    	I found a store that had the new skybox basketball cards,
    look real nice, but it looks like they are going to be expensive
    to purchase, the store had them at $ 2.50 a pack.

202.2I like'em!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZTue Oct 23 1990 15:0313

     In Mass., at the Strubridge show, The cards were going for $3.00 a
    pack. I don't want to mention how much I paid for a box. I don't
    think that John or Roy have stopped chuckling at me yet. I just
    had to have them you know.
     These are with out a doubt one of the nicest looking cards that I
    have ever seen and all the cards are high quality except for one thing.
    They seem to have a little trouble (big time) keeping the cards cut to
    the same size. Stand them on end and you will see what I mean. Other
    than that, I didn't see a card I wouldn't have called gem mint. This
    is one super nice looking card. How they could get the edges to look
    so nice is a mystery to me. I rate them a 10.
     I haven't had time to open the box, so I can't say much about the mix.
202.3$49.95 a setyWRKSYS::SCHWARTZTue Oct 23 1990 15:134

     FWIW I saw an add on page 128 of the Oct 26 edition of SCD for sets
    at $49.95 from J.L. sportscards. I haven't finished looking at it so
    I can't tell you if they are in there cheaper.
202.4OOOPS!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZTue Oct 23 1990 15:141
     Make that $49.95 a set. Sorry about the typo's.

      I opened the box last night. I haven't finished sorting, but I would
    say there is one complete set there. There are 300 cards in the set
    and each card is pure "class". I have all of the first one hundred
    cards and would say that if this continues, you would get three sets
    from two boxes. Some of the card backs have the players doing their
    favorite leisure time sport such as golfing or fishing. They don't
    load up the box with stars though. You will use up most of the stars to
    build a set and will be left with mostly commons to start a second.
     Btw not one bad card in the box yet! Did you hear that Topps, Donruss
    Fleer, Proset and Score? This is unheard of and I haven't seen any of
    those so called error cards yet either! Could this be the begining of
    something? First a fine set from Leaf (Donruss) then this.

      Oh well I am rambeling on. Just can't say enough about these cards.
    Tony the Tiger would have said "THEY'RE GRREAT!!".
202.7One box, one set!!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZThu Oct 25 1990 10:517

      I finished sorting last night and did complete one set and have
    (mostly commons) between 1/2 to 3/4 of another complete set. I was
    very pleased with the mix. some triples but not an over abundance.
      If they stick to basketball and don't overproduce they really
    have something going for themselves. I must admit though, I would
    like to see what they could do in a baseball set............

    Is that Olden Polynice's picture on the back of Nate McMillen's (SP?)

     Just missed getting Skybox from B.J.'s last night. They set the limit
    at 20 boxes at $29.00 each. Dealers must have been killing themselves
    with their selfishness running to their cars with 20 boxes and back
    into the store to buy more. Tough life those guys have. I have thought
    about complaining to B.J.'s but that would not do anything but waste
    my breath. If they put them out at days end we would stand a chance
    of getting some. Maybe you guys will have better luck up in
    Cowhampshire. Other than cards, I find no use for B.J.s I can find
    my other stuff cheaper at Spags.
202.11EBBV03::MONDALTOMon Nov 12 1990 13:1012
    I'm from Salem (Cowhampshire) New Hampshire,and when the cards do come
    in,their gone before the word gets out that they have them.And your
    right,don't waste your breath telling Management about the dealers,and
    how fast they SCOOP them up. I was there the other night and saw a
    young kid looking for Proset hockey cards that had just arrived,and
    guess what,they were all gone. The poor kid couldn't believe it,I told
    him that it happens all the time,a dealer comes in with 6 or 7 guys and
    they all buy the limit,(10) PER CUSTOMER. I saw this happen with my own
    eyes.So now instead of the kid paying $11.98 per box he'll have to save
    a little more money like $5.00 or $6.00 then put his allowance
    togeather and go to adealer and pay minimum $17.00.

    that some places charge a $1.75 and up per pack. Goes to show ya that

202.13down on skyboxEVETPU::MCEVOYMon Nov 12 1990 13:2415
    I picked up a couple packs this weekend ($1.50 per pack).

