294.0. "Star Trek '25th Anniversary' Trading Cards" by FRAGLE::GUTIERREZ (Who's on 1st.. What's on 2nd..) Tue Jul 30 1991 11:52

< Roy, if you think this doesn't deserve a separate entry, feel free
	to move it. >

This entry is for the new 1991 STAR TREK 25th Anniversary trading
	cards that just came out.

The set contains 160 cards, and they depict pictures of the
characters and scenes from the episodes, both the original TV
STAR TREK series, and the sequel, STAR TREK The Next Generation.

The interesting thing about the set is the way they are organized.
They are split into odd and even numbers. The odd number cards
1,3,5,7... are for the original STAR TREK with Capt. Kirk, and
they come inside a blue logo wrapper.

The even number cards 2,4,6,8...are for STAR TREK The Next Generation
with Capt. Picard, and they come inside a light red logo wrapper.
There are 2 different check lists, #159 for the odd number cards,
and #160 for the even number cards.

The good thing about this arrangement is that if you are trying to
complete a set, and you know you need even number cards, then all
you have to do is buy the wax packs that have the light red logo.
	I like this idea.

The cards are made by Impel, and are made of good quality stock, like
the Marvel comic cards, the front of the cards are in full color, and
the backs have information about the character or a brief narrative
	about the episode in question.

They even have cards for some of the STAR TREK comics with a
narrative on the back of the card about the comic book, and cards
for collector plates. A very nice set that Trekies everywhere
	will want to own.

Here is what the back of the Commander Spock card reads like:

		Rank: Commander
		Serial #:	S 179-276 SP
Duties: First Officer, Head of Sciences
		Home: Vulcan
		Education:	Starfleet Academy (Sciences),
				Vulcan Science Academy
Personal data:	Logical, determined, controlled, human side
can display a wry sense of humor.
				Human mother, Amanda Grayson,
				Vulcan father, Ambassador Sarek
Awards/Honors:	Vulcan Scientific Legion of Honor, twice
				received the Award of Valor.

My wife picked up a box of these and they're VERY nicely done I
believe. Distribution was great. She got 1 full set, almost another
full set, and 3/4 of a third. She has some extras and is willing to
trade for some that she doesn't have, if you're willing also.

At one of the card shows I went to over the past weekend, there
was a dealer who had one Star Trek Hologram. I had no idea there
were any Holograms in the Star Trek wax packs. The one the dealer
had was a full picture of the Enterprise hanging in space, and
the back said it was H2, so there must be one for H1, but I don't
know what it is. None of the checklists say anything about these
Holograms. Does any one out there know how many Holograms are
there supposed to be, and what they are ?.

294.10Star Trek Holos are real17257::MONDARESThu Sep 12 1991 21:1256
    Hi all,

I'm a Non-Sports card collector (cringe) who just happened to be
    browsing through this conference.

Anyway, there are two holograms, H-1 is the hologram of the TV
Enterprise (Original Series) and H-2 is the Enterprise-D (Next
Generation). Info about the holograms was not advertised in
any of the order literature that I saw, but I found out about
    them from a card dealer.

These holograms are VERY, VERY hard to get. There is one hologram,
either Enterprise, Original Series or Next Generation, NEVER both,
in approximately one out of every EIGHT boxes of cards.

If you're lucky to get ahold of either or both of these cards, hang
on to them, for the going price at comic shops and sports card shops
    are, ready???

    			$30-40 per card!!!! (Ouch!!!)

If you're lucky enough to buy a box for $17, buy it and stick it in
the closet. Why? A 25th Anniversary celebration only comes once
    every 25 years. ;^)

Also, a Series II is due sometime late September or early October.

I liked my ideas for Holograms better, but am not surprised
    that there are indeed holograms.

It's the "in thing" next to signed cards ...

Personally, I'm waiting to get a signed Spider-Man card ...
(and I won't even begin my tirade about the idjits I saw in line
at a card show [adults even!] to get "spider-man's" autograph).
294.12Was I a fool for not buying it ?FRAGLE::GUTIERREZWho's on 1st.. What's on 2nd..Fri Sep 13 1991 11:1635

Well, I have to admit that I made a BIG mistake, and I should kick
myself for it, here is what happened:

When the STAR TREK cards first came out, I was at a card show, and
there was a dealer who had boxes of STAR TREK, so we started talking
about it, and he said: I opened 3 boxes, and I found a Hologram.
Since I like Holograms, I asked him to show it to me, it was the H2
Hologram. He said he would sell it to me for $7.

Well, I like Holograms, but I thought that if he opened 3 boxes
and found one, they would not be too hard to find, and even if I
couldn't find one in a pack, the price would go down later, so I
	didn't buy it.

About 2 weeks later, I saw the same dealer at another card show, and
I asked him about the Hologram. He said that he had sold it, and
that he was a fool. After he sold it, he came to find out that
the Hologram was trading for $40, and he had not idea that it was
so valuable. He also said that he had heard that you would find
one in every 3 cases, not 3 boxes, so his find was a very lucky one.

