418.0. "1992 Fleer Ultra Baseball" by CARTUN::PAVLOCK () Wed Apr 08 1992 14:24

My local dealer just got the '92 Fleer Ultra Baseball cards in on
    Monday.

I assume this set is Fleer's answer to Topps Stadium Club.

I have a few questions about this set:

    - How does it compare to the Topps Stadium Club?

    - Do places like BJ's, Sam's and Rotman's sell the wax boxes or is this
a dealer only kind of a set?

    - Is it worth $50 a box for Series I in your humble opinion?

    Regards,
    Denny

I have not seen the cards at all, the one thing I did hear is that
dealers in the hobby got only 1/3 of the production with the remaining
2/3 going to places like Sam's, Bjs, Pace, etc.

If that is true you might want to wait, $50 sounds way too high.

Have you seen the cards? What are they like?

I only took a quick glance at the cards. Nice looking! They look a
lot like last year's Stadium club, glossy finish, nice embossed seal,
    etc., etc.

Just hope they don't end up like Fleer Ultra Football, I bit on
football when it was $30 a box, and now they are selling for $7-12 at
area shows. I think $50 a box is way to high, looking at what happened
to Fleer Ultra Football this past year.

I always thought that last year's Fleer Ultra products were nothing
special in comparison to their regular product. Sure the design was
better, but it's not like they couldn't have used it for their
regular sets. The stock was the same, only the price was different
except the last couple of months when you could pick up Football
    dirt cheap.

Just came from a shop with a few packs. Nice looking cards!
10 card Tony Gwynn subset and an autographed card are randomly
inserted aslo a 25 card award winners subset. Rumor has it that
the prices are going up because of a law suit by Topps for copying
the Stadium Club design. My local shop had a few boxes 2.00/pack
    60.00/box.

Read a short promo ad on these in the latest SCD. It mentioned the
25 sub set, but also mentioned a 20 card rookie set. It did say
that the production would be equal to the '91 quantity, which
was quite a few. As a matter of fact didn't ultra go back to the
presses last year, and didn't that create caos for the ultra market?
As a matter of fact a reliable source here in ALBQ. has said that
fleer has recently done the same thing with this years rookie
sensation cellos. He told me today that he knows for a fact that there
are 163 new cases of cellos in Albq today.

I bought a box yesterday... ended up 18 cards short of a 300 card set.
4 Gwynn inserts, both Cy Young cards, plus 4 Gold Glove cards... no
more than 3 of any card. They are the best cards I've seen so far in
    92.

I don't think you will find these much below $40 a box, I saw an order
form laying out on the counter at my dealers, and he is paying $38 a
box for these. He also is only paying $8 a box for Fleer BK Update.
I'm not sure but I think he goes through a middle man for these.
Anyways he is going to ask $55 for these when they come in.

I got 2 packs of these tonight. These are more like Stadium Club
'91, than Fleer Ultra 91. Nice pictures, no stats about batting avgs
in the strike zone, no rookie card picture. I'd MUCH rather buy
these than then the Stadium Club. Here's hoping I can find them
at Sam's, Bj's, etc... also have rookie cards marked within the
set, not a subset. I got an Ivan Rodriguez and a Darrell Kile in
    2 packs...

These are nice cards, but the backs don't really do much for me, could
we get less space and face and few more stats? Do you folks like
    only seeing last year/season total?

What a quality job fleer did overall, excellent front/photos.

On to price: this weekend there as was semi-big show at BG and
dealers were asking $70-$80/box. I hope not many people bought
at this, as even some of the wax dealers admitted this week the
boxes will come into wholesale accounts, $50 a box seems about
the best to hope for from show wax dealers in the next few
weeks. Here's to good luck at the wharehouse stores.

Is anyone else who can check local wharehouse stores interested
in pooling together, whoever gets them first buys a set quantity

I just saw them at a local store for $67.50 today at lunch. I bought
three packs and got three! Gwynn insert cards.

At a show this past weekend, they were selling the Thomas card from $6
to $15.. the Gwynn inserts at $10... no packs were available when I
    got there in the afternoon.

I don't feel so bad buying a box for $55. Finished a set and within
80 cards of a second set... and most of those 80 are the commons.

It's a nice touch by Fleer to keep the collation of ultra good.
Last year's collation was good too. (football I remember especially).

Per pack price is riding the hype wave to a solid $2/pack in the
southern nh area. Boxes have gone fluctuated greatly, going up
in progression, $45/$50/$52/$60/$70, settling at $70 in the two
retail card shops that had any boxes towards the end of the day.
I have a feeling the next time a see the wholesale type wax
dealers at a show who told me they would have it this week for
    $50, somehow they'll magically be charging $65 instead ;-(.
Hopefully patience will bring some sanity.

