284.1Pre-order on UD FootballGSMART::MATOSTue Jul 16 1991 12:459
SMK in Hudson Ma is taken pre-orders on the UpperDeck
FootBall for $21.75 a box or $500 case, bad news is that 7/17 is
the last day to put in your orders, I just found out yesterday.
There number is 508-562-7898 ask for Rickey Henderson or Steve
    Sardella for more information.
I'm not into football I'm just passing the word around but, they will
be happy in hearing from you.

284.2Rumor ControlASDS::KELLYThu Jul 25 1991 16:4910
The rumor mill is saying that 700 dealers filed suit against
upper deck today in a class action opposing the lottery system.
Apparently this will slow down shipment by 4 months.

Also the NBA has let UD know that they ( the NBA ) will control
    distribution of UD Basketball.

    Any other information???
    The above are rumors.

	Roy,

I know your asking Mike Kelly, but let me give it a try. Mike let me
	know if I'm wrong..

Lottery System : Many baskets of order forms from dealer across the
country are sitting in Upper Deck's main office. Data Entry personnal
grab one envelope at a time and key's into your computer terminal the
dealers name, address and the amount of case's that dealer has ordered.
The Computer system keep track of the amount of case's Upper Deck has
produced and subtracts that dealers order from the total cases produced.
After a day of doing this Upper Deck's supplier has been depleted. Oooh
but, wait one minute there are still hundred's of envelope's still in
the baskets. What do we do?

Lottery, I think means randomly selected.

These cards should sky-rocket in price!
284.7SBGPX2::BELISLEMike Belisle MRO4-1/H20 297.3324Fri Jul 26 1991 11:423
Upper Deck guaranteed each dealer 2 cases. If the dealer wanted more
they could order as much as 22 cases more.
284.8Nixon a thief!!!!! Otis NixonASDS::KELLYMon Jul 29 1991 15:5912
Lottery .07 is right. Big Bob will magically get 500 Cases.

Other Notes: No they don't cut the amount ordered. They cut all that
    they can print.
Did anyone notice that SCD had an article about
skybox showing up in retail chains? I told you so!!!!
Southboro. All of the Stadium Club cards were
printed in Southboro. Packs, boxes, cases and uncut sheets
are usually available for short money because they are
toasty warm. Be careful. Is it a sting????

Please keep discussion of TSC in note 269.

Please keep this note relegated to the discussion of UD Football.

I try my best to move notes to their appropriate places, but a lot
of times discussions get into ratholes of RELATED topics.

I received a mail message from an upset reader who feels that the
UD FB denigrated like all the other notes. Unfortunately, I agree
with him, but I also disagree with him.

This whole notesfile is devoted to sports memorabilia. Granted,
98% of it is sports cards, but each topic does have it's own note,
or a new note for that topic can be started.

However, on the disagree side, if we're talking about something
that's up with UD FB cards, and something similar happened with
another brand, dealer, noter, card-show, whatever, and that
discussion gets picked up, I don't see a problem with it.

All I'm asking is that people please try and reply to the appropriate
note when discussing something. We even have a general piss and
moan note somewhere in the notesfile.

284.13Bad news for usFRAGLE::GUTIERREZWho's on 1st.. What's on 2nd..Fri Aug 09 1991 16:059

For all of those (myself included) who pre-ordered UD Football thru
SMK in Hudson, here is bad news. I just went over there today, and
he told me that they got their check back. He said that UD sold
out the first day. They selected orders at random and filled them
out, and when they were sold out, whoever was left out didn't get
any. That's what he told me, believe what you will. If you are
suspicious about this, so am I.
284.14CERBUS::KARLSONOnly 138 shopping days until Xmas!Fri Aug 09 1991 16:419

I'd write a letter to SCD. They took your money, cashed your checks,
whatever. They should be responsible for filling your order -- no
    matter what it takes.

Even if SCD does nothing, it will prevent them from advertising in
    SCD if enough people complain.

The guy in downtown Maynard also said they sent him back his check, un-
cashed, saying sorry, sold out on first day....

