377.0. "A New Contest" by FUTURE::JST_ONGE (John St.Onge USDSL DTN 275-2715) Mon Jan 13 1992 20:50

While I don't invest in cards, I do find myself looking at price guides to
see how much I'm going to be held hostage to a dealer if I have to go out
and buy some card I can't get through trading. Anyway, it's easy sometimes
to look at some cards that really shot up and say "Geez, I had a few of
those". No wonder that closet-investor rjk wanted a few of them ;-)

Anyway, I was thinking what if someone gave me a 1,000$ and said buy me
some cards for investment purposes. Since it's someone else's money I'd
have no problem blowing it for them and I'd probably take more chances
with their money than my own. I also wonder what cards other people would
invest in (-rjk picks up 1000 Rich Gedman rookies with his 1000$). So I
figured why not have a little contest with fictitious money to see who'd
be the best at investing in baseball cards. First prize would be a 1989
Score Factory set. Yeah I know, not much of a prize, but then I have to
save the good stuff for the regular standings contest.

Rules are as follows:

Baseball Cards Only

Prices to be used will be "HIGH" prices from the current Beckett's issue
(Ozzie Smith issue) for regular issue cards only. You cannot select any
error / variation cards or any insert cards like Donruss Elite, Upper
Deck Silver Sluggers or SP# cards.

You have 1000$ to invest. You can buy any multiples of cards. For instance,
you can buy 1000 Phil Plantier 1991 Donruss Rookies at 1$ each, or 1 1955
Sandy Koufax Rookie at 1000$, or you can buy 1000 separate cards as long
it doesn't add up over 1000$. You can also buy complete sets if you want
to.

The deadline for entries will be Feb. 13th.

Please make your entries as follows:

Company Year # Bought Card # High Price Total$ Card Description
------- ---- -------- ------ ---------- ------ ----------------------------
UD 1990 250 2 2$ 500$ Phil Plantier
UD 1989 5 Set 250$ 500$ Complete Set (1-700)

The winner of the contest will be the person who has seen his/her invest-
ment grow the most by the start of the 1992 World Series. In other words,
if you bought 500 Upper Deck Todd Van Poppel's at 2$ from the Feb. issue
(or whatever the Ozzie Smith issue is) and the price in the October or
November issue was 4$, then you made 1000$.

	OK John,

I sat down yesterday and put together my list of cards I think
will be the best investment for my $1000. But, I don't what to
post it. If I post it I know everyones going to pick the same
	cards as I did....8^)))

Whats the solution? Should we mail our picks to you directly?

You can post it to the notesfile /HIDDEN.

After you post it, type "SET NOTE/HIDDEN" at the NOTES prompt.

If you all want to wait until John and I post ours (moderator
privvies doncha know), that can be done too, although I don't
know if John is planning on participating.

I have to get the new Beckett's first ... probably this weekend.

    Hi,

Do the cards you pick have to be only Basbeball cards or can they be
    from any sport?

    Thanks,

377.7First Entry wins?IAMOK::GASPARONIThu Jan 16 1992 14:488
John, how about the first entry into the notes file on the picks, wins
the contest. That way, we can see what people are selecting, and maybe
go out and buy some of these cards if they start to take off. It kind
of looses the fun of it, if everyones picks are hidden.

So if people want to copy, thats fine, but the first entry with the
picks is the winner. Its going to be hard to get duplicates, cause
everyone will have different ideas, and combinations.

    John,
I would suggest you set the deadline for Feb 1. Reason being, the
March Beckett will be out the week of Feb 3. This would provide
movement information that might change how a contestant would have
    spent their money.

    as I have them:

    Hayes	2,240.00
    Tancill	1,850.00
Whitehair	1,497.40 (Included in his portfolio were two 91 OPC cards
that Beckett's decided to discontinue pricing. I
used the LAST listed Beckett's price)
    Macfarlane	1,372.60
    Ashe	1,372.50
    McEvoy	1,330.00
    Karlson	1,318.50
    Belisle	1,020.35
    Vergo 995.00
    O'Loughlin 956.00
    Kelly 800.00

From the Oct to Nov Beckett's we were up as a group 1.68% and for the
duration of the contest we were up 34.14%. Without Mike Kelly, we
    were up.......more. &~)

Congrat's to Mr Hayes for loading up on 92T Brien Taylor's.

Congrats Steve, I seem to be destined to finish 2nd. (not that I'm
    complaining!)

Pat that was me who picked the 92T Brien Taylor's (along with that
loser Frankie Rodriguez). Mr. Hayes proved that older cards make a
more solid investment in the long term, slowly over taking my rabbit
jump start lead with his picks of Lee Smith and Jeff Reardon RCs.

It's the same as a recent note, underpriced RCs of proven players.
    Have any other gems, Steve?

Wish I had really invested the money. Can't beat the interest rate.
Glad the World Series started after the contest ended. May see a
drop in Reardon's cards..... Hmmm maybe the Red Sox will drop him
another mil or two and bring him back next year....

As for the future. I think John StOnge has the market cornered.
He's picked up a couple thousand Rich Gedman rookies.....

I was just cleaning up some old files and found my spreadshhet with
this contest in it. I ran the #'s using the lastest Beckett's just for
fun to see where we stand. The 11 people who were in the contest
"invested" $11,000 in cards in Feb of '92. Today, that $11,000 is now
worth just over $8,300.....down 24%! Only 2 people are above the
original $1,000 (key cards are 90 Leaf A. Belle going from $6 to $15
and 82 Topps Lee Smith going from $5 to $10). One person is around the
#1,000 mark using cards from '65 - '82. Everyone else is WAY below the
$1,000 mark with the lowest worth $125 with investments in Brien Taylor
and Frankie Rodriquez. Someone also "invested" in 200 83F Viola at $5
    a piece....now worth $1 each.

Conclusions.......If you want to invest....pick older, high grade cards
for the long haul. You can get lucky, but burned just as easily with
    the newer stuff.

Don't buy high priced current year rookie cards in bulk.

Don't invest in pitchers. There's a long list of losers here from this
contest, and not all blew out their arms and includes Clemens, Viola,
Saberhagen, Morris, Reardon, Blyleven, Frankie R, Ben McDonald, Smoltz
    and Brien Taylor.

Don't invest....period. Buy to collect and have fun with them.
If they do end up paying for a year (or day) of your kid's college,
    then that's just gravy.

Last conclusion......I keep stuff WAY too long in my account.
