403.0. "1992 3rd Annual Contest" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Tue Mar 03 1992 20:09

The Rocket's in camp, the days are getting longer, NESN will be
having Grapefruit League games pretty soon so that means that
holy day "Opening Day" is almost upon us. So it's time for the
3rd Annual Sports Memorabilia Pick the Winners Contest.

	Last year's First Prize was:

		1 - 1983 Donruss Ryne Sandberg Rookie
		1 - 1984 Donruss Wade Boggs
		1 - 1984 Donruss Mike Schmidt
and some other choice cards ;-)

so I'll try to come up with some more good stuff again this year.

To win you have to pick the division, league and World Series
winners. Tie breakers will be: 1) Which team wins the All Star
game 2) What place will the Yankees come in (an answer of "Last"
is acceptable instead of 7th) 3) Which pitcher will have the most
wins in the American League and how many.

	For example:

AL East - Toronto Blue Jays
AL West - Kansas City Royals
	NL East - Chicago Cubs
NL West - Los Angeles Dodgers

AL Champs - Kansas City Royals
	NL Champs - Chicago Cubs

World Champs - Kansas City Royals

	All-Star Game - AL
The Yankees will finish 2nd (1 game behind the Sox)
Pascual Perez will win 27 games.

You'd get 1 point for each division winner, 2 points for each
league winner and 3 points for the WS champs.

	Good luck !

403.57Contest standings...what I have..EMDS::MACFARLANEThu Jun 25 1992 17:0432
I also took the liberty of setting up a spreadsheet for this contest
with everyone's teams. Here's how I have the standings looking:

    Tancill $1,950
    Hayes 1,760
    Whitehair	1,413
    Ashe	1,330
    Karlson	1,158
    Belisle	1,138
    Macfarlane 1,123
    McEvoy	1,090
    O'Loughlin	1,060
    Vergo 825
    Kelly 800

As a group, our total investment of $11,000 has risen 24% since we
started this with the Feb issue of Beckett's and is now "worth" a
    total of $13,647.

    Monthly increases were to date:

    Feb 6.5%
    Mar 3.9%
    Apr 5.5%
    May 4.0%
    Jun 2.2%

Not sure what all this means, but I just thought it was sort of
interesting. I guess it means we should all have sold out of our DEC
stock and bought Brien Taylor RC's!!!

Are we mixing our contests here and note 377?

Thanks for the update Pat! I think one thing it means is that when
your talking the longer term (even 2 months vs. 4) the right older cards
will out perform the newer unproven masser-produced ones (comparing my
picks to steve hayes'). I have a sinking feeling that Jeff Reardon and
Lee Smith may just overtake Brein Taylor!

Victory of the JEFFs - and the Jays! What a great year of Baseball
(for me anyway - I won this and my Rostiserie League)! Now if I could
just come up with a few of the megabucks numbers!

So does this mean I have to donate next year's prize ;-)