284.16You might try this logic...HANNAH::OBRIENFri Aug 09 1991 17:499
The guy is telling the truth; it's common knowledge that UD couldn't
	fill all of the orders.

However, if the guy took your money, he's obligated to divide the
two cases he got (everyone was guaranteed at least 2 cases), equally
among the people he took money from.

For those unaware, Upper Deck has produced a 50-card football set
    for Domino's.

The cards are given away as part of their "quarterback challenge"
    promotion.

Order two medium pizzas, and 4 cokes for $9.99, and receive a pack
    of the cards.

Cards come 4 per pack (foil pack), and are what you expect from UD
-- nice stock, nice look, hologram, etc.

The promotion began August 3rd (1 week ago), and is on for 3 weeks
    only.

I saw the packs at the show in Sturbridge yesterday. Prices ranged
from $1.50 to $5.00/pack. Singles were selling on the average of
$2 to $3 each. Complete sets available for $40-50.

Was at a show on Sunday and UD FB was there going for $2.25 a pack.
$69.00 a box. The dealer selling them was saying that the price is
high because these cards were shipped from the west coast and that UD
FB is sold out but hte price might come down when the rest of the
    people receive there orders.

Just got my box of UD football and they look pretty nice.
I got seven holograms 4 Bobby Humphrey and 3 Thurman Thomas.
The series special card consist of a autographed Joe Montana
but I was'nt lucky enough I guess, but I did get a couple Dan
    Mc Guire's and Russel Maryland's.
Thier is a Bo Jackson card included in this set, but those
holograms are a nice addition to the set. I also seen a Dan
Mc Guire at a shop fron the Domino's sets they are going
    for $10.00 bucks.

I went to a card show over the weekend at the Holiday Inn in
Dedham, and dealers were selling UD Football wax boxes for as
high as $50 and as low as $39. The dealer who was selling them
for $39 were 2 young guys, and they were selling a lot of them.
I asked him if he had a lot of them, and he said he had about
    	another case left.

There was a dealer who was selling the empty wax boxes. Yes, you
heard that right, empty wax boxes for $5 each!!!. Isn't that
incredible ???. I can't imagine anyone buying an empty box just to
get the picture of Joe Montana on the bottom. I know I wouldn't.

I was able to pick up 3 boxes of UD football at a show this past
weekend and Hurricane Bob gave me time to open and collate them.

I'm kind of disappointed at the distribution. It looks something
    like this:

                         BOX 1 BOX 2 BOX3

    Card #1 - 99 17% 12% 14%
         #100-199 18% 17% 15%
         #200-299 29% 38% 34%
         #300-399 18% 18% 19%
         #400-500 18% 15% 18%

Needless to say, I'm loaded with dups in the 200 range and have many
missing cards in the 1-99 range.

Has anyone else noted the distribution on boxes you've opened???

This is ok once and a while (when the double is somebody good :-),
but in every pack is ridiculous. I think I'll write a letter to UD.

I'm part way into the second box I got and getting no doubles within

       You're probably correct, that's why I put a (?).

I would suspect that they are probably pretty rare, as only you and I
have even seen one. We would DEFINITELY know for sure if any of the

Since I haven't bought any UD FB yet, I haven't been glomming them
too closely at shows (except to look for xlists for The Saint),
other than to see if prices have come down to a reasonable range.

They haven't yet, so I haven't any yet, ergo, this eagle eye is
    closed.

But I'd probably put that card in a safe-deposit box and consider

I checked and it is indeed Darrell Green on the SP1 card. I'm not

    RE: .44,.45

Mike, I think what he's trying to point out is how ridiculous
Beckett's listed price is for this set. If you took that Beckett's
price and went looking for the UD FB set -- you'd be sorely
disappointed -- most espececially in Massachusetees.

It's long been espoused by myself and others in here, that
Beckett's is pretty useless here in Mass., UNTIL the prices have
settled down. So ... since UD is fairly recent (3-4 weeks at
best), the price Beckett's prints is going to be unrealistic
for us. And will be for some time.