    For what it's worth, I don't think much of these cards.

    On the front of a card, I'd much rather see a real live action photo
    than a picture of a player forming out of a brightly colored rainbow.

    On the back of a card, the color is nice, but I'd rather see more
    stats than an "up close and personal" photo of a player. The Joe
    Dumars picture looks like he's in a modelling studio (give me a break!)

    The cards are different than the norm, which is refreshing, but there has
    to be a better way.

202.18Every now and then I find a dealWRKSYS::SCHWARTZMon Nov 19 1990 13:177

      There are deals to be found. I bought Skybox this weekend for
    $.50 a pack($18.00 a box) at Bradley's (sp?) department store in Westboro
    Mass. Kinda makes up for my foolishness earlier. (insert sheepish grin
    here). I sent a friend over on Sunday and they were sold out. I wonder
    why? Their store in Shrewsbury (near Spag's) had them for $.99 a pack
    on sunday.
202.19Error in pricingEBBV03::MONDALTOMon Nov 19 1990 15:005
    Because somebody screwed up marking them.I would of bought them
    all,and just put them away for the kids. The cheapest I saw them for
    was $.99 per pack,and this weekend I saw them in a few stores ranging
    from $1.45 to as hi as $2.00 per pack,I hope that person still has a
    job,$.50 per pack,unbelieveable........... John

      Actually I did say something. I asked the girl (head cashier) if she
    was sure that this was the correct price. the girl at the
    counter couldn't get the skew no. to ring in correctly, so she had to
    call her over. I gave them their chance, but didn't come out and say
    " you had better check with stock and make sure. I think you are making
    a mistake". :>) I just wonder how many other folks are getting to tell
    this story today. I hope they aren't all dealers. Saturday was just
    one of those good days you get every once in a while. My kid was
    thrilled to pieces, which really made my day..

202.24$.75 my guessWRKSYS::SCHWARTZMon Nov 19 1990 18:525

     B.J.'s had them for $29.95 a few weeks ago and they are Wholesalers
    who hype a little, but usually only about $4 or $5 a box. Take it from
    there. Possibly $25 a box = $.70 a pack. I'm guessing that they were
    probably meant for the $.75 range, but then that's only a guess.

     Sorry. Westboro mass. Don't bother, they're long gone.

     I was talking to the owner of the Great American Baseball Card shop
    in Concord and he told me Skybox was priced to sell for $1.00 a pack.
    hope that answers an earlier reply. He also told me that they are now
    going to do a second series and are debating on making ...........
    TA DAA...Factory sets!!! If that doesn't P_ss you off...nothing will.
    They have already done a large second printing to keep up with demand.
     Are these people the same as Upper Deck or what?? Can someone else
    verify this?? For those that are new to Skybox, they were only going
    to do one limited test run to see how they sold and now the SKY is
    the limit.

A friend of mine just bought a box of Skybox and had 17 David Robinsons (12
in one pack), 13 Pooh Richardson's and 11 of some other player. Look's like
the packaging might have got screwed up a bit. Anybody else here of this
kind of thing happening? Maybe this only happens to boxes sent to Canada. :-)

    Someone mentioned Olden Polynice on the back of some other card too...
202.32Another mess to fix!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZWed Dec 12 1990 11:0412

     I can confirm the Wiggins and Thorpe variations. I have both but can't
    determine which is correct. The cards have both front and backs
    swapped and I can't tell which is which since I don't know their
    uniform numbers. Can someone help? I did 4 sets off this thanks to
    Bradley's department store deal of .50 cents a pack. I noticed last
    night that I have one set that has 2 Wiggins and one that has 2
    Thorpe's in it. I am only looking at numbers when collating, so it
    slipped right by me. No wonder card prices are falling! Damn errors!!
    I can't count the number of messes I have had to straighten out this
    year. My son is thriving though. I give all the errors to him since he
    gets a charge out of them. He has a three ring binder full off them.