I've bought a few more packs (about 10, like I said a few).
Very impressive front layout, photog and use of colors. I
really like the checklists this year that kept the phaded
pictire behind numbers and names. 3 checklists, #300 has
    ryan, who is on #298 & #299?

I'm getting a little bit perturb with Fleer's marketing strategy here
of giving out a bit of their supply and then seemingly holding the
rest of it for a couple months. Anyway it appears the retail/wholesale
supply may finally being showing up this week. The local Toys R Us
got a case yesterday, didn't limit it like they did with stadium, so it
all went inside of one day. There was none there went I check today at
lunch, but I'm almost glad since $1.59/pack, $57.24/box is no great
price imho. Nothing yet at Sam's here in nh, although rumor has it
    Bj's maybe getting some tomorrow...

The explanation I got was Fleer filled the orders they got first. Most
dealers thought last year's sucked and didn't sell a lot, so they
didn't order a lot. Then Fleer concentrated on the "candy" stores.
That must be what's coming now. They'll then try to fill the dealers
request that all of a sudden realized they were hot... I think they'll
    still come down even more...

Has anybody heard about a law suit over these cards with Topps?
One of my local card shops told me friday that Fleer had just
lost a law suit with Topps. The owner had told me about a month
ago that Topps was suing Fleer for copying the technology for
producing the photo like cards. The result is supposed to be
that Fleer can no longer make these cards. If thats the case
then series 1 may be the only Fleer cards like this and that
could make them more desirable than they are already!

Fleer Ultra hasn't been out that long. With the way these court
cases drag along, it's unlikely that they've even gone to court
yet if there is a lawsuit. I haven't seen anything about a law-
suit in SCD or any other trade magazines. Must be one of those

Does the current fleer ultra series I "scene" remind anyone of
stadium I last year? 'Just wait and it will be all over the
place for a decent price'. I have this sense of deja vu that
this isn't going to come true for ultra series I much in the way
all that supply never materialized for stadium baseball series I
    last year.

I'm not saying Fleer didn't produce a hefty amount of these cards,
but rather that the manipulators/the wholesalers will again do
quite an effective job of keeping the supply down to a trickle and
thus keeping the price fairly high. Sigh.

If anyone sees sets again for $35, buy me one (or two), I'll pay you
$40 for them. It would be interesting to see if that same dealer is
still at $35 next week now that the almighty Beckett says $55 for the

Fleer ships to the dealers first and then to the retail stores.
Fleer has started shipping to the retail stores.
In another 3-4 weeks there should be plenty for everyone.

Hope this turns out to be true, but I've also heard it all before.
Why did Fleer ship to dealers, who were limited to 2 cases btw,
then wait several *months* to ship to the retail stores? What
possible motive could they have had to wait so long other than to
create an artificial perception of limited supply? If this was their
reason then they have given the speculators and wholesalers
a perfect climate to sit on whatever they have and not supply
it in mass quantities to the retail stores. Would you as
a wholesaler pass it on to a retailer at $35-$40/box if you
could trickle it out over time and get $45-$60 a box (or more) by
selling it to dealers? This is exactly what is happening right
now, sure you can get cases of Fleer Ultra right now, but you
have to pay 1200+ for a case of 20 boxes. Maybe in a few weeks
more of it comes out and the price drops tp maybe $1000/case.
Maybe. Unless really significant quantities hit the retail
and "wholesale" stores, you and I don't have a prayer of seeing
individual boxes for less than $50 at shows or in dealer shops.

I'm not saying there isn't more than a few cases out there, but
rather I'm saying the end consumer ain't going to see much of this
supply, not enough to drive down prices a whole lot from their
current inflated levels. I really hope I'm wrong, but I'm
beginning to get the sinking feeling I'm right, just like
Stadium baseball series 1 last year, remember?

Regarding this delaer and 180 cases, proof is in the pudding, where
are you and this dealer located? And how much is he/she selling
boxes for? What's his/her phone number?

The story this weekend seems to be that Fleer has indeed shipped
all the series I out, the candy wholesalers have at least some as
there were reports of single boxes popping up at the local CVS
stores for $1.49/pack. Needless to say the one box per store
didn't last long, with at least one store selling it to an employee
before it even made it to the shelf. Also I heard another report
of K-bee or Ames getting some, but selling it at $2.99/pack!

One of the bigger wholesale dealers in nh is supposed to get his
50 some cases this week, it has shipped but not arrived yet as
of friday. This dealer usually sells at a decent price, but always in
tune with or just below the going market rate. Market rate being
the almightly SportsNet, which apparently is still at 1200-1300/case.
Maybe it will come down some this week, but unless you get lucky
at a store somewhere I think boxes will still be $60 or more at shows.
At a show today they were $80/box, $2.25-$2.50/pack. No bargain.
Anybody else see much this weekend?