I wanted to kick myself for not buying when I had the opportunity,
but on the other hand, how was I to know that it was so rare.
I was going by my past experience with the Marvel Holograms. When
they first came out, dealers were selling them for $5 and up, and
later you could buy them for $2. Not only that, but this dealer,
at the time, was also selling the Marvel Holograms for $5, when
most of the other dealers were selling them for $2-$3, so that was
another factor which influenced me not to buy the STAR TREK Hologram
at the time, because I knew that he was a high-priced dealer.

Well, there you have it. Sometimes your past experiences are not such
a good thing to depend on, and you have to go on your gut feeling.

How did you get them, if you don't mind me asking ?. Did you find
them, or did you buy them, and what part of the country are you
located in ?. I'm just curious about if there is a pattern on
where and how many show up.
294.19Where there's a will....SDOCS1::MONDARESFri Sep 27 1991 16:3435

Shhhh!! Don't tell anyone, but here's how to find the holograms....

Place two packs, either TOS or TNG, side by side. Join them
together so that there is no gap between them. Run your finger or
thumb, whichever is more sensitive, from left to right over the
seam. Since all the packs are SUPPOSED to have 12 cards in them,
the hologram would be card number 13. This makes the pack just ever
so slightly thicker. By running your finger, I use my thumb, over
the seam, you should be able to notice a difference from one pack
to another. Mind you, I have run into some packs with only 11 cards
in them, but if you do, then all of the remaining cards would seem
to have a hologram, so be careful when you do this.

BTW, this also works for ANY sports/non-sports packs that have the
    "Randomly inserted special cards".

Some people are going to say that this is unethical, unsportsmanlike,
etc, etc... If the Star Trek holograms are going for $30-$50 at
comic/baseball card stores, which they are, then IMHO, we who collect
cards for fun (I also collect Marvel Trading Cards and the-soon-to-be-
released DC Trading Cards), are forced to pay these outrageous prices.
Hopefully, this "method" can give us the edge over some of these
specialty stores who can afford to open all of their boxes. Be
careful, though, as quite a number of store owners DO NOT allow this
    practice of "searching" their stock.

Anyway, good luck and let me know if anyone is successfull....8^)

294.22If you want it badly enough...SDOCS1::MONDARESTue Oct 01 1991 19:0422
    re: .21

    True, you/we are'nt being forced to pay $30-50 a hologram. I've
heard that there is one hologram per every THIRD CASE, then the
old Supply and Demand is going to make this a very pricey hologram.

Believe me, I've sold a D-Enterprise hologram with scratches on
in (It came in the pack like that) for $25 and the buyer did'nt
even flinch when he handed me the money.

So, yes, no one is being forced to pay $30-$50 a hologram,
but if you've got one for sale and your price is cheaper than the
dealer and you're buyer is a Star Trek fan (notice I didn't say
    Trekkie/Trekker? 8-| ), then the buyer can/will rationalize the
    cost of the purchase.

I received a merchandise catalog from Impel a few weeks ago and saw
    some interesting items for sale.

They sell binders that will hold both Star Trek I and II cards. The
binders have Star Trek stuff on the front and back along with the
    25th Anniversary promotional banner.
They (Impel) also sell complete sets of cards, TOS & TNG, with the
holos for around $40. I saw the holos, from the set, at a comic store
and there was absolutely NO scratches on it.

This catalog also has merchandise for the Marvel Universe Cards, G.I.
    Joe and other stuff.

The 2nd series have two more holos, H-3 Kirk and H-4 Picard. I saw
a Kirk holo...not bad, kinda fuzzy.

I was told by my card dealer that the 2nd series will have all four
holos randomly distributed in the packs. I have no idea what the
holo-to-box ratios, so I'll post an update when I do know....

Impel got wise to the "hologram-being-the-13th-card" trick and have
now made the holos as part of the regular 12 card/pack when they insert
    the holo.

The first comic store I saw them in wanted $.95/pack and a box at, this
is worse Nance, $29.95. |-\ They said they weren't sure if they should
sell them at that price, yeah....sure!, but until they knew what other
store prices were, they would keep there prices as is.
What really irks me is that they have the 1st series packs at $.75/pack
right alongside the 2nd series packs!!!! What a buncha maroons!!!!!!!!

I'll wait til the 2nd series hits Sav-On's (Osco to you Easterners ;-))
The prices for the 1st series have been $.59-$.69/pack...no further
    discounts for a box.

294.42Very sharp looking set...STUDIO::GUTIERREZI'm on my break Thu Jun 18 1992 12:3220

I bought a box and also got pretty good luck with it,
I got 2 complete regular sets, 1 complete specialty card set,
2 Holos, and a few cards short of a 3rd. set, plus some
    	duplicates.

These cards are real nice, very sharp looking, much better than
those of Series I or II. Also, on the back of the wrapper there
is an offer where they will send you a card checklist and a
limited edition Hologram (not available at retail) when you send
your name, address, birthdate, 3 wrappers and a check or money
order for $2; there is a limit of 1 per person, but I'm sure the
dealers will figure out a way around this limitation.

On that note, has anyone noticed that card #45 (Ship Schematic
Dorsal Plan View) is the only card in the set that doesn't have
the 'Star Trek The Next Generation' logo on the bottom right
hand corner ?. This appears to be an error card.

She has an extra SP3 embossed card.
