992 15:164
    I didn't hear that about only Sam's having them. Sam's must've paid
Score some bucks to do this insert only for them.

I've also heard the same story, but not just Sam's, it's supposedly
a Sam's and WalMart exclusive. Only WalMart Corp. got the jumbo
    Pinnacle with SlugFest.

I'm a bit curious as to what Beckett knows that we don't. A very small
supply came and went to Sam's and Wal-Mart, if hat's all there is
then you would expect the prices to be higher, at least equivalent
to other recent subsets. Thomas at $5 doesn't compare to Best Hitter
Thomas @ $16, ultra all-star Thomas @ $20, etc. Yes it is one
SlugFest per pack, but that in itself doesn't explain the low prices.

Either the SlugFests will rise for the next couple months because there
really aren't that many of them out there or Dr. James is trying to
tell us that Score really printed tons of these SlugFest cards and that
perhaps they are going to show up in quantity, maybe in some other package.

Score isn't the only one to print jumbo packs just for Wal-Mart. I
have also seen 1992 NFL Wildcard series 1 jumbos at Wal-Mart. It was
20 cards or so for $2.79/each and on the outside it states that in
every pack you are guarenteed a WildCard Suprise card plus a special
insert. It made me curious enough to buy one pack, sure enough I
got the suprise card #1, plus one of a six card insert set. The
card was of John Elway, it looked exactly like the other WildCard
singles except for the football swirl in the lower left hand corner.
It was numbered 2 of 6 or 3 of 6. Pretty cheesey. Attention
    Wal-Mart shoppers, another exclusive...
