353.0. "Storage of Cards" by ESKIMO::RNEWCOMB (Bills Rolling along at 9-1) Thu Nov 14 1991 19:48

Now that we have a note on how to sort your cards (with some
real interesting ways of doing it), its time for a note on
how we all store our cards.

Things like...should I keep my hand collated sets in single
boxes or monster boxes or sheets in binders. What to do with
all those dups that are laying around day after day. How do
I store those more valuable single cards and rookie cards??
Do you use semi rigids or snap-its or screw down cases?? If
so, how do you decide when to move a card into a semi rigid
or to a snap-it?? For example, if you have a $10 card, what
kind of case do you put it in??

    	Inquiring minds want to know.

Personally I don't collect sets, I collect the players and sport (bb)
I'm interested in and only 9 cards (1 sheet) ea of those players.
I had to decide what type of cards would make up the 9. I decided on
Std Clb, Leaf, and U.D.. So my album would consist of 3 '89ud Griffey,
3 '91 std clb, and 3 '90/'91 leaf. There are some potential rookies,
Van popple, Bagwell, Plantier, and Vaughn ect.. I do keep the older
cards such as the '72 Mays, Aaron, Carew, '70 fb Namath, Sayers, ect
in the hard plastic holders. Those stay in a box and I find that I
enjoy the album a little more simply because they are more accessible.
Everything else for sale and only half the money raised at shows goes
back into more cards. I generally use the card saver II's for any card
valued at $2 and up, and I use the soft sleeves for everything else.
I've also found that the soft sleeves are better for the Std Clb
cards because they dont stick in the sleeve like they do in the cards
    savers.

353.3various ways to storeESMAIL::HEMONDFri Nov 15 1991 18:4813
Jared and I keep ours like this:

    Non-Sports Binders
Expensive sets	Binders (Stadium, O-Pee-Chee Premier, etc)
Less Expensive sets	600 or 800 count boxes (Topps, Donruss, etc.)
    Duplicates Monster boxes

Favorite players	Rigid Plastics (Seaver, N.Ryan, R.Henderson, etc.)

I have 1 card in a screw down. It is Tom Seaver's second year card in
near mint condition. And noooooo it's not up for grabs.

The cards I like to look at a lot, I keep them in the 9 pocket
plastic pages inside a 3 ring binder, and I include the wrapper
for that particular card. If I have more than one set, I keep
the second or third set either in a cardboard box or a plastic
case holder, with the wrapper on the outside to identify the set.

The cards I don't look at that much, I keep them in the 800 count
cardboard boxes, or whatever size box they fit in.

The valuable cards and some Holograms I really like, I keep them
in the hard rigid plastic holders, either screwdown or the snap down
type. I have been leaning toward the snap down kind lately,
because they are so much easier to open and close, and because
I had trouble with the screwdown type holder, where the screws
stripped off the threads in the plastic, and were useless, and
the screws are also kind of small and you can lose them very
	easily.

I use the monster boxes to store duplicate cards. I don't separate
the commons from the stars, they all go together in the same box.
However, I also use the plastic case holders to store small sets or
when I don't have that many duplicates of any one set.

I keep the unopened 36 count vendor boxes wrapped in an additional
plastic bag to protect the box itself from scratches, dents, etc.

As you all know by now (I hope), you should keep your cards in a
place where the temperature doesn't fluctuate much, so the attic
in your house is not a good place for them. I was talking to a
neighbor that collects cards, and she said she keeps them in the
attic. I promptly told her that was the worst place for the cards.

I liked having sets in the plastic pages for looking at them,
but have since removed nearly all of them and now keep my sets
in whatever size box is appropriate. Why? The smell that even
the non-PVC pages have gets into the cardboard. Remove a card
and smell it for yourself, this can not be good for the long
term condition of one's cards. I have my redskins collection in
plastic pages which I got in a purchase of an 88 topps set that came
in a binder of pages. These pages are the stiched kind, have
no smell and are slightly wider than most other pages so it is
easy to slide cards in and out. I have not been able to find anything
like these pages anywhere. These are also the type pages that are
slightly "cloudy" vs. being completely clear.

Why do so many brands of pages have the smell??

Has anyone located a source for pages similar to what i've described?
(top loading, slightly wider, prefer stiched, non-PVC, with no smell)

I believe those are Enor sheets Jeff.

I very much prefer the Enor sheets.

I have my Perez-Steele postcards in those sheets. Okay, the P-S
    cards that are unautographed!

After seeing what plastic sheets did to a friend's autographed
8x10 pictures, I wouldn't trust anything autographed inside the
    plastic sheets.

My autographed cards/post-cards, etc., I keep in semi-rigids.

    	Mike,

The reason is that if you didn't, you'd be sleeping in
    	a warehous 8^)