    	This is my first note here and my first attempt at collecting.
    I am an avid hoops fan (I referee away from work) and I wanted to
    collect this set for myself and my son. I first saw the set when I
    was fortunate enough to attend their unveiling at the Hall of Fame
    banquet here in Springfield Mass. At the luncheon, they had a pack of
    Skybox and Hoops cards for everyone at the luncheon. I was impressed
    with the card and since it is a first run, thought that it would be
    nice to put the set together.

    	Well, the cards are very hard to find and run anywhere from a buck
    to 2 bucks a pack. But since I live in the city that houses the Hall
    of Fame, I went down there and sure enough they had the cards and were
    only charging 1.00 per pack. I hesitated on buying a whole box but
    have instead just bought a bunch of random packs. As most of you
    veterans know, that has left me short by about 30 cards. I do have
    about 200-300 doubles that I'd be glad to trade if I could get the
    other 30 or so I need. I'm really trying to keep from buying a whole
    box, so I thought I'd ask in here first.

    	If anyone is willing to set something up, you can write me here or
    send me mail at: ARMORY::GUSICJ

    							bill

    BTW, the second or updated version of the set is due out in about 2
    weeks so I am told by the local collector shop.

    Also, at the luncheon, Bill Lambier from the Pistons sat at our table,
    but alas, no one had a Lambier card in their packs for him to sign..

    	Thanks to some noters in here, I have been able to complete my set
    of SKYBOX cards, but I do have a couple more questions.

    	Can someone detail the error cards in this set for me. I've
    re-read all the replys here and can only find one error, although
    through several other sources, I have been told that there are 3-4
    cards that are in error. I would appreciate any help in finding out
    which cards are in error, and just what is the error on those cards.

202.38I love those Skybox!!!GLDOA::OLIVERMon Feb 04 1991 20:2720
    In ref. to 202.36, Beckett Basketball Monthly is a very good source of
    info on the error card situation. The January issue addresses the
    Mitchell Wiggins, Otis Thorpe situation. In ref to 202.28, WHAT A
    GOLDMINE!!!!, (17 David Robinson's in one box). The February issue
    lists this card at $8.00 apiece!! I paid $30.00 for my box at a card
    show, and I was short 4 cards of a complete set. I like the graphic
    designs on the cards, but I agree that the stats leave a lot to be
    desired. The Feb. Beckett's has an article by Don Loving, that gives
    his opinions on the layout, stats, etc. We currently have 3 guys in
    our office collecting Skybox at the moment (one guy paid $43.00 for
    a box!), and we all love them.

    In reference to SKYBOX II, What are you guys paying for a pack out
    there? The dealers in my area (Metro Detroit), just got them on the
    23rd of Feb., and they want $2.00 per pack!! I asked one guy how
    much a box would be, and he said $60.00!! That's LUDICROUS!!!!
    I did buy one pack though, and got a Derrick Coleman, a Rumeal
    Robinson, and a Michael Jordan, which I thought was pretty lucky.
    The Coleman's are going for anywhere from $7.00 to $15.00 around
    here. I think I'll wait until the prices come down before I buy

     FWIW BJ's in Westboro has Skybox II for $22.98 a box. They had about
    4 cases out when I was there, so if you want some you had better get
    there ASAP. That works out to about $.64 a pack. I got 2 Robinson's
    2 Tim Hardaway's, 4 Jordan's, 3 Coleman's, and 2 Kemp's not to mention
    a bunch of others. I got about a set and a half of series II and about

    	Thanks for the info about BJ's . I stopped in last night and
    bought a box ($22.98) and got pretty much the same distribution of
    cards that you did . They still had about 3 1/2 cases left . I almost
    missed them though . I hadn't been in BJ's for a few months and at that
    time the card selection was scant and mixed in with the candy . After
    15 minutes of scrounging thru things I gave up and headed out . It was
    then that I walked right into the small card section in the front of
    the store . I don't know how I missed them on the way in . They had
    several cases of almost all the Series II basketball,baseball,hockey and
    football cards .

    How much are the Derrick Coleman cards going for in the other areas?
    When they first came out, the price was around $10 in the Detroit area,
    but I imagine that will go up, now that he made ROY. I've got 8 of
    them, and would consider getting rid of a few, if I could get a
    decent price. I'm still missing a few of the other lottery picks
