405.0. "'Promo' cards" by SCHOOL::RIEU (Support DCU Petition Candidates) Tue Mar 10 1992 12:30

I didn't see a note on these, if I missed it please feel free to
    move this.
I bought a Classic 4 sport rookie set that came with 2 promo cards,
a Rocket Ismail and a Syracuse hoop player/NBA rookie who's name
escapes me at the moment. On the back they say 'For Promotional
Purposes Only' I've seen them in shops, but what are the typical values of
these? I'm new to collecting, so I'm trying to get a handle on all this
    'stuff'!
                                        Denny

Your write John, it's funny you mentioned it. I remember watching the
home shopping club just a little while ago and they were real anxious
about selling those promo cards. The home shopping club sure likes to
promote classic and the promo cards.

I have an emmett smith promo from the 1991 convention that I bought at
auction about a month ago. Tuff Stuff lists some of the promos in what
I call the "unusual section" (i.e. after baseball/football/basketball/
hockey). The card I have was listed last month for $125. I guess due to
scarcity?

I see a promo as being something given away to a specific amount of people
(sometime large, sometimes small) which is specific unto itself and
different than the regular issue available to everyone everywhere.
    example:
Proset distibutes a player of the month card to the home crowd of
the player before a game a week or 2 after that month (I got Pat
Lafontaine's ProSet P.O.T.M. card a week 1/2 ago before they played
Boston). This is a specially made card, different from the regular set
card and supposedly available only to those attending the game on that
specific night at the Buffalo Memorial auditorium.

Cards given away with the purchase of a set (Classic's Ismial,
Score's Lindros set) seem to common and available to be promos.

    Don't quote me,

I picked up a set of the '92 Donruss promos (12) in a trade. I was
really unsure about the value, the guy I traded with really wanted
my card (Thomas team Pinnacle) and assured me that the set was worth
the Thomas. I've never seen them before, but they were numbered 1-12
and had "Donruss Promotional?" on the back. Did I get burned, and
    what are these going for?

If you indeed got a 92Donruss Promo set I think you got a good
deal. 92 Team Pinnacle #4 Thomas/Clark 50.00 from August Becketts.

But, try and get someone to buy those promos, then you will really
know what they are "worth". I would guess that promos are a much
narrower market than inserts (at this point in time).

Picked up the latest Tuff Stuff today. There up to $990 now, but I have
to agree with Jeff, try selling them for that! As a matter of fact I
Commisioned a dealer to put them on the sports net @ $700 last week,
still no luck. I'll probably end up trading them at a big show were
    there might be some interest.

    Jim,
It still sounds like even if you have to fire sale them, it
was a decent trade and you'll probably come out well ahead.
Heck even at $100, you make out ok.
