Topps released its regular hockey cards last week. They are glossier
and on white OPC style stock and topps has finally started using action
shots instead of those boring, do-nothing, standing still shots.

I picked up one pack for 55 cents, got no one I knew of (other than the
team leader card) and I follow hockey. I'll probably just pick up the
Gretzky cards for some change unless I get a real deal, and I mean
DEAL, on a set. Any idea when stadium club comes out?

I wasn't sure if I should put this here or open a title but judging by
the frenzy that errupted over last years topps hockey file, I thought I
could save some space in the directory by writing here.

Hmmm... Rookies? Or real no-name players? I wonder if they've increased
the set size...

I'm anxious to see the Stadium Club hockey also - but not the prices :-(

    Um, lemme think......
Ok, of the 14 cards in the pack, I was familiar with Ron Tugutt(sp)
goalie for Quebec and a Brett Hull trophy card. The rest consisted of
those marginal players who've played a while and for the life of you
couldn't name them unless you're really into that team. Also there was
one card with Top prospect on it(some guy from the Bruins).
The team scoring leader card was of T. Fleury. Topps did the same
    thing last year.

    Hmmm...

Topps increased the set size to 528 cards. This up from 396. Looking
at the most recent Beckett I notice that about 30-40% are markeed FTC.
No I don't recogize the names either. Judging by the picture in the
book they look very similar to the baseball style cards. I guess that
way they get more milage out of their design team. I too will pass and
    wait for the good stuff.

Some of the mail order firms are asking $150.00 for a box (36 count)
of the Stadium Club Hockey. Once again, Topps will be printing these
by the millions, and once again the wholesalers will put these cards
on the back shelf, and once again the dealers will say that they
    can't get any. Sound familiar???????

What players are included in the 9 hockey cards in Topps Stadium Club
Charter membership 50 card set. So far I've only seen Wayne Gretzky and
Ed Belfour (going for $10 and $8 respectively) and heard Brett Hull
mentioned. Has anyone gotten their membership yet that can put my
wondering to a satisfying end by quickly jotting down the other 6
    players?

    Thanks,
    Bill

PS I'd even settle for hints !

    Bill,

I have Coffey and have seen Ray Bourque. I also saw a bunch of the
cards in a miscellanous $1 box at show. They don'y seem to be rare.

Saw them over the weekend--> there are 2 Gretzky, 2 Hull, 2 Belfour and
Coffey, Lemieux and Borque. Some joker was attempting to sell sets of
    all 9 for $45.

I've already heard stories of this selling for well over $100 per box
to dealers...this means at least $8 per pack....I know the cards are
nice...but is anyone out there willing to pay that for a pack of BRAND
    NEW cards??!!

36 packs/box right? So it would be more like around $3/pack from my
    math...

320.14Prices still to high!!!!DNEAST::WOODMAN_MIKEMon Dec 02 1991 21:056
Saw TSC Hockey selling for $120-150 a box at a show this weekend. The
dealer I was talking with sold 7 boxes while I was standing there.
Apparently this is going to be a hot item, but believe me the prices
will drop off real soon. I couldn't see paying 120 a box unless these
    cards were solid gold.

I've read the list of players in Stadium Club Hockey-No one is in the
set. The public will figure this out and the prices will fall.

Like who's missing? Newer stars, like Nolan, Belfour, Jagr, Federov, etc?
Topps isn't that dumb are they?

It's a 400 card set. I assumed only one series (and was pretty
sure I had read that somewhere to confirm it).

They have a license with the NHL, so everyone (except St. Eric)
    is fair game.

I can't bleieve there's "no one in the set".

After an initial weekend (12/1) price of $100-175, they could be
EASILY found this weekend at $80/box.

And again, I must point out, they weren't selling.

A dealer I know, who buys his boxes to break open for commons,
says he JUST bought a case at $61/box, and his "source" (a friend
he tells me), was leary of selling at that price, because he's
afraid the price will drop MUCH lower, and of course, the dealer
would then be upset at having paid $61/box.

320.21Such a deal....GWYNED::FVARNEYTue Dec 10 1991 14:446
My dealer told me not to buy them just yet cause the price
was coming down. He had them in stock, but didn't want me
to spend the money. What a guy.

Along those same lines....I spoke with a dealer friend last night, and
he said he could sell me a case for $725, which translates to $60.50 a
box.... What a drop from the $150 pre-order price...

Needless to say, everything was sold in minutes.

I went to Ames last nite and bought Stadium Hockey for $53.64
a box, The best part was when I put them on lay a way ;-).
The store manager said that all Ames stores should have
them,so get out there and start looking.

Does this set have any annoying hard to get cards or inserts that every
other company uses to manipulate you into buying twice as many packs as
    you normally would?

How many cards in the set?
How close does a box come to a full set?
How the distribution in a box?

I saw them for $1.50/pk this weekend and they were pretty stagnant.
People have their hands full trying to keep up and new stuff stays hot
only a little while before something takes its place.

    Just looking before I leap,

320.28no inserts!DDIF::TANCILLlong may you runTue Dec 31 1991 17:1813

No special inserts, a straight 400 card set, one series. One box will
most likely leave you around 100 cards short, but there are a few
noters with extras (including me) who could help complete a set after
one box worth. Prices have been anywhere from $1.50-$4.50/pack,
$50-$90/box, with the low end fairly prevelant right now as there is a
perceived over supply of these (at least as compared with baseball,
same over supply for football). Cost is thought to be around $33/box
direct, so you can figure how much you think you should be paying
per box from there. The latest beckett hockey (just out) lists these
cards for the first time, $90 for the set I think.

Thanks, I'll let you know when I take the plunge.
I'm still a little woozy over the crappy box of UD hockey I just got.
Have you noticed the rookie in UD hockey with the same last name as

Yes, back over in some reply of the UD hockey note I asked that
everyone send me their extra #455's. Although I have picked up
quite a few already, impressed my 6 year old to no end, apparently
we are related as there are only about 10 people in the US of A
who spell their name as we and our good buddy chris for the
whalers do. Be interested if you see him in any our hockey series
like series II of score or proset.

I've seen these and the football popping up in stores like Caldors and
Bradlees for $2/pack. Are the dealers dropping their prices?
320.32not much dropDDIF::TANCILLlong may you runMon Jan 20 1992 16:0614

Most dealers recently are around $2/pack, $65-$70/box. Sometimes you
can find hockey for a bit less, but football was dirt cheap before
xmas (40-45/box) and has since rebounded, now I pretty much see
football at $2/pack, $60/box. Could be the season. One convienece
store I went into had them both for $1.50/pack, they only lasted
a few days at that price. I would say right now that you can drive
a better bargain on hockey than football. Apparently football is
selling well and at higher prices oni "the net" and people have
realized that the football has more RCs than the hockey (and thus
right or wrong they infer the football is better 'investment').
Of course I agree since my man R Ervins is in the football...