I now have two NEW things to add to this discussion:

    	- Did anyone see the recent ad by New York Card Company in
SCD? They had CASES of the UD/Domino's FB packs available. So
much for UD/Domino's efforts to prevent store managers selling
them out the back door, eh? It's either that or now that the
promotion is over, UD or Domino's is flooding the market.
Personally, I believe it was the managers since NYCC is the only
one I've seen with anything other than packs available.

    	- I am *completely* unimpressed with this year's set. I
mean the cards are very nice, typical UD quality, but I opened
one box. I'm missing nearly HALF the set (174 to be exact).
I got 7 stereograms -- all the same damned card!

I did do pretty well on the Football Heroes/Joe Montana subset.
Except some jerk scribbled on two of 'em -- talk about quality
    control problems ...

Here are some excerpts from an interesting article that appeared
	on the periodical "Restaurant News".

Title:	Domino's Pizza throws flag, calls back NFL Kick-Off Deal

Sub-title: Two managers fired, others investigated for 'illegal
			procedure' during football card promo.

	by Theresa Howard

ANN ARBOR, Mich.- Domino's Pizza recently found itself scrambling to
recover from some unexpected problems created by a football card
promotion that prompted the dismisal of two unit managers and the
	investigation of four others.

The cards -- each depicting one of 50 National Football
League quarterbacks -- were meant only to be issued to customers as
part of the Domino's Pizza NFL Kick-Off Deal. Patrons received four
cards with the purchase of 2 medium cheese pizzas and 4 soft drinks.

But a demand blitz from card collectors and dealers turned
the limited-edition giveaway into a valuable and hotly traded commodity
Days after kicking off the three-week promotion, Domino's
discovered that the cards were being traded among unit managers,
franchisees, card dealers and customers. One box that contained a
bulk order was reportedly sold for $5,000.

Some of the cards were selling for $6 to $12.50, and the
entire collection is valued at about $125. "Card dealers even
approached headquarters directly ", says Mike Jenkins, a Domino's
spokesman. "A gentleman from Canada saw them at a card show and
wanted to know how to buy them direct."

The cards were in such demand that the corporate headquarters
literally placed the giveaways under lock and key. "After 3 days
we took them out of the corporate units for security reasons",
Jenkins explained. "We also suggested the idea to the franchisees".

Every company unit originally was issued 2 boxes, each filled
with 1,250 packs of the 4 card sets. But security concerns prompted
Domino's to begin distributing only on a daily allotment to the stores,
	according to Jenkins.

Two unit managers from the New England area were fired for
selling the cards, and four others are under investigation by the
corporation for allegedly selling the cards to dealers.

The booming popularity stems from the cards' limited
availability and their distinction as the first football items from
Upper Deck, a well known marketer of baseball cards. The promotion
preceded Upper Deck's launch of its own NFL card line, which was one
of the reasons why Domino's teamed up with that particular card
supplier. Most trading cards are issued with the stamped approval
of the appropriate player's union, but the Domino's/Upper Deck cards
lack the insignia. That distinction increased the cards' desirability.

"Some of us had forecast that this would happen for those
reasons", Jenkins said. Those expectations had spurred Domino's to
take some measures to discourage pilferage. For instance, franchisees
were permitted to purchase a greater allotment of cards than needed
for the promotion, and employees could purchase a pack of the cards
	at cost.

"The whole idea was that franchisees could purchase them for
employees or friends so that there would be less of a chance of
pilferage," Jenkins pointed out. "But some franchisees were ordering
	4 or 5 additional boxes".

"Those instances are isolated, though, and most people are
doing what they're supposed to with the cards. Franchisees realized
that it was a short-term benefit to sell the cards. If the cards had
been unavailable at any point during the promotion, it would had ticked
people off". "The demand for the cards heightened awareness," Jenkins
	said. "Sales are up."

Seems like when this novelty stuff first comes out there is alot
of interest and the prices are inflated. After a month or so when
supply is abundant and everyone has already swallowed the hook,
boom... the price fall like a rock. Soon these holograms will be in
    the $1 - $1.50 range.
I for one am not jumping at the promo/hologram hype. The biggest
reason why certain cards command a high price is because of the
number of collectors interested in a given number of cards.
For instance, I think the Jordan card will bottom out at $10-$12
and go back up from there. Where as the Greene cards will end up
at $5 or less. Even these promo (Sanders and Montana) are dropping
right now, I've seen them for $25 and they are'nt moving.

