292.0. "1991 Topps Baseball (w/Desert Shield 'stamps')" by ELMAGO::JVERGO () Tue Jul 23 1991 16:40

    I have seen a few of the Desert Shield cards at shows lately.
    These cards are running from $5 (commons)- $200 (Thomas & Griffey).

    I would be interested in knowing what these cards are going for,and
    what kind of interest there are in these elsewhere.

    I should have explained the following right off the bat:

    Topps distributed 6313 sets (1 days production?) randomly packed.
    To the troops leaving for the Gulf. These cards were the regular
    '91 topps bb cards with the addition of one thing, a gold stamp
    of the Desert Shield logo on the front of the card.
    The feeling is that very few of these cards remain in existance.
    Due to the fact that most soldiers don't collect,and the ones that
    do could only carry so many.
    I did talk to 1 dealer he said his brother had 2% of all the cards
    in his possesion at on time or another.

    		There is an article in one of the past week's SCD where
    	a returning soldier sold a complete set for around $2000.
    	And to think that most of the soldiers just threw the cards away.

    		Live and learn !!.

    This guy's brother I mentioned earlier, completed 5 sets and sold
    them for $5000 ea in Calf. He was going around to all the barracks
    buying all he could.
    I bought a few from him before either of us knew what they were
    going to go for. I was lucky enough to get Thomas, Fernandez,
    Maas, Lankford, and Gilkey... $20

    I saw a couple of these at a show Sunday. Matt Williams for $70.00, and
    Todd Burns for $45.00.

    Hmmm......

    Tood "I pitched so badly lately it gave me heart" Burns for $45??!!

    Something to consider about these cards folks...

    	- UD uncut sheets aren't supposed to exist, but they do ...

    	- A bunch of different ProSet cards aren't supposed to exist,
    	  but they do ...

    Guess why? It's not because the people at these companies like to
    look like idiots when they say they don't sell/distribute these
    things. It's because THEFT from the printing places does exist.

    Some pretty shrewd person could easily have absconded some of these
    for himself, and sold them into the hobby. So I'd take the production
    numbers you've been quoted as so much talk until Topps admits anything
    -- and they never admit anything about production numbers.

    Why is there such a demand for these cards? Is it because they got
    shipped overseas, sat in some smart grunt's footlocker for a few
    months, and came back? Is it because when people think of Desert
    Shield, these cards will bring back all those "glorious" memories?

    I just don't understand. They're just plain old 1991 Topps cards
    with some kind of a foil stamp or something on them, aren't they?

    Hell, I'll print up some foil stamps for you ...
292.7Hi $'s = motivation to cheatELMAGO::JVERGOWed Jul 24 1991 16:427

    Pretty much much my first impression too Roy, I guess that's why
    I didn't want to risk any more than $20 on what could very well
    be counterfit cards.

292.9Trade 'em while they're hot boysELMAGO::JVERGOWed Jul 31 1991 15:5911

    I traded my Maas for a Rickey Henderson rookie and the Alex Fernandez
    for a Montana rookie both at the same show this last weekend, but
    to different dealers.
    I also talked to a guy that says his brother bought 2 cases off
    a base that was selling them for $10 a box if you can believe that!
    I didn't ask him which base , I was too dumbfounded.
    The good news is that it's nice to see the ground pounders making
    a few buck ( $100k if he sells 1 case).

    	Yes, Rotman's in Worcester take phone orders as long as you use
    	a Credit Card. I don't know if the pre-order price is still the
    	same, but you can call them at (508)791-6710. I don't have the
    	SMK number with me now, but I know it has already been posted
    	in another Note in this conference.

    Would $15 be a good price for a Tom Glavine in this series?

292.14ELMAGO::JVERGOThu Sep 19 1991 17:577

    $15 sounds fair, it would sell fast @ $10.

    Jim

    But if he gets the CY Young..... $20?

    I'm thinking 1) Cy Young and 2) I live 5 minutes from his home town....
