185.0. "1990-91 Fleer Basketball" by EVETPU::MCEVOY () Fri Sep 21 1990 17:37

    I picked up a couple packs of 90-91 fleer basketball cards last
    weekend. The cards are real nice, but I had to pay $1.50 per pack.
    The dealer told me that he had to have the packs shipped from
    california because they weren't available around here (MA) yet,
    and that's why the steep price.

    has anyone seen these cards at a reasonable price anywhere local
    here in New England?

    thanks -dennis

    Assuming the suggested retail pack price is 50 cents, the dealer was
    presumably paying $36 per box shipping fees. Heck with sports cards,
    I'm going into the shipping biz.

    	I brought a wax box for $45 last week at a flee market in
    Millbury plus 5 extra packs at $1.50 but, I havn't been able to find
    them at the stores yet. One Dealer told me that in New Jersey the
    wholesale price for dealers was $33 a wax box and he told me that
    every box dosn't have the Robinson card in it. I got 3 of them in the
    wax box, they are going for $ 8 - $ 12 for his card. I was able to make
    two complete sets and am about 15 short of the 3rd set. The allStars
    and rookie sensation card are going to be hard to find because, I only
    got 6 out of 12 and the rookie senation I got none.

     I did it the easy way and bought a set for $20.00. Cheapest I could
    find boxes at a show was $35.00. The most expensive was $50.00 a box.
    Talk about ripoff prices...From the looks of the cards, they should
    be paying me to take them off their hands.
     These cards aren't any different from any other card Fleer produces
    so I can't see why dealers would have to pay Fleer $33.00 a box for
    them. Another example of dealers trying to "hype" up the price?

    	I saw the 90/91 Fleer BasketBall in downtown Maynard in the
    jewelry store next to the deli shop. He wanted $ 1.75 a pack
    and $ 50 for the wax bow. He also has Leaf Series I & II but,
    he wants $ 2.50 a pack, a bit expensive.

    Well, I tried Cumberland Farms in Maynard, Hudson and Marlboro,
    the Lake Charles variety store, White Hen's in Marlboro, Christys
    in Woburn (2), Store 24 in Maynard, 7-11 in Woburn and one deli
    in Lexington. No Hoops cards. I went to try and find out which
    store was mentioned in here, but .4 has disappeared. Oh well...
    So much for trying to get help...

    K-Mart had a sell yesterday on 1990-91 Fleer Basketball cards, .57c
    a pack. Well, I was there at high noon, about 10th in line. The first
    nine people in line headed straight for the cards, actually running!
    Well, when I got there, all the basketball cards where gone, along
    with all the score baseball fac sets($21.99). 8^( I've read
    about things like this in this note, but, actually experiencing it
    was scary.

    They'll come around again, and this time I'll run faster.... 8^))

    I was up in Salem, NH last week. The K-Mart was out of the basketball
    cards, but the dealer down the road (Rte 28) was selling the Fleer
    basketball cards at .50 a pack.

    This older fella walked in while I was there and asked if anyone had
    seen the Pro-set Lombardi Trophy card. He said he got it in a pack that
    morning. He then showed it to all who was interested...which was every-
    one in the store. Beautiful looking card, his was number 79.

    Why is it always the other guy???

    I saw that older gentleman at the show in Methuen Sunday. He told me
    that he bought it off of a guy for $700. He then told me that someone
    told him that a card under #100 was worth up to $10,000....Right...He
    also pulled out a Reggie Jackson UD card autographed!!! This guy is
    a real character, quite funny... Someone came up to me a little later
    and said that he sold #79 Lombardi card to a guy who owns a variety
    store, and that 12 people have hit megabucks from his store...(owner
    of the store gets $15k whenever someone hits it big)...This guy is
    really lucky....

185.21Last night at BJ'sWRKSYS::SCHWARTZFri Nov 02 1990 13:5013

      Went to BJ's in Westboro Mass. last night looking for something new
    or cheap and this is what I saw;

                      FLEER BASKETBALL
                       LIMIT 20 BOXES
                          $16.98
      None left of course. As usual the dealers and people who don't have
    to work (or choose not to) had put their greed to work again. I would
    just love it, if next week BJ's had about 2000 cases there and was
    selling each box for $10. I'd [8>)) smile for a week! Maybe if some
    of you guys get to one of the other BJ's today you might find some
    there. &*(%$#@!%$#@%^&*%$#@%^$$^%$%^^#! DEALERS & A__HOLES!!!

     For you folks who work in the Marlboro area...I went to Rich's last
    night and they had a lot of Fleer Basketball for $.50 a pack. If you
    are going over give them a call first. They were selling a lot of it
    but had tons at 8:00pm. The way it was selling...it could go fast.

    (Roy) if you don't make it, I probably have enough doubles to complete
    your set now. Send mail for a good time to get together or your address
    so I can mail.

    Anyone know what the Rookie Sensation set is going for? I got
    a Robinson for $3 (I got lucky) in Albany this weekend and bought
    a set for $21.  I know they're charging $3.50 or so for a $1.49
    pack of cellos. Anyone seen any sets in this area?
185.25Rookie sensationPHAROS::SYSTEMMon Nov 26 1990 17:495
    There was one note last month but, it's not there anymore who
    had them at $ 19.95 a set.

    Yeah, I tracked down the author, but that was the only place I had
    seen it mentioned (not at any of the shows around here....)
    I think the set has Robinson, Rice, Kemp, Reid, Douglas,N. Anderson,
    Hardaway, Divac, Ellison and King, but I'm not sure...
185.27$15.00 for Fleer setLEDS::HEPPThu Dec 27 1990 20:0313
    I'm not a collector myself - so my info may or may not be accurate -
    but thought I'd put this in here in case its useful.

    My brothers are into collecting cards and for Christmas I decided to
    get my brother the Fleer 1990 set. I ended up buying it at a store
    in Whitensville, Mass. called "Sport's Collectors Paradise" (Neat store)
    for $15.00.

    The guy there told me Robinson's rookie card is worth $5.00. I also
    bought Robinson's rookie card from the Skybox set for $11.00. Was that
    about right?

185.29fleer updateEVETPU::MCEVOYThu Mar 14 1991 16:2210
    I just talked to a dealer who told me that there is a Dee Brown card in
    the fleer update set. Evidently the update set is out in some places
    and should be out everywhere in the next couple weeks.

    The Fleer update will also feature rookies actually pictured playing in
    their uniforms. Personally, I look forward to these cards much more
    than the Hoops and Skybox rookie cards which picture the players in
    suits (so they look like wall street journal cards...)

     Give Rotmann's in Worchester a call. They usually get most of the new
    stuff rather early.Sorry I don't have the number. maybe someone else
    can provide it.
