221.0. "HSC Network" by AKOCOA::GASPARONI () Fri Dec 07 1990 18:18

    Home Shopping Club News
I thought we needed a new note on what is happening on the HSC Cable
Network. Some of you may have this channel on your local cable
station, I happen to have it and enjoy listening to the sports
Celebrities they have on from time to time. They continue to have the
big names on the station which makes me believe that they are selling
the stuff off pretty good, and the station has a good following, since
the MC, Brian Colliar knows and talks to some of the guys like there
his old pals. Last nite, "Sweetness", Mr. Walter Payton was the guest,
and if you call up and buy something, like his Record Breaker Placque,
or his Repi Jersey, signed by Walter, you get a chance to talk with
him. I think for collectors who can't get to shows, or celebrities
who don't do shows, this is a viable alternative, plus, you get to
chat with the celebrity. The guest is usually very relaxed, doesn't
have 800 screaming collectors pushing to get autographs, and talks
about old times, and some of the old war stories. Has anyone else
watched this on TV, and how do you feel about the prices and the
    quality of the merchandise?

Isn't the stuff on there overpriced? I just keep seeing 150 Upper
Deck Cards on sale for something like $20 and there's no guarantee
    who's in there....

In the Sunday supplement magazine Parade, there was a 1/2 page ad for
the 1991 Topps. Yes, now YOU can receive 200 of these beautiful 40th
anniversary cards for ONLY $9.95 and $2 p&h. Of course they don't tell
you that you could buy 2 jumbo supermarket racks for about $4 and get
the same number of cards plus a chance at some stars or key rookies.
Unbelievable, but they'll probably sell tens of thousands of these
    lots.
221.4...be the first on your block to get 'emSKETCH::MACFARLANEMon Dec 10 1990 13:544

Also, did you notice in the Sunday Parade that those cards would not
be sent until MArch or April?.......suposedly before anyone else could
    get them!
221.6Put up the graphics on those prices.AKOCOA::GASPARONIMon Dec 10 1990 15:189
John, if you do, will you let us all know ahead of time, so I can
listen to it. I want to here what the guy says to you. Some of the
stuff is cheaper than some of these mail-order houses that sell sets.
There graphics are way out in left field. They make me feel good when
I see something on there like the MM ball for $125. I paid $35 plus
the cost of the ball. Somebodies making money on them balls. I like
listening to Reggie Jackson hype up the UpperDeck cards. What they
forget to tell you is, UD is paying him too.

221.9What did they say?AKOCOA::GASPARONIFri Dec 14 1990 17:532
Did anyone watch the ESPN show that John was talking about, and how was
    it??
221.10I saw it.....EUCLID::MACFARLANEFri Dec 14 1990 18:2840
Yes, I watched most of it last night....pretty good show....and scary
for those into collecting autographs. Some of my observations:

    - I had heard Bob Ley say that this subject was tought to squeeze into
only a one hour show. Well I can see why when they have commercials
every 7 minutes. Also, I think I got George Brett's point the first
time he said that he would not sign for someone with a box of cards
outside the stadium. It seemed like they showed that six times.

    - Good comments from Gretzky (he only knew of 2 game jerseys that he
did not still own himself), Jordon (I don't think I'll starve if I
don't charge for my autographs),BO (hates people bugging him while
with his family - can't blame him)and Chuck Barkley. They gave a
good perspective on the athlete's point of view.

    - Did you see Dave Justice signing at that show....he almost looked
embarrassed to be charging after handing a little kid back his
      'graph. Charging $8!!!

    - Good piece on the home shopping networks and the Sportsnet (wish I
      had that idea!!)

    - Pieces on Joe D's sister signing for him, clubhouse people signing
for ballplayers, and now computerized signing machines that can
exactly duplicate a person's autograph (I believe they said Dale
      Murphy uses this thing)

    - The autograph expert saying that 40% of the sports stuff he sees
come across his desk if a forgery.

    - And lastly, WHY do most dealers actually look, talk and act like
deadbeats, losers, scumbags and cheats? Almost every dealer they
interviewed would be the last person I would deal with.

    - Oh yea, did you see the autograph collection that one guy had at
the end of the show. It showed him getting Bird, Parrish and McHales
autographs in a hotel lobby. He would also qualify as an excellent
      dealer.....appearance-wise!