I really am convinced the supply will be "regulated" such that prices
will not drop all that much, the only chance to see a box under $50
will be if you camp out at one of the 'wholesale' stores. What's
going to conspire to keep the price up is the aforementioned
"regulated" supply, plus the $125 initial price tag on the award winner
subset, along with $5 initial Beckett price for Gywnn inserts.

Ok guys, tell me how wrong I am again, and please pick us up a box
if anyone finds them under $50, at least 5 noters are interested
in one box each at less than $50.

Exactly proves my point. Even when/if someones gets a decent
quantity they won't sell it cheap to us consumers at shows when
they can get $1300/case on the "wire". There is much more of
a conspiracy/collusion happening here then you might like to think.
Just because Fleer made X thousands of cases, doesn't mean you'll
see any at a decent price. What the big players get they will
conspire to trickle out and thus keep up the price, the rest that
gets thru will be snapped up very quickly by the pavement pounders.

Time is the only ally your average collector potentially has in a
situation like this. Some of the big boys may dump some when they
need the money to buy the next hot thing (which from what I'm hearing
is going to be this year's Leaf).

Is Fleer Ultra scarce? No, probably not such a thing these days, but
it is "limited" and a great looking card and currently "hot". Given
the price of the inserts it will probably stay well over $60/box
even if more of it shows up this week. Series II should be more
reasonable, again following closely what happened with Stadium Club
    baseball last year.

I found them at CVS after constant every other day searching they
finally got a few boxes and I happened to stop by before someone
else instead of after someone else for a change. Their regular selling
price is $1.49 per pack as most of you already know. But this
particular CVS has had a 25% off sale on all of their cards for a
couple of weeks now. And they put the 92 Ultra at the same, thus
bringing the price down to $1.11 per pack. I couldn't believe it
actually a lower than expected retail price. So naturally I brought
    a bunch.

All of the boxes were open on the shelf.
No closed boxes were available. You might want to check your local
CVS regularly. They have no idea what they will get and when they
will get it. But if you ask them when they recieve their
shipments, because different stores recieve on different
days, you could plan to drop by and possibly get some for yourself.

Like I mentioned earlier, their promo article said that they would be
producing just as many as last year. With all the interest picking up
on the new products ('92 Leaf, Pinnacle, and Stadium II), and with
this newest wave of Ultra hitting the retail markets, we should see a
decline in the ultra prices at the SCD level.

Don't know about 'the SCD level', but you make a good point about
the new arrivals. Anything new effects stuff that has been out for
awhile, a significant retail supply of Ultra now with new products
competing against it could conspire to bring down Ultra prices.
However, I'll make two additional points for your consideration:

    	1) Indeed Fleer said same amount of Ultra as last year, if you
assume equal production of series I and II then there is "only"
half as much Ultra out there now as all of last year (with the
remaining half to come in series II). Last year was only 1
    	  series.

    	2) Series II is expected in early July, so I would speculate
that the splash of series 1 won't be around for long, grab
it while you can for less than $60/box, once the retail splash
dries up and series II hits in a month or so, the price is likely
    	  to head back up.

If you're interested in Ultra series 1, time the retail supply dip to
get a good deal on the cards, it won't last forever and once the turn
back up comes these cards are nice enough to never look back.

All just my personal opinion of course, fwiw,

The show I was at today had a few people (2) selling at $2.00/pack,
    other $2.25, rest still at $2.50/pack, $75-$80/box.

This is clearly for what it's worth: the one large new england
area dealer still hasn't received his ultra from Fleer. The story
now is that Fleer had some production problems and has yet to ship
the largest orders. To me this means the price may yet come down after
all because by the time these "big guys" get their "big orders" no
one is really going to care, it's too late, people's attention is
and will turn to the newer stuff like pinnacle (out today for
$75-$78/box!, 1st weekend b.s.), leaf, etc. It will be interesting to
see if this latest story is actually true and perhaps the wharehouse stores
will get some after all. Supposedly series II ultra may now be delayed
from early July to well into August. Take all this with a grain of
    salt...

Award winners remain pretty hot, but series 1 sets continue to sit
or come down in price as dealers who broke boxes try and move the
sets. They were anywhere from $40-$54.95 today and not even the $40's
were selling. It will be interesting to see if the next baseball
beckett actually reflects this. If Beckett really follows what things
are actually selling for, the award winners will be up and the overall
series 1 price should be down.