Well, at the Joe D show in Andover 2 weeks back, the prices on
the UD/Domino's cards had dropped dramatically.

Sets were selling for $14 and $14.95 (the two dealers I spoke
with who had complete sets). Packs could be found for as low
as $1.25, or 5/$5. Very few cards, INCLUDING the McGwire
rookie were demanding much of a premium.

1/2 of the dealers in SCD have these things advertised, and I've
seen them as cheap as $20 in SCD.

UD or Domino's flooded the market. Keep an eye out, and you should
be able to pick these up for a decent price. And it's a nice set.

One of the reasons I heard that prices were dropping on this was that
UD was releasing a factory set. I've heard AND read both sides of this

hand-collating a set, the factory sets would have a major impact on the

One dealer said that as soon as you see "dumping" of wax boxes, it

FWIW, it was reported in SCD that indeed UD would release a factory
set for football after the football season was over. So if true it
won't be coming out for awhile. I think there are other factors at
work affecting the price of the wax, a pending factory set just
being one of several factors (quantity, poor collation, general
depressed football card market in this area, etc.)

btw, the high number wax does indeed have GB6, 7, & 8 holos (as did
some of the last low number wax). I did get a gb6 in one of the two
packs I bought, so that kind of made it worth it, however only getting
3 (or 2!) high number cards per pack, sux.

284.114some high # boxes better than othersDDIF::TANCILLlong may you runTue Jan 14 1992 03:3310

I hit upon a box at a local shop today in which the packs had
between 6 and 8 high numbers per pack. This seemed to be pretty
consistent throughout the box, another box from the same case
was running 2 high numbers per pack. So the lesson learned is sample
a pack and see how many high numbers you get, if you hit 6 or more
    buy from that same box.

Well, this high number series is pissing me off! I bought a
pack yesterday hoping to get a less 6 high numbers, guess what,
I only found 2... I was PISSED! HOW THE HELL CAN UD RELEASE A
SECOND SERIES AND ONLY PUT TWO GOD DAMN HIGH NUMBERS IN A PACK!!

This FU@&in' company is getting a big thumbs down from me. It
would take (giving the UD distribution) about 5 boxes to put
together a 150 cards high number set. And the boxes are selling
anywhere from $40/box. GIVE ME A BREAK! I already have series I
cards, AND I DON'T WHAT ANYMORE!

I heard the sets are coming out in a couple weeks. It seems thats
the only way to go. No wonder the high number sets are so expense
	to buy.

Sorry, but at least now I fell better..8^)
284.117and yet we keep buying the stuff...DDIF::TANCILLlong may you runThu Jan 16 1992 13:2717

I'll have to say again that I have found yet another high number
box which seemed to be running 6-7 high numbers per pack, yet I
also got one pack of just 2 from the same box, so it varies quite
a bit, but it's not all only 2 high per pack. Clearly the best
way is to buy the high set, should be able to pick these up for
around $20, mabe less if you wait awhile and let football season
    fade away.

Despite being a bit luckier than Mike, I agree that UD is freakin'
out of control with their distibution, mixed high/low high wax, insert
cards, holograms and different ways of packaging the same stuff
(low & hi wax, jumbos, factory sets, high # sets, 'locker series',
     please give us a break!).

Picked up two Hi # sets yesterday for $10ea. Now all I
have to do is find the Namath and Holograms... Anyone
buying boxes and have extra of these, please send me
mail, I'll be interested in anything you have.

This might sound like a pat answer Hal, but it's worth whatever
    someone will pay for it.

I've seen it priced (not selling, priced) at shows for between
    $700 and $950.

Most of these autographed cards end up dropping below $500, and
anywhere from $150-350 seems to be the "norm".

If your friend BOUGHT it for $165.00 -- he probably got a good deal.
If he sold it for $165.00 -- hard to tell. He probably could've
gotten more from a private sale, than to a dealer, but if it
drops like the others have ... ???