John, your absolutely right about being a RIP-OFF. I ordered that
1990 Claccic set with the #1 Draft Picks, and it cost me something
like $39.00 for the set. They also included a Griffey poster of
father and son. The draft picks were supposed to be available only
through HSC,this is what they said. They sold this set by pushing the
" Nolan Knowes Bo card ",plus they had some guy on the phone telling
everyone to get in on the deal because of the draft picks.Well I
should of known better, but I still ordered 3 of them, and when I saw
what they were I sent them Back. There policy is return them within
30 days. if you go to a dealer,or one of the larger stores like
Bradlees, and Ames, you can get the Classic cards for $10.95,and the
draft picks for less than $10.00. Buy the way,I got stuck for the
shipping & handling $2.95 per set,and as far as I'm concerned they
    are a big rip off.

John, your the last person in the world that they want to talk to.
As sonn as you start telling about your gripe, they'll say,(Hello
Hello) well we lost him,can we have another caller, ;-) ;-).
By the way B.J.'s in Salem N.H. has the Upper/decks for $39.95,
and 1 thru 800,now thats a great deal! I love your style John,
keep it up I enjoy reading your comments & replys....

Yeah, and did you see how he kissed their A _ _'s for their autograph.
All 3 of them Bird,Parrish, & McHale, not one time cracked a smile for
the guy, they looked like walking Zombies. But the best part was at the
end when it showed Charles Barcley signing autographs, and kidding
around with the kids,he even put his arm around them.To those
kids,I think that had to be the highlight of their day, maybe the year ?

Thanks for the synopsis of the show. Verrrry Interesting! John,
could you expand on your .14 comment on none of these collectibles will
be worth anything down the road?? I'm not sure what that means. If
it means what I think, alot of "investors" will be selling out soon.

221.20The Great Ones Jersey.AKOCOA::GASPARONIMon Jan 14 1991 17:429
Did anyone see the Gretzky Jersey, Kings, signed and retailed for
$1000. Selling in SCD for $1100, but the article said all sold out.
Ya! Sold out my A_s. Of course, HSN was selling them for $499, a
great price since the Great one doesn't do card shows, right Barry?
Right Brian. And since our good buddy is sold out in SCD. I wonder
what idiot paid $1100 for a Jersey, signed by the Great One? Probably
nobody, it was just a phoney Ad possibly? I wouldnt put it past them
to pull one of those fast ones, so they can show the graphic on TV, as
    they call it.

$598.75 for 300 win club balll

$39.75 for Barry Bonds "error" ball. Some dealer had Barry sign a
bunch of balls dated 11/20/91, when Bonds won the NL MVP for the
second year in a row. Funny thing, Pendleton won. Hence, the "error".

Don't know if any of you caught their weekly baseball card show
on Saturday night this week, but believe it or not, they had some
"okay" prices on this week's show!

    - They had the '76 SPCC (I think) entire set w/Ryan error for $67
(I don't think you can find a better price, if you can find the
      set!)

    - They had the '92 UD "All-Star Heroes" set for $14.75 (more on this
in the "what I found" note). This is a 50-card set that UD did
for the All-Star FanFest this year. According to the hype "Brian"
was giving us on this, there are only three places to get these
cards; All-Star Fan-Fest, HSC, and on the secondary market (ha!).

    - A bunch of different uncut sheets from different years for decent
      prices.

I believe they're running the show again tonight in honor of the A-S
game, so you might want to tune 'em in. They're always worth a
laugh, and surprise surprise, they actually had some decent prices
for the first time I've ever seen!

Anybody watch HSC on Saturday night?? (I think this was the HSC 2
channel, not the primary channel) They had their Sports Collectors
show on (with the somewhat obnoxious host Brian "folks, you can't
    beat this deal!" :-) ).

Well they occasionally have those 5x7 cards offered by Upper Deck on.
Upper Deck has a variety of cards that they've chosen from their
recent sports sets and blow them up to 5x7 cards, limit it to "X"
amount and place each card in screw down lament holders. You
can find several of them offered through their UD Authenticated
mail order house (can't beat the postage and handling, huh John??!!).

Anyways, they had offered the 5x7 version of Shaq's UD Rookie Sensation
card (regular sized card is an insert in UD series II retail boxes).
This was limited to 2500 cards.

They started it out at $199, so I was wondering how many fools would
call in at that price. Well the price started dropping, and
    dropping... Their final price... $39.95

I thought that was a decent price considering the regular insert
    card books for $60.

Yeah, that's not too bad... they had a Griffey 5 yr. anniversary card
for the same price. That's they price I saw them listed for in the
    UD catalog, FWIW...