I think if you're in new england and were waiting for these cards,
now is the time to get them. Large new england orders were shipped
this past week with bjs, sam's, pace and even costco getting their orders.
Unfortunately I was working from home last week and missed all the
wharehouse deals. Sam's got something like 5 cases or so, gone in
a half hour. Costco reportedly got 37 cases last tuesday, no limit,
gone in several hours. Both were selling it for around $37 a box.
So if you see some local dealers with a bunch all of the sudden,
tell them you know they got it at Costco and you want it for $45
    a box!

Also the large new england dealer I have referred to before got his
(some of you may know I'm talking about Peter Jay of Northland Sports
Cards). According to the horses mouth he got 50+ cases, alot of
which was ear marked (sold) already to local dealers and regular
customers. He had promised all these weeks when he didn't have it
to sell it at a reasonable price when he got it. I saw him yesterday
at the Derry flea market and I think he kept his word, selling boxes
    for $55 each, not bad.

I have to admit Fleer has gotten more of this into retail outlets than
I thought they would and it's kinda of late so some people don't
care anymore. I've seen it (or heard reports of it) at Caldor's, Ames,
CVS for $1.49 (disappeared quickly in each case), also at various
magazine wholesaler outlets like the regular Fleer baseball cellos,
most recently at my local Shaw's for $1.89/pack. So it's around in
this area (finally) right now, you can get a decent deal on it if you
look around or bargain a bit, but it also is being snatched up, I still
think it will be tough to find at a decent price in another few weeks.
(just in time for series II!) Some of it may indeed be finding it's
way to other parts of the country, the story I've heard is that
the west coast and south got their big orders early and it's
mostly gone in those regoins, so apparently it is still moving for
$1100-$1200/case over SportsNet even with all this supply showing
up in this area. If you bought it here at Costco for around $750/case,
you might just ship it to someone on the west coast willing to pay
$1000-$1100/case. Take this with a grain of salt, I have no first
hand knowledge of what is happening on "the net", only second hand
info, but the main point I wanted to make was to buy ultra series I
now if you were waiting, it has been shipped. If somebody wants some
at $55, I will probably see the folks from Northland at a show this
sunday. Did anyone get lucky at the wharehouse stores??

you were allowed only one. I hear BJ's may limit cards like these in
the future to only members and not allow people to walk in and pay

BJ's in Westboro limited sales to one per customer per day, so
I was fortunate enough to be able to pick up 2 boxes before they
ran out. However, the "per day" restriction, as I found out the
hard way, was only done at the Westboro store. I called the other
BJ's when Westboro ran out, and found that Weymouth was the only
store in the local area that hadn't received their shipment yet.
The shipment came in the Saturday before last, as I found out
when I called that morning. Since my only previous experience was
with the Westboro store, I assumed they were restricting sales the
same way. Therefore, I thought that I could show up at any time
during that day and easily score a box. Well, I was going to
dinner in Weymouth, so I decided to go over to BJ's after that.
When I arrived at 8:30 PM, they had been sold out for a couple of
hours (15 cases worth). The guy there explained that they had made
customers buy them one at a time and leave the store with them
before returning. Customers would buy one, drop it in their car,
and get right back into line. Hell, the last case was damaged and
people kept scooping them right up anyway. Needless to say, I was
pissed and let them know it. He said that Stoughton had done
their distribution the same way and they had gone just as fast.
I just wish I had known that Westboro was the exception to the rule
before waiting to go down there and get some.

It was good to see Fleer add a couple more of these insert cards to
each box. In two boxes I got 19 of the 30 insert cards with no dupes.
Beats series I where two boxes yielded me 5 Gwynns and 7 Award Winners.
Seems like Leaf gives you less Gold Leaf rookies per box this year. In
two Series II boxes, I got 9 of the rookies of which one was a dupe. I
believe I got the same distribution in Series I. Last year in two boxes
I got 7 in one and 8 in the other for Series II.

While still a little expensive to complete, I do like the idea of Leaf
putting one "gold" card per pack. At least you get a shot at some of
the big stars and a fighting chance at completing this set. These gold
cards are much nicer than those stupid Topps Gold cards which I really
couldn't see what the big deal was with them, plus you'd be lucky to
    get one in a box.

Getting back to Fleer Ultra though, I really like their distribution
and in each of the four boxes I bought I got a set out of each one.
These cards aren't cheap and it's nice to get a set out of a box. Leaf
on the other hand is atrocious as far as distribution goes. Even with
two boxes I was still three cards short of a 264 card set. At least
this time, I hit it big with duplicate stars (6 Griffey, 4 Thomas,
5 Clemens etc.), but I had plenty of duplicate stiffs too. And in the
gold cards, I got two of the checklists and the Leaf intro card which
is nice in the black, red and gold.

Anyone happen to notice the High /Low price in the latest Becketts?
